Questions about Okuma SLV Diecast Aluminum Fly Reel
Q:
Which reel is recommended for a 5wt 8'6" TFO rod, the 4/5 or the 5/6? I'm a noob.Mostly fishing Texas lakes, ponds and streams 4 panfish & small bass
Answer: I use the 5/6 with my 5wt rods. I have a Ross rod and TFO 9 ft 5wt. 5wt forward floating line. 100 ft of backing.
Answer: The 5/6 is plenty light enough and holds lots of backing. If you are not worried about backing then the 4/5 should work fine as well and look a little smaller.
Answer: I'm no fly fishing expert so I'll let someone else answer that with more detail. I encountered the same dilemma with my 5wt and I went with the 5/6 so I could have more capacity for line. Panfish and small bass probably won't pull a ton of line out and the reel might be more along the lines of a "line holder" but if you think there is a chance of hooking into some bigger fish with it I'd look at the 5/6.
Answer: 5/6 plenty light enough and holds lots of backing and big enough to handle larger flies and poppers for the bass and panfish. It's big enough that if you hook a bigger bass(2+ lbs) you'll be able to handle it.
Answer: Get the 5/6.
Q:
is the drag silent?
Answer: I have one. The Drag clicks, but the Retrieve is Silent. That clears it up!
Answer: Yes, The drag is silent. Some earlier versions had a floating clicker mechanism but it it served no real purpose apart from providing a klicking noise!
Answer: No , but why would that matter . Just adds to the intensity .
Answer: Yes. Very good reel for the money.
Q:
can I use a 5/6 replacement spool on my 8/9 slv reel? Should I just buy the 5/6 reel for my 6 weight instead of trying to use my 8/9 slv from my 8 wt
Answer: No. You can not interchange sizes of spools. What you can do is us a larger reel on a smaller rod. I personally would get a new reel for my smaller rod. This will help keep from confusing the line sizes. Choosing a reel is more about the fish you are fishin for and how big the rod frame is. Large fish that are big runners go up a reel size. For less athletic fish a smaller reel is fine.
Q:
I need the price of a Okinawa 78 fly reel
Answer: Just look online at amazon.com
Q:
what model holds a 9 weifgt line?
Answer: the model no. is the clue slv_45 is fpr a 4 or 5 wt line...so look for a slv_89....regards...mjg
Answer: Hi, the Okuma SLV 8/9. Great Reel. You can buy it here: http://www.amazon.com/Okuma-SLV-Fly-Reel-SLV89/dp/B000JQIEDK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1394731187&sr=8-3&keywords=okuma+SLV+8+9 or here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xreel+slv+9&_nkw=reel+slv+9&_sacat=0&_from=R40
Answer: The 8/9 model
Answer: You'll need the SLV 89
Q:
How much line will it hold?
Answer: a standard fly line plus approx. 100 yds of backing
Q:
what model will be best fit for the line weight 5/6?
Answer: If you're using the conventional one hand for fly fishing I would recommend 7/8 weight. It gives you that little bit of extra room for the line weights that are in today's market.
Answer: the 56
Q:
Which SLV is equivalent to a 4wt reel?
Answer: The slv 4/5 is made for 4 or 5 wt lines. Note the reel is a large arbor design and will look bigger than normal if your 4wt rod is a short midge variety but will work fine as they re fairly light.
Answer: The 4/5 would work very well with a 4wt rod.
Q:
The item shown has an aluminum finish. I've seen the reel elsewhere in a matte gray. What color/finish is the SLV56 reel you sell?
Answer: Powder coat silver
Q:
Can this be used in saltwater?
Answer: I have used this reel in 8 at. only in salt water for the past 6 months and it has held up perfectly so far. I use for speckled trout and redfish. I think with proper maintenance it will be fine. I love this reel and will probably purchase another one.
Answer: Yes it can. The reel has a sealed bearing system. Just be sure to rinse the reel with fresh water, clean any debris, and finally allow it to air dry.
Answer: Not recommended by me. It is a good reel but not of the highest quality materials for salt watter.
Q:
What are the differences between spool and reel? especially for 10/11 why the price differs?
Answer: The spool is just a spare spool. The reel comes with a spool. Hope this helps
Q:
Will this work for steelhead fishing the creeks of erir pa
Answer: Absolutely this reel has very good brakes
Q:
Why can't this be shipped with amazon prime to my alaska address zip code 99603? i order tons of stuff with amazon prime and usually works fine.
