Pay It Forward! 2024

fishing user avatarJoshd reply :

I received a reel in an agreement that stated I must pay it forward. I am happy to offering items that mean a lot to me. It is all my first lucky lures. I am not offering these because I don't use them or I have better ones. I am offering them because I this is my go to tackle.

I can't upload pictures because it says the files are to big. So I will add them to my Facebook profile.

Requirements:

1. You must be new to fishing. I prefer someone who does not have many lures yet. You can be a lurker or new member; I don't care so long as you can honestly use this equipment.

2. You must be a resident of the U.S.

3. You must, within one month, post something for free to help other new fishermen. I understand if you don't have a lot of stuff yet and I'm not asking for a lot to be posted. What I do ask is that you post something even if it's just a lure that doesn't work for you.

Any questions, please post here or PM me.

Regards,

Josh Davis

Josh, we've tried this in the past.  There will be a lot of takers out there who want something for nothing.  Make sure that they have to pay for shipping.  That eliminates a lot of the scum, but don't get your hopes up that your gift will be paid forward.

fishing user avatarJoshd reply :

I'll hope for the best

Mike,

I understand.  I'm glad JoshD was so quick on this -- I'm just now getting to his PM and his shipping label.  It appears he's much faster on the draw.  He must be younger.

I gave the initial reel.  If you'll bear with me, I'll stretch the rules a bit and hope it's overlooked for being a good cause:

When I was younger, 18-20, I lost a friend due to violence over drugs.  I was no into drugs and didn't realize he was in as deep as he was.  I still don't think he was in that deep, but doing what some teenagers will do when they're bored, he was at a party, someone (who was tripping on acid) started playing with an illegally possessed handgun, and shot my friend through the aorta near the heart.  He died.

At 20, I entered school for law enforcement.  When I turned 21, I was able to get bonded and hired as armed security for night escort of cab drivers.  This led, in a convoluted way, to entering as a "soldier" on the "war on drugs."

One night, I was shot at and hit.  I returned fire accurately.  I wore a vest and the guy who did the shooting didn't.

Fast forward almost half a lifetime.

I accept the war on drugs is lost.  Researching the premise on which it was founded, it really didn't have a chance of ever succeeding.  Mrs. Reagan's "Just Say No" campaign did more than a thousand raids.  I'm not being political, but rather I'm stating the facts as I learned them.

Education is the key.  Boredom is a huge factor in drug use and other idiocy.  An hour on the lake is an hour a kid, or adult, or whomever is not using.

The key to this Pay It Forward is that I don't expect anything back except for the requirement that something be listed by the recipient.

I like rebuilding and tuning reels.  When I get them inexpensively, it gives me something to do when I can't get out and fish but have down time in my shop, say, when products are bluing or being heat treated.  Maybe it will help someone out, too.

That's where I'm coming from.  I'd do this whether I gave the end results away or not, and so I choose to do so.

Regards,

Josh

Not really sure if this counts but I have recently come to know a young man at a local pond that loves to fish but he has a young family and I don't think has a lot of money to spend on gear.  He shows up with a beat up old rod and reel and a hand full of plastics in an old Power bait bag.  I opened my tackle box to him and he respectfully takes a few items now and then (ALWAYS asking first).  He recently had a new son and I gave him a couple of bags of Zoom worms and grubs.  I dipped a couple them in Spike it so he could have some variety.  I asked him if he even had a tackle box and he said he couldn't afford one.  *sigh*  Would you be interested in giving him this one?  I, in turn, will fill it with terminal tackle and soft baits.  (He loves the soft baits).  I would post what I give him on here.  I'm not sure if this is in spirit with what you're trying to do...if not, I understand.  If so, I'll happily take this stuff and pass it on to a good young man that could use a break.  He's a pretty proud kid, so I would probably do it anonymously and say it's from his friends at BassResource.com.

(BTW....whether this works out or not, I'm gonna set this kid up.  We all need a hand up once in a while.)

I have been buying school stuff for the kids, paying tuition (handwriting fee?  really?  they don't even teach handwriting anymore, just printing!) and whatnot.

If you're still gathering stuff after I recover, I'll see about sending something.  Mann's Jelly Worms, for example, must be in every tacklebox.

Josh

No problem.......I didn't expect this to turn into a big thing and I wouldn't expect anyone to do anything above and beyond.  I wouldn't have even mentioned this on this board if I hadn't seen this thread.  Do you have a particular color you like best?  I will put those in there myself.

Jaderose, pm me your mailing address and I will ship this stuff out to you.

fishing user avatarSlipknot_Fan666 reply :

I would pitch in if I had something to give and knew how to ship items. I don't have anything to give though, unfortunately.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

How about paying it forward to your local fishing club. Many team up and have a Kids program. Donate to cub scouts, or heck, walk the local lakes and find some one that seems to be starting out, having a rough day, or looks to be more inexperienced than you, and give/teach them. Whole lot more satisfying, less risk if being scammed.

