The only ones that have failed me are those that escaped over the side of the boat when I was not paying attention. I use 40s and 50s for trolling and coastal fishing. I use 20s and 30s for throwing lures for bass. I think that the 30 will do the job for you without wearing you out. I use 8 lb. mono on my 30s and have had no issues. Great reel.

Answer: It depends on where you are going after 8 pound. If it is clogged with weeds and obstructions the 40 with 12 or 15 is perfect. If the water is free of things the bass can tangle the line around then the Trio 30 is adequate. I would use a 40 for worms and a 30 for top water or lures.

Answer: I own 3 of the 30's and find them perfect for medium-light applications (trolling for crappies, small mouth bass etc) this reel is well made and has a smooth drag system... however limited spool capacity ! I think the 40 or 50 would be a better choice for you.

Answer: I think the 30 will handle most of those needs. The drag system is excellent. I can run 10 and 12 pound line on it fine. If your averaging monster fish consistantly you may think about the 40. But ive had no problem yet, and I only fish rivers.

Answer: Hi Vang. A lot depends on what you want to fish for. If it was me I would opt for the Trio 30. You'll find line capacities for the 30 on your Amazon site and from that you can decide if the reel would hold enough line to handle the fish you're after. I would choose the 30 because it's a smaller reel and would probably offer a more balanced outfit with your 5' rod, which is important if you're going to fish all day with it. These are well made reels and have landed atlantic salmon to 14lbs on my 40.

I fish mainly trout in the eastern sierras. looking for a good reel to pair up with a okuma sst rod i just got.

Answer: Hi. I'm a big fan of this reel and have landed many fish (trout and sea trout) with it. The sst is an excellent rod and I would think the two would go together well. I don't know what size your rod is but I use the 40 reel and it balances well with rods 6'6", 9'3" & 10'. I use good quality 6 or 8lb line and have taken brownies to 2lbs, sea trout to 4lbs and rainbows to 7lbs. I use the reel for worming and spinning but you must look after it especially after use in the salt. AND! it looks really cool. Tight lines Animals.

Answer: if you looking for a reel that is comfortable, small in the palm of your hand for all day use and less fatigue due to its lightweight design you pretty much have dynamic combination along with the TCS rod for the application you want. I would think the two would go together well.

Answer: After owning this reel for onr year now, I got hink it would be a very suitable reel for.that rod. And.the drag system is excelent. Espciaally when dealing with salmon or trout.

Answer: It would be great for trout fishing. Your line and pole would be the biggest difference for using this reel. I use it for light saltwater fishing and would def use it for some trout back at home.

Answer: The trio30 is a nice medium size reel, and it is very smooth. It holds 160yds of 8lb mono. I use it for most of my fresh water fishing, trout , bass, etc. The trio20 is more for an ultra lite setup. The trio40 is bigger, I use that one with 65lb braid, mainly because I can get more, heavier line on it.

Love this combination. set a #4 Circle hook with 18" 20# Fluorocarbon leader and caught a number of 16'+ Lane Snappers. great fight.

Answer: The specs say about 100 yards of 20lb braid but in practice the spool on the Trio 20 is actually quite small and fills up very fast. I wouldn't use anything bigger than 15lb braid honestly. The Trio 30 would be the way to go if you need 20lb are larger.

Answer: first of all I have the Trio 40 and use it for insore bay fishing and absolutely love it.as good as my shimano stradic at 3 time the price.i paired it with a shimano sojourn model SJS7OMA rod which is a 7 ft.med.fast action rod which is med.range shimano rod but you won't be disappointed they go great together.hope this helps and good luck fishing.

Answer: I'm not an expert on that type of fishing, but I would think that a 7ft. medium action rod would do the trick. I use Fenwick HMG rods and they do fine catching 3-8 lb. walleye in moving water.

Answer: The rod is half based on the anglers preference and half based on utility. If you are saltwater fishing I think a 6'6'' medium to medium heavy would be nice. I wouldn't go any smaller than that.

What's the difference between this standard speed okuma trio reel and the orange high speed okuma trio reel or are they the same?

Answer: High speed has a gear ratio of 6.2:1 which means a faster retrieve. Regular Trio is 5.0:1 which is noticeably slower retrieve. Both are great depending on application.

Answer: No the Orange one has a higher ratio, which helps your reel faster with less effort. The reels are specified on were and what you use to fish.

Answer: The Trio 20 is a ultra light, but you may like the Trio 30S better. It's small but stronger the then average 30 size which makes it more versatile.

Answer: I realize that this question was asked a long time ago. But, here's my answer: Some people might consider the Trio 20 to be ultra-light because it is designed to hold 4, 6 & 8 lb line. But to me, it's more of a light to medium-light reel...good for crappie, trout, smaller bass, smaller cats, etc. In my opinion, the Trio 20 is not a true ultra light reel. But it's close.

