Best Jig Rod Available 2025

OK, I am in the market for a new jig rod. I like the one I have, but this is the third rod I have broken from this manufacturer. I think it's time to look around a little bit...

Price is not really a consideration. Usually I am a bit frugal when it comes to rods (especially moving baits) but I know that the jig rod is not the place to skimp. I'd bewilling to spend up to about $350. I am not attached to a particular brand (anymore!)

Any suggestions?

I have a cheap one for you, Deep South. I have a XXXH Flipping Stick, and simply cannot break it. It can't be more than $150 new.

i would highly recommend Cashion Rods. I was a marshall for the Elite Series and two of the guys i fished with used them, one being a jig fishing afficianado. I bought the 7' MH for my jigs and I love it, very sensitive. Matt Cashion is great to deal with and will personally help you determine the best rod for you.

JF, I'll check out the Deep South. Is it sensitive? That is my #1 criteria. From my OP, it may seem that I am harsh on rods, but I don't think I am. I have ~30 rods and have not had these breakage issues on any of the other brands. The three rods I've broke have all been different failure modes and (IMO) are workmanship issues..

CF, thanks for the suggestion. I haven't heard of Cashion, but I am open to new brands.

I just got a Dobyns DX744 and I can tell you that it is worth the investment; unbelievably sensitive, lightweight, but powerful, and the perfect lenght IMO.

Also you cannot beat Dobyns customer service. I received the rod with a 4 in. gash in the blank and they replaced it at no charge, and they even paid for ship back.

This past year I purchased one of the new Abu Garcia Veritas rods. Its a 7'6" MH, but I think its really under-rated, feels much more like a Heavy. I absolutely love this rod for flippin & pitchin jigs & weighted creature baits. Its extremely light, well balanced & super sensitive. One of my favorite features is the exposed reel seat. Abu Garcia uses aluminum instead of plastic for the piece that you screw down onto the reel. I like this feature for jig fishing because i can really put some muscle behind my hook sets & not worry about the reel seat cracking. Most of my rods are 7' but with this one the extra 6" really comes in handy for close quarters fishing in heavy cover. I have read some reviews about these rods breaking when they first came out, but Ive fished mine a full season and haven't had any issues. Plus it was $99.99. In my humble opinion you cant beat this rod.

Lots of great options from a lot of companies. It really depends on what type of jigs you use the most and what kind of cover you'll be dealing with. Since you're in Florida, I assume you'll be throwing 3/8+ oz. jigs in some pretty nasty stuff, and that you have a flipping stick for the really heavy weeds and such. I actually found my jig rod this year, a Dobyns DX745 with the full handle. It feels like it was custom built just for me, and the sensitivity is out of this world. There are a couple of other rods worth taking a look at as well:

DX745 - All-around perfect jig rod, really shines in the 3/8-3/4 oz. range. This rod can pitch a jig in a brushpile and drag a 3/4 oz. football in deep water equally well. Super versitile as well. I've thrown frogs, swimjigs, big spinnerbaits, plastics, chatterbaits, and small swimbaits on it as well. There's a lot more I could say about this rod, but I'm trying not to sound like a Dobyns tool. I will never buy another jig rod for as long as I live, and am thinking about getting another one.

DX784 - Not as powerfull as the DX745, but a faster and more powerfull rod than the DX744. Really a great 3/8-1/2 oz. jig rod, but you can throw up to a 1 oz. jig as well without concern. This, to me, is the most sensitive rod in the Champion Extreme lineup. Extremely versitile as well, and a superb plastics rod.

DX744 - Basically, a less-powerfull DX745. Perfect 3/8 oz. jig rod, but a 1/2 oz. is at the rods upper limit in terms of comfort level.

I would look hard at the DX745, for sure.