This is exactly what's happening in this thread.  I know a young man that needs some gear.  A couple of guys are throwing some stuff my way to give him and I, of course, will add to it.

fishing user avatarMr_Scrogg reply :

Not saying you are not doing what you say. Many people, including myself, have been scammed before.

Id rather give to someone or some organization personally, or an organization I trust, like "Tackle the Storm"

I understand nor do I think your view is a shot at me.  I'm fairly new here and I understand if this situation seems like it might be unlikely.  I asked all the guys who have offered to not send too much and certainly nothing that would create any kind of hardship.  I can offer nothing at this point other than my word that nothing I receive will go in my box.  If I see something I like, I will buy it for myself.

fishing user avatarBuckyKat reply :

Jaderose,

PM me your address, I've got a few bags of plastics and some other things that are begging to get out of the closet and into the water.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I'm gonna stop there, folks.  There are 5 or 6 people that are kicking in a few items and I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate the response.  My friend is a nice young man with a young family and not a lot of money.  As we all know, fishing can ease the burden of responsibility, if even for an hour or two.  I've watched the kid struggle with old beat up gear and carrying a few soft baits in an old powerbait bag.  With a new tackle box, some terminal tackle and a mess of hard and soft baits, he'll do ok.  I'm gonna kick in a new Pflueger Trion Combo that I have and don't use.

This thread failed once before. I hope it works better this time. Only time will tell

fishing user avatarJoshd reply :

Sorry for the delay on shipping the tackle box today. It is the busy season for landscaping!!

I busted the small crainkbait on a rail at a fishing dock but I am adding a spinner to replace it. I hope that guy really enjoys fishing with them. It is kind of hard to let this tackle go.

I was one of the strongest critics of this thread when things began going south.  I am giving it another chance.  My box is sent and I trust it is for a good cause.  If I am getting suckered then at least I know my heart was in the right place.  :)

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Felix,

Got your box today......PERFECT!!!!  This is EXACTLY the type of stuff I was talking about.  Felix sent 7 or 8 bags of various soft plastics, some cranks and a top water popper or 2.  (Sorry...I haven't had a chance to completely go through it yet).  When I get everything, I will take a picture and credit everything to everybody that sent.  I told my stepson about this (he's 18) and he said, "I wish the whole internet was like that".  I gotta admit that the the Mystery Tacklebox box you sent it in threw me at first...I thought "When the hell did I order that?"  Lol.  Thank you for your generosity and I can Guarantee that my young friend will be thrilled.

Got more goodies today.  I got JoshD's tacklebox which started this whole thing along with other goodies and the nice package from thedukeca with some Roboworms, a super nice topwater frog, and a KVD crank.  I also had a guy at work give me 2 older Baitcasters.  One of which is an old Swedish made Abu Mag1.  THAT one, I'm going to clean up, lube, and either buy or give it back to my friend at work.  I asked him if he realized what he had given me but he didn't seem to care.  He might after he sees it cleaned up.

In the very near future I'm going to put this all together, take a picture so everyone can see what my buddy is getting and from whom, and get it to Ryan.

This the haul I got from the guys on here.  I put the names with the stuff they sent.  I will be giving him some terminal tackle, some soft baits and his choice of 2 Spinning reel combo's I have.  One is a brand new Pfleuger Trion on a Cabelas Copper River pole OR a Vintage but never fished Penn on a Vintage hand tied pole.  I actually hope he takes the Pfleuger because the Penn is so nice, but it will be up to him without any influence from me.  Plus, the Penn is on the wrong side for me and is NOT adjustable.  If he DOES take the Penn, it will have a good home and won't just be a display piece like it is for me.  It's on the right side for him.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I was reminded that I had not updated this thread and I apologize for that.  My guy got his stuff and he was thrilled.  On Sunday the 17th, I saw him at Walmart and he said he was going out fishing that afternoon.  I had all the stuff rounded up so I told him that I'd meet him at the pond we go to later in the day.  I went and sure enough, he was there.  I had the stuff with me, including the 2 spinning set-ups I had.  I suggested we go to a different place when the fish weren't biting.  He got in my truck and had to move all the stuff you guys sent.  On the way out, I told him about this thread and I hoped he wasn't mad at me, but I mentioned his name and situation (new Baby, etc) and that a group of fellow fishermen had sent stuff to me to give to him.  I explained that it wasn't "charity", per se, but rather a group of fellow fishermen helping a Brother out.  That the only thing expected of him was to pay it forward if and when he could.  He tore into the boxes and was gob-smacked by everything.  When we got to the lake, I told him to try out both spinning rigs that were in the back of the truck and whichever one he liked the best, was his.  Turns out he had recently broken his old spinning rod and was using an ancient Zebco 33 that had seen better days.  He went with the new Pfleuger on the Cabela's Copper River pole.  I told him about this website and urged him to join..not only to say the thank you's I know he wants to say but also for the great info and fellowship on this great website.

On behalf of my friend Ryan, I say thank you.  I also say thank you for myself.  Being put in the situation of helping a fellow fisherman was a very rewarding experience and one I will repeat.