I have quite a few spinning reels that retail for more than this reel, but I am impressed with what Okuma has come up with in this model. It looks good, feels solid, well fitted, has a loud drag clicker and the best line clip I've seen. It's smooth operating and has a very strong as well as smooth drag. I liked it so much that I just ordered a 30 size in it too. They just need to include a spare spool. All spinning reels should come with a spare spool and not a cheap spare but a spare spool exactly like the one on the reel. Okuma is becoming a reel manufacturer that seems to be constantly getting better at producing a professional grade product that you can afford. This reel would be a good buy at far more money than what it sells for, considering it compares favorably with 150-200 dollar reels.

Bought a Trio 20 2 years ago, put it on an okuma 8' ultra light rod. Have caught hundreds of perch on this since then, plenty of smaller bass and a few trout. This reel looks really cool and I have zero complaints on it. I can only recommend this reel. For the money I don't think you can find better. I have not done anything special to store it, just fish and back into the spare room until next time.

Inform : Good Reels but Customer Service Issues

I have had both the Trio 55 and 65 for years now and both have held very well. I have recently moved away from Okuma reels due to their total lack of customer service. You will probably run into issues with the Okuma if you have a warranty issue, as they will not answer emails or phone calls. Both reels have served me well into the entry of saltwater fishing. I went to replace a few parts on my Trio 55 and found that the parts added up to 2/3 the cost of the reel, so it's not worth keeping.

W.P. : Okuma Trio 30 and Ecooda BH3000

I have only a couple of months using a pair of new reels: Okuma Trio 30 standard speed ($57) and an Ecooda Black Hawk BH 3000 ($80), but I am highly impressed with both. This is my first time with either brand, normally having Quantum, Abu Garcia or Daiwa. The feel of both reels immediately conveys a sense of excellent construction. Although the Ecooda should have a better drag system, I haven't had any reason to doubt the Okuma either. The auto-bail on the Okuma works fluidly and as expected, whereas the Ecooda prefers to be put down manually. I find myself preferring the Okuma, although there is little difference. I don't care for closing the bail manually when throwing spinnerbaits. Between that preference and being over $20 cheaper, that would put the Okuma Trio 30 as the better buy. Time and usage may separate the two more in performance and longevity, but for now I give both 5 stars as the finest reels I've owned (all under $100). I may end up picking up another and would be happy with either.

4/2016 update: The Okuma Trio 30 is still my favorite spinning reel. I've paired it with a 13 Fishing 7'1" medium fast action rod, for the perfect combo. I've landed from well under a pound up to an 8lb largemouth with no complaints, no drag or casting issues. I can't say the same for the Ecooda BH3000 I bought at the time which has developed (withing a short time of my original review) a grinding noise/action with nothing evident to cause it. The Okuma soldiers on. I have an Okuma Avenger that is not of the same quality, but not a bad reel. My next Spinning reel will be another Trio or something up the Okuma line, possibly my next baitcasting. I doubt I will buy another Ecooda.

uff que puedo decir del carretito ya he usado varias marcas, principalmente shimano (stella 20, 10, 8, saragosa 10, 14 y 18 modelo anterior y 10 modelo nuevo, biomaster, sienna, ultegra xsc 10), daiwa y okuma, así que llegando en la tienda de pesca lo abrimos para revisar, si eres de clima seco como yo es ampliamente recomendable hacerlo para cambiar la grasa por una más adecuada que no se licué con el clima cálido, se debe tener mucho cuidado ya que el antireversa funciona en seco y además este carrete no está sellado, en dado caso de usarse en agua salada se debe tener en cuenta que debe ser enjuagado inmediatamente después del uso ya que sino se puede pegar, al desarmarlo pudimos ver que está bien construido a pesar de su pequeño tamaño es robusto en materiales y resistente, ya fue usado (en el mar) capturando cabrillas, pargos, gallo y cochitos, por su tamaño es especial para empatarse con una caña de 7 u 8 pies ligera o ultra ligera, yo lo uso con línea de 20 libras de 8 ebras (spectra) japonesa (un poco más delgada que la power pro del mismo libraje) y le cupieron 180 metros, es un carrete bastante entretenido ya que te permite pelear con animales por un buen tiempo.

Gsq : Awesome reel for under $100

Great reel in the sub $100 line up. Put this in rotation with my okuma helios and my quantum exo's. Iv been so impressed with okuma a quality compared to other more known brands.

Pro's- smooth all around reel. Nice smooth drag with plenty of stopping power. The aesthetics of this reel are beautiful. No play what so ever in the handle.
Con's-weight. This thing is heavy. It's the first thing you notice. I could be that I'm coming from light reels like the helios and exo but this this is a heavy. Lack of spare spool.