Answer: We are shipping this reel and not amazon, that is why the prime doesn't apply.
Q:
Can i use the 5-6 reel on both my 5wt and 8wt fiberglass rods?
Answer: I suppose you could if you can fit a # 8 line on the spool.
Answer: yes
Q:
I need the price of a Okuma slv78 fly reel
Answer: $49 and change at amazon.com.
Q:
Does anyone know what the weight is for this reel in size 7/8?
Answer: I dont know. Just wanted to say i have the 4/5 and it is an excellent reel.
Q:
Is this a "pawl click" drag?
Answer: Disc drag, tension can be adjusted by turning the knob on the reel,
Answer: Disc drag, tension can be adjusted by turning the knob on the reel,
Answer: no
Q:
the selection that reads "slv-1011" only depicts the spool; the same picture that "slv-1011 spare spool" depicts, is that a glitch or...?
Answer: Same applies to the actual reel.
Q:
Do you have to buy the slv 45 and the slv 45 spool? why is there two choices of everything?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: slv45 is the reel, slv45 spool is an extra spool for the reel.
Answer: One is the whole reel and one is the spool only.
Q:
Does this reel have a sealed drag? I'd like to use it in saltwater. I've read that a sealed drag is highly recommended for this type of application.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I do not believe this reel has a sealed drag but it is built to be used in fresh and salt environments and has stainless steel components.
Answer: No the drag is not sealed on these reels.
Answer: No, this reel in not recommended to be used in salt water.
Answer: It does not have a sealed drag system.
Q:
I'm a begginer and want to start fly fishing what is a good reel out of these that is good for trout fishing?
Answer: Anna - This is an outstanding reel for the price. Excellent choice for a beginner. 4/5wt reel matched with a 5 wt rod will be your best all round choice for Trout.
Answer: The Okuma is a good mid range fly reel, I recommend it without a problem.
Answer: I would get the SLV 56. It's still small enough for trout, but you could also use it for a shooting line system if you really get into fly fishing.
Answer: The SLV is a great reel for many species. I own 3 SLV's in various sizes. It is light weight, dependable, and very fairly priced. If you want to spend a little less, the sierra is well suited for trout as is the cascade. None will let you down. The SLV is a large arbor design which means it is wider and the spool is not as deep, which I like for several reasons, and the drag nob is large and convenient. If you prefer the traditional shape over the large arbor go with the Sierra.
Answer: although amazon sent me a scratched one (and quickly replaced it), i am a big fan of these okuma's. well made and a good price. i have 3 different sizes. the 4/5 one is probably the best "average" sized one. btw, okuma makes rods that are a good deal too. i ordered one from walmart.com.
Answer: Excellent reel, you can't go wrong with this. Buy and extra spool so you can use floating or sinking line by just popping on the other spool. You could pay 2-3 this price for no better reel
Q:
the picture is of a spool.does it come with a frame also?
Answer: The picture displayed is of the entire reel, spool included. A spool is separate and...please note!...does NOT have the feet that attach the reel to the rod, via the reel-seat. If you have not attachment feet on the item you are ordering, then you have a 'spool' and not a reel. Without 'feet', you cannot attach the reel to the reel-seat on the rod. Expect to pay about $45 for a spool and about $65 for the entire reel. I have not looked at prices this morning; I am ordering a Okuma SLV 2/3 'spool'...I have two of these reels and they are very good.
Answer: Yes comes with frame too
Answer: Yes...but when you order it make sure you pay attention. ..the model # accompanied by the word "-SPOOL" is the spool only. ..i purchased this reel and I love it!
Answer: Yes fully functional, I love it
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can these be used on spey rods?
Answer: you must match up the fly reel with the line weight of your rod. most spey rods are 12 foot and longer, with 6,7,8,9,10 line weight. take into consideration spey lines are bigger in diameter and take up more room on the reel. I usually go one size or two sizes up on the reel to compensate for the spey line thickness. Hope this helps.
Answer: spey rods usually use larger reels
Q:
I have a 6 wieght cane trout rod and imagine i will be fishing small rivers,should i get, a 7/8 with 6 or 7 or 5/6 with 6 or 7 ?