I usually stick with 3/8 or 1/2 oz jigs (light cover) and picked up a DX743 and NRX 893 after doing a lot of research. Didn't throw a lot of jigs this fall, but when I did both of these guys were incredibly sensitive.

i agree with christian, i have the same rod and its pretty awesome. i know for some reason iROD gets a bad rap but honestly theyre great rods. tough sensitive, and light. the irg704c is an amazing jig rod. also cashion rods are insanely sensitive, strong, and light as well and are 100% carbon fiber and at 179.99 you cant beat it. id go with either or both. you really dont need to spend 350 bux to get a quality rod. ive seen more friends break theyre 350 dollar rods than i can count and ive never ever broke my irods or cashions and im pretty hard on my gear.

I don't have the NRX 854C, but that's what I want! You won't find that for $350,

but you might find a GLX MBR844C or BCR854 for that price or even less. I have

both rods and HIGHLY recommend them.

I had no confidence in my jig fishing until I started fishing them with my Daiwa Zillion rods. I started with the 6'9" MH x-fast, but added a 7' MH fast last spring -- holy crud, I love this thing. I'd HIGHLY recommend giving these a look.

I also have a few Dobyns, including the 704C and DX the744. To me, the Daiwa is a stiffer, faster rod, but this is what I prefer for jigs. If you prefer a bit softer action, the Dobyns may be a better bet.

I use a Dobyns DX795 FLIP. I love it. Very sensitive, great backbone, action is perfect for me when I flip. I also love the fact that it's 7' 9" long. Just under $350.

I'm very intrigued by this Mike Long Jig Rod (DX784). I found this looking at the 745C online. I'm really liking the specs on this rod. Anyone use this rod?

Yep, it's a little bit less-powerfull than the DX745, but has a slightly faster taper. The DX745 has what seems like a pretty quick tip, but when you're fighting a fish, it loads up a good portion of the rod with a more moderate taper than the DX784.

What type of jigs are you planning on fishing? How are you going to fish them? I searched for the perfect DX jig rod for a couple months and know the 745 and 784 pretty well.

I have a ton of jigs, but there's two that I use the most. In the slop, I like to use a fairly heavy grass jig like the Hack Attack (1/2oz, 3/4oz). On hard bottom, I use primarily an AT Rattlin jig in 3/8, 1/2 or 5/8oz. I have a few 1/4 jigs, but they don't get used much.

I'm interested in your thoughts regarding the 745 and the 784...seems like you've put some effort into this.

If you're looking for a rod to fish primarily grass jigs, the DX784 is one of the very best you're going to find. It's got a MEAN butt section with more lifting power than almost any rod I've ever fished. It's got great feel in soft cover. The reason I don't fish the DX is because I fish the NRX854. It's much, much faster and is just more sensitive in the long run. It's also more powerful but in a slightly different way. The Dobyns will pull a fish out of cover, but with the NRX, the fish just doesn't get the chance. On the hookset there's NO recovery, that head is turned and moving before they have a chance to think about it. The GLX is a very, very close contender, it's slightly more sensitive than the DX, but doesn't have the power.

Yeah, Hooligan. One of the things that jumped out at me looking at the DX784 specs...that 15" butt section. A long, conventional (non split) cork grip is one of my key criteria for my next jig rod. I'm really liking the 7'8" length also....perfect for me. I'm a little torn between the 4-5 power, but it seems like the 784 is more like a 4.5. I'm getting the feeling like she might be the one....

I received a very generous offer to test drive an NRX, so I am definately going to give that a shot, also. It's over my (somewhat arbitrary) price figure of $350, but I'll spend more on the "right one".

You are 100% correct on the 784 being a like a 4.5 power rod. I agree with Hooligan on the 784 being a good grass jig rod, but I wouldn't be throwing a 3/4 oz. flipping jig in cover that is too heavy. If you're wanting to cover anything from a 3/8 oz. jig on a hard bottom to a 3/4 oz. jig in heavy cover, I would opt for the 745. The actions of these two rods are sort of difficult to explain, but I'll give it a try.