Other then the weight and spool I have no real complaints. It's a great reel for under $100. I actually replaced my quantum smoke with this reel. It's a nice fit in the 30 size on a 6-6 shimano crucial and it lays braid Nicely. I would have no issue taking this reel shore fishing which is something I would never do with my quantum exo or okuma helios out of fear or smashing up $200 reels. So If you are lookin for a great reel for under $100 add this one to the list.

Pretty good reel for the price. Reels smooth , handles big fish well (20 lb carp) and looks nice. I thought it looked cheap when I first got it but overall I like it.

The TRIO is a nice solid reel. I have a 40 and a 55s now. It casts a 7/32 oz. practice plug about 90' with ease & has a nice solid heavy drag. I plan to use it for back bay applications. The design & construction is different from other reels I have & interesting to look at.

This reel was smooth as butter out of the box. It's really small and light, perfect for the set-up I was going for: an ultra light rod and reel for snagging small trout and small-mouth. I've got it paired with a 5' Shimano Voltaeus rod spooled with 4lb test and I've got to say it's one of the most fun set-ups I've used. It makes a 12oz fish feel like a real lunker! The reel is well made and assembled, it's obviously precision crafting. I'm considering getting a second (larger) one just because I like the way they feel. Oh yeah, it looks rally cool too.

Awsome reel. Own this and the Highspeed trio and they are both good preformers. They cast smoothly and reel in even more smooth. The trio is a 5 to 1 ratio and the Highspeed is 6 to 1. Other than the ratio the only thing different than that is the color and the knob on the reel handle. get one you will not regret it.

Can't give this a full 5 stars...yet. I have not fished with it since it is still winter here in Alaska. However, the solid construction and smooth operation feels right. I own several other Okuma reels in this price range and have yet to be disappointed.

The Okuma Trio combines value and function in a single reel. I have three with this one being the smallest. Loaded this one up with 30 lb braid and is worked great in the surf of Cape Hatteras.

Wish I could give a better review, because the reel looks like a bulldog next to all the other standard coffee grinders in the display case. I purchased the Trio 20 from Sport Chalet and had it strung up with a $20 spool of flouro. Playing with it when I got home, I tested the drag and sure enough it was gummed up, sticky, and far from smooth. Took it back the Chalet, and I had the fishing 'expert' check it out as well, and we both agreed that I'd lose fish with the drag system the way it was out of the box. I tried the same spool on another reel at the store, and the same problem persisted. Don't know if I bought a lemon, but I didn't even get it close to the water before returning it. I'd like to hope it was a dud, but buyer beware. I'd definitely check it out at a store before committing to it online. Happy fishing.

This is the replacement for the first reel

First one had bad gear gringing after a few fish on the first day of using it, pulled the side cover very little grease, amazon sent replacement, i pulled the side cover and greased with penn reel grease, first day out 15 fish and gear grinding feel again. Get a pflueger president xt, you'll be more satisfied!

I've been using Shimano reels for almost 25 years, but after seeing the Okuma Trio at Wal Mart of all places, I was sold. It's super light weight, has nice, thick bail wire, and is as smooth as butter. I paired this up with an Okuma Tarvos rod, since that's the set up that was being sold at Wally World, and I haven't looked back since. It's such a light weight set up, I may never go back to Shimano again. The Trio is awesome.

SpeedJT : Typical Okuma, seams smooth, but poor quality

Usually I don't write this much reviews. But this typical Okuma made me have to say something, and I hope my review can help the rest of your guys stay away from the marketing gimmicks
1. "Hybrid spool design with graphite arbor and aluminum lip" Total BS! Here's why.The spool is plastic and Okuma puts a aluminum skirt on the reel. Do you really expect aluminum skirt to take on the force? The only thing that alum skirt can do is decoration.
2. Hybrid rotor. Again Aluminum mounted on plastic and only connected with one screw.
3. After hooking on two red fish, the reel started sound a little weird. For every turn I can feel a bit stop at some point. I originally thought something got stuck in the handle gap or somewhere. But after I took the reel body apart, I found a plastic shaft connecting the main gear and the back switch is misshapen. I don't think for a reel that cast $60 buck would break like this.
So my summary: Okuma tried to keep the cost down by using poor quality components and used the marketing terms to boast a mediocre reel

I'm not a big fan of buying rods or reels online but I decided to try a Trio-20. I bought it to pair with a short rod for panfishing, it was larger than I expected but works well. Due to the larger size I decided to try it with some bass and have had great results, I currently use it with 10 pound braid. This reel is so smooth and quiet you will not regret using it. I have used the 20 to pull in 3-5 pound largemouth regularly and love it. I can cast it a mile and it has a nice, quiet, smooth retrieve. It has become my go to reel in almost all situations. I plan to get a larger one, maybe the 40 or 55, for next season.