Answer: I would get the 5/6 should be all you need plenty of backing and go with 5 or 6 wt line has plenty of drag also
Answer: 5/6
Q:
Is the 125166 # a 5/6 wt. reel ?
Answer: I use it for a 6 weight. It is a great reel. like it better than the similar priced Orvis. Caught a half dozen 3 to 5 lb trout no problem.
Answer: It is both. At least that is the manufacturer's claim. I have a 5-weight line on mine and I have no complaints.
Q:
What lb dacron backing and how many yards should i load on the slv 45?
Answer: I've got 75 yards of 20lb backing on min which is more than enough. But it also depends on your adversary and their environment. In the 4/5 weight class i believe 50 -75yards is adequate. Hope this helps. Tight lines homie.
Answer: 50 to 100lb backing. As to how much backing depends on the type of fly line your putting on. Different diameter fly line means more or less backing.
Q:
Are you buying a spool or a reel?
Answer: If the price is around 50 bucks it would be for the reel. The spools are 30 bucks or less.
Answer: If this is the one that offers a reel and spool for like $70 all I receive was the reel. When I contacted the outfit that sent it to me I had no response on getting the spare spool. I’d have to say that it’s false advertising
Answer: The listing is for the complete reel.
Answer: I bought the reel. It is a light duty has a decent drag and is inexpensive
Answer: Spool
Answer: Complete reel assembly
Q:
Is this reel made for salt water ?
Answer: Any reel, however well-made and durable, can be damaged by prolonged use in salt-water UNLESS you wash reel and line in a sink full of warm water. Because I use the SLV reels, usually of smaller line-size, in fresh water, I do not know about specific resistance to corrosion, but why take the chance? A well-crafted piece of equipment should be treated properly...wash and dry; wipe off, with wet cloth, residues of salt deposits from lines, too, and allow the lines to dry. Use a bit of Line Speed to protect the finish. Enjoy your reel; it is a good one; I have three now.
Answer: I have used it in salt water quite a lot and it works fine.
Answer: No the bearing is not sealed
Q:
I'd like to double check the weight. the slv 23 is listed at 1lb, i assume that is a typo? what is the proper weight for the reel with spool?
Answer: The SLV-23 reel weighs 4.5 oz.
Answer: Less than a lb. It's a very light weight and small reel.
Answer: I'm not really sure of the weight in ounces, but it's light. Yes, way less than a pound, and a really nice little reel for the price.
Q:
Looking at a 10'6" Rod for Czech/French nymphing, on a budget. Looking at a 4wt, I know balance is important, is this reel going to balance properly?
Q:
is this just the spool or is it the reel with the spool?
Answer: It is the complete reel assembly.
Answer: It says "Fly reel!
Q:
Backing line required?
Answer: Not required but helpful if you hook up with a big fish
Answer: Yes, and you'll need to get backing as a separate transaction.
Q:
what size of the slv series of reels would be best for catching carp on a 7/8 weight rod
Answer: Definitely a 7/8 as you will need plenty of backing for these fish. Best reel I've used in a long time... and I have many from various manufacturers.
Answer: Use the slv 7/8 reel. The wieght of the reel needs to be in balance with the wieght of the rod to make casting and handling the rod and reel more truer and m or effieicnet. That goes for the wieght of the line too. If you're concerned aboput amount of line or strength, add a little more backing for lentght and go to a heavier leaders to the fly.
Q:
can I use a 4/5 SLV replacement spool on my Helios 4/5 reel. will it function properly?
Answer: They're both made by Okuma, but that doesn't mean they're interchangeable. My suggestion is to call Okuma to get the correct answer. 909-923-2828
Q:
What kind of warranty does Okuma offer for this fly reel?
Answer: A simple search ... https://www.okumafishingusa.com/assets/warranty%20documents/Okuma-Limited-Reel-Warranty.pdf
Q:
Is this reel for saltwater?? thanks.
Answer: I'm pretty sure this reel is magnesium, meaning it would not tolerate saltwater.
Answer: Yes, just wash off with fresh water after use and oil & grease. It looks like you are only buying the spare spool and not the reel.
Answer: I am un-sure, but since it is aluminum, I would think you could use for salt water. 7/8 is not a bad size depending on the size fish you are after.
Answer: Why not? Just rinse in freshwater after use.