The 745 has a slightly more moderate action than the 784, but is definitely more powerful. When I set the hook on a fish in heavy wood cover with the DX745, it just feels perfect, whether I am using 65# braid or 20# flouro. It loads up perfectly for a solid hookset that won't tear the hook out of their mouth, especially with braid.

Basically, I would leave it at this: If you're planning on fishing 3/8-1/2 oz. jigs in open water or light cover, you could get away with the 784 for sure. But, if you want to do that AND be able to pull a 7+ out of heavy cover with a heavy jig, I would go for the 745.

Either way, you're getting one hell of a rod.

I've got a 735c an 805c and a 766FLIP so I think I've got the heavier stuff covered. I'm looking for a dedicated rod to use with 3/8 to 3/4oz jigs. I think the 745 or the 784 will serve the purpose.

I have personally thrown 3/4oz jigs with a pork trailer around rocky cover with the DX744 and do not feel that the rod felt taxed at all. However, in heavy cover more power would be appreciated. I just picked up a DX784, but unfortunately I will not be able to fish it until the spring (I have already started counting the days...) so I cannot give much insight here.

I can tell you that I agree with what has been stated, that the DX784 is slightly more powerful and has a stiffer tip than the DX744, so it will fish more like an ex-fast rod vs. a fast rod. However, when loaded I find the mid-section of the DX784 to be slightly more moderate in action and bend further down the blank than the DX744. It's a bit strange, but again I have not fished the DX784 so I cannot verify this when truly under load. All I have to go by is the old trusted press the rod into the carpet test...

I have not fished or held the Dx745 yet. However, if you will be fishing in the slop or other heavy cover more often than not, I would probably lean that way since it has more power than both the DX744 and DX784.

I don't disagree, wholly, just in part. I really feel like the 784 is more powerful for the long haul than the 745 and I think a lot of that is from the portion of the rod from about 6" in front of the seat all the way down. I think you'll stop more with the 745, but you get in a tough spot and you can apply more pressure with the 784, even though it's slightly longer. Definite advantage for deep jigs, the tip speed generates tremendous force on the hook-set; a disadvantage of the NRX, sometimes. But then, the NRX is so light and powerful that you don't miss the extra length. To say the 745 is slightly more moderate is an accurate statement, for that matter, there's no better way to describe it. I think some of that, though, comes from the length difference in the two. Then again, the 784 is more powerful in the lower third of the rod and the 745 seems to carry significantly more power in the upper two thirds of the blank, if anything, it might be more even, in terms of where the rod loads....

Anyhow, the rods you're looking at are both superb rods, all three if you count the NRX in there.

I should also add that I was looking for a do-it-all jig rod and the 745 seemed to fit that bill for me. I tend to like a stouter rod than most for jig fishing. To me the 745 feels perfect with a 1/2 oz. jig and Rage Lobster trailer. Was throwing the same jig with a Sr. Paca Chunk the other day and there was a lot less drag and the jig felt lighter, in that case I would have preferred the 784, but I rarely (rarely meaning never, there just isn't a Bama Craw Lobster) fish Paca Chunks.

It's interesting you read the opinions on the various Dobyns models because I just ordered the DX784. My buddy got his in April and I was able to fish it for a couple of hours. I really fell in love with this rod. I guess in several months I can give a better evaluation. The sensitivity and the balance won me over. It just doesn't feel like a 7'8" rod.

UPDATE: After some consideration I decided to go with the Dobyns 745DX. It arrived yesterday and so far I love it. Got to use it a little bit today. Cant wait to stick a hawg on it. Thanks for all the comments everybody.

I really like the Denali rosewood multipurpose 7'4 MH rod. To me that is one of the best out there. Also the 7'2 rosewood worm and jig rod would be another good one. Be on the lookout at Icast for what Denali has coming new!

I havent had enough time fishing my DX744 and 745 to have concrete opinions of them but I'm underwhelmed currently.

I have 2 alx rods that I'm hoping to take out next week that match up spec wise to the dobyns. Hope to have some better opinions then.