Q:
Would the 4/5 reel hold 5wt double taper line and backing?
Answer: Yes. The 4/5 will hold 5wt. line and backing.
Answer: I don't own the 4/5 reel I have the 10/11 reel. The answer to your question is yes.
Answer: yes, just adjust the amount of backing.
Answer: Mr. Pierson has passed away
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes, it will.
Q:
Is this just a spool or the whole reel?
Answer: That is for the reel and spool
Answer: The picture appears to be the spool only, but I got the whole reel.
Answer: this listing is for the complete reel assembly.
Answer: This is a complete reel.
Answer: Whole reel.
Q:
I just bought the okuma crisium crf-45-86-2 and my rimfly reels dont fit. Which reel do you recommend? I fish for trout, bass, bluegill.
Answer: I use the 4/5 for trout and it is great. You could use it for bass but you would have to play them a while. I use a 2/3 on a 2 weight rod for bluegill.
Answer: The 4/5 is fine for most trout. I think it would be good for all panfish and bass up to 15 pounds.
Q:
What weight rod does it fit?
Answer: Best to go online and check on the Okuma website. Also there many other sites can will tell you.My best guess is that the reel is for a 4 or 5 weight rod
Answer: You can put it on almost any rod, they're kinda universal. It is a 4/5 wt reel, that's what its designed for. Sometimes I put it on my 6 wt rod, but mostly on a 4 weight.
Answer: Hi - I purchased this for a 3 weight rod that I built. It seems a nice fit.
Q:
Are these truly a large arbor reel? The pictures make it hard to tell. I live near the keys and would like to do some bone fishing.
Answer: It is truly a large arbor reel. I have used the 8 wt model for inshore fishing for two seasons and very happy with the reel. Have landed a 12 lb Striper and some nice speckled trout and reel has held up very nicely. Drag system works well. Would not hesitate to purchase another one.
Answer: it is definitely large arbor compared to some of the older reels where the arbor is as thick as a pencil, but there are much larger arbor reels than this one. I only do trout fishing and have never had a problem with it, but if it were me (with the little i know about bone fishing), I would look for something a little larger. Just my two cents.
Answer: I have the 7/8. I only caught one steelhead so far. It handled that. I suppose it would be fine for ocean fish. Maybe with a lot of extra backing.
Answer: If you're into bonefish I would be inclined to use the 10/11 slv okuma. I have this model and I love it
Answer: I have caught a lot on Bonefish on the 7/8, including a 10 pounder.
Answer: I loaded mine with 100 yds backing plus line
Q:
does this come with line on spool?
Answer: This does not. Most reels when sold individually don't come with line spooled up - a lot of combo's/kits will come with everything rigged up though.
Answer: No, will have to put on the backing and whatever line type you prefer.
Answer: No, it is just the reel however if you order it from one of the Amazon partners that is an outdoor shop they will probably load it with line and backing for an additional charge if you communicate with them prior to purchase.
Answer: nope - you load it.
Answer: no
Answer: NO.
Q:
Does anyone know how to change the left to right side retrieval ?
Answer: there is a sheet inside the reel box that gives you instructions on changing retrieval directions.
Q:
Hello my names JJ i got a okuma slv 45 fly spool for christmas and when i opened it i was disappointed to only find one half of the reel?
Answer: you just got the spare spool, not the whole reel. there are both listed here, hence different prices
Q:
Is the drag good enough for Alaskan Sockeye Salmon (10-12 lb fish) for the slv 8/9 reel?"
Answer: Yes These reels will be able to handle this range of fish
Answer: Yes, it's perfect
Q:
Which reel is best for a 3weight flyrod going for panfish and largemouth bass?
Answer: I use the SLV 5/6 for trout, steelhead, bass, walleye and pike. I believe you would be more satisfied with a smaller model for panfish and bass.
Answer: Okuma is a great choice for quality, value, lightweight with a smooth drag system.
Q:
Is it a fish stopping drag?
Answer: yes. it will tighten very strong. I haven't checked the "poundage" but it (the 7/8 weight model) has stopped or slowed multiple 15-25 lbs atlantic salmon. it will tighten to "lock down" which I don't recommend...your leader will snap before the drag fails. the drag has full adjustment with a soft clicking when the fish is taking line. you can easily adjust the drag during the fight.
Answer: Never had a fish on that would really test the drag
Answer: Yes, it has a fish-stopping drag. I have caught many trout using the reel in question (not as many as I would like to have. The drag works. It is smooth and I have no complaints.
Answer: Yes, it definitely is designed for stopping fish.
Answer: That depends on how much you tighten the drag on the reel. Personally I don't tighten mine much as the line friction on the guides has quiet a bit of drag, and if I need a little bit more I palm the reel spool. A drag that's too tight often leads to a broken tippett.
Answer: Yes, it has a strong drag.
Answer: most definitely, very strong too..
Q:
Does the 2/3 reel at $44.80 come with a spool? Or do you have to buy a spool to have a functioning reel?
Answer: Comes complete! Couldn't ask for a better all-around reel at a really fair price... -20 steelhead fishing 100+ laker fishing!
Answer: Take a look at the description of the reel. It should say there if it's a spool or complete reel. At that price and from what I researched I would assume is a full functioning reel.
Answer: You would be buying a very nice fully functioning reel. If you are just starting, consider buying a spare spool so you can carry a different weight or a different type of line.
Answer: It comes as you see it with a spool. It's ready to use after putting fly line on it.
Answer: Mine came with a spool. Great reel for the money!
Answer: It comes complete and ready to put your backing and fly line on it. Set up for left hand retreive out of the box.
Q:
Ok, stupid question, does the reel come with a spool? Spools listed are spares
Answer: Yes ...they are a complete ready to use reel...if you use floating line...then buy a spare reel for sinking line..or different line weight for a different rod etc.
Answer: If it says it is s reel then it has a spool. If it says extra spool then it is just the part that holds your line.
Q:
Is this listing for a complete "reel" or just a "spool"? The title says "reel" but the photo is a "spool". There are complaints of getting spool only
Answer: If you go down the page into the detail section it states spool many places. Sportsman’s warehouse has some complete reels on sale right now depending on size from $35-$40 I have the 5/6 size. Has landed 4lb trout no problem.
Answer: The listing shows for a complete reel. If you receive just the spool , make sure to contact Amazon and they will have the correct items shipped.
Answer: Well, the photo is just an extra spool for the reel so that is what I would say it is. I believe I purchased one of these because I wanted an extra spool.
Answer: Based on the price, it is exactly what I paid for an extra spool for my SLV Reel. The SLV complete reel retails between $50 - $65, at most places.
Answer: When I ordered, this was the reel and spool. I love the way it functions on my 3wt!
Answer: Product information says spool
Product reviews of Okuma SLV Diecast Aluminum Fly Reel
John S. : For the price point it can't be beat.
Awesome reel. For the price point it can't be beat. Yes, there are better reels out there but if you're looking to not break the bank, I'd recommend this.
Exercise2day : Has a good feel
I like the appearance on my rod. Perfect size and weight for me. It feels smooth and sturdy. Have not used it enough to evaluate its dependability.
Amazon Customer : How it preforms
This is a great reel, works great no mater what line I put on it.
VAFlyFisherman : Excellent Reel and nice drag system
Very happy with this reel. The drag system is easy to use and seems to be rather effective. I'll really put it to the test when I go Steelhead fishing in mid Oct. I put this reel on an Okuma Crisium Graphite rod and it works great. Looks pretty cool too. No complaints. So far I've caught Largemouth Bass with it. Looking forward to some Steelheads though.
R. Saldivar : Best Reel For the Money!
The Okuma SLV is a excellent reel. It is light, fluid, and versatile. The drag adjustment was a little odd and could use a bit more refining. The instructions for changing the reel to left-handed were simple and only took a few minutes. Some people prefer just to flip the reel around; I'm not one of them. If you're left-handed and want and great reel, search no further.
Hawkeye Pierce : Great little reel for a great price.
I have many fancier (more expensive) reels, but none that I like better than this one. Well, at least not a lot better. This is a great value for a light weight fly reel. Very smooth drag, the arbor is the perfect size, nice finish.
Kane : Easily Damaged
Used this reel for two days salmon fishing. On the first day, the reel slipped from 2 feet off the ground and was terribly dented. It had to be bent back to almost its original form to be used. Will be returning.
Chuck J : Surprised!
Bought expecting it to work for a one-time trip to the salt flats. Quite surprised about the quality of the build, and it lasted the whole trip. I had reservations about using it in saltwater, but it seems to have survived fine. I rinsed it each night with frewsh water and made sure to keep it out of the sand. Didn't have any major reel-burners on, so that may be the defining matter, but for some small Trevalley it worked awesome.
I hope you found this review to be helpful, please click below to indicate that you did. Thanks
stan wojciechowski : Very nice real, handles nicely
Very nice real, handles nicely. I put it on a 5-6 Eagle claw n it handls nicely with #6 fly line.
Lawson in new orleans : A+
I bought the 5/6 for a 5/6 TFO rod I picked up which has WF5F Airflo line on it (yeah yeah, the line costs more than the reel). I use the setup as an all-round - it does mostly fresh water, with some inshore mixed in. I bought this because I needed something with more/better drag. I like that it does not 'click' while retrieving, only when something takes line.
Drag - It's surprisingly smooth and reasonably easy to adjust 'on the fly' if you catch something and get it on the reel (this is mostly relevant to inshore). I don't think it's waterproof, more like water resistant, but I fish almost exclusively from a boat, so that is not important to me.
Build quality - Nothing bad to say. For a $55 reel it's fine - I'd say it's better than I expected.
Value - I looked at a number of reels in this range ($40-$80) and put my hands on them. I'd say for the money this is a great reel. No, I don't think it's as good as a $200+ reel (comparing side by side), but I don't think your in the market for that looking at $50 reels. If you have a rod in the $100-$200 range, I think this is the perfect match for it. Well, this and some high quality fly line!
Brad Towle : This reel is a super deal!
Very smooth reeling action, smooth drag action, easy clean up. Was bigger than expected but unfortunately I did not hook into any big fish (tarpoon, bonefish) to listen to it screem! Will have to try it on steelhead and stripers soon. Very impressed, esp. with the price!
Amazon Customer : How it preforms
This is a great reel, works great no mater what line I put on it.
Brian Savoy : Great reel.
Just got my new fly reel today. Very good quality for money. I plan on buying some extra spools for my other lines. The drag is very smooth and something you would find on higher dollar reels. I bought a 5/6 wt and fish mostly for trout. I would recommend if your in the market for a new ree/
Scott Mazza : Very Satisfied
For the price, the reel is exceptional. I have caught nearly every inshore species in Florida with this 8 wt reel and performs very well. My favorite feature is the round dial for the drag, as compared to other reels who typically use a star or similar knob design (easier to adjust for me). My only opposition is the composition of the reel, but you get what you pay for. Being cast aluminum it is very light, and will not rust, but is also prone to breaking and bending as opposed to other more expensive reels.
Frank H : I believe the SLV may be about the best bargain on the fly reel market
I've used these reels exclusively for winter steelhead fishing whether swinging streamers or drifting nymphs for about 5 years (I currently own 3 of them). I believe the SLV may be about the best bargain on the fly reel market. Definitely affordable and the reels seem to perform well to date. I've hauled in some nice steelhead with them, even in freezing temps (as long as I keep the reel dry).
Cindee Veenstra : I did good!
Scored major points from my husband for this one!
Chris : not so good
Gets wet and locks up. Replaced with a sealed drag reel after one use....
MR C M Montanez : fantastic reel
very nice reel, practically no noise, good drag, good size and well made. good value for money
BCHvogel : Excellent drag system
I am a huge Okuma fan. I got this spare spool to go with my 10/11 wt Okuma SLV reel. I used both at the Cape Lookout Albacore Festival. It held its own against the fasted Albacore on multiple runs of 200 yards and more. Excellent drag system.

Amazon Customer : excellent reel for the money
I own three of these in various sizes and they work great. Nice is that extra spools are available online cheap, makes managing multiple lines easy without breaking the bank. Amazon is also 20 dollars cheaper then various sports outfitters.
Dthatch : Great gift
This reel was a gift for my grandson who is learning to fly fish. A great reel for the price and the kid has landed a few trout already. He loves the reel.
Allen D. : nice reel
I'm not a fly fishing expert, but this seems to be a really well made, nice looking reel for the price. I haven't caught anything big enough to worry about the drag yet, but for the price I'd buy this reel again.
KKapp : Best value you'll find
I've used this reel for a few years now and it's fantastic! It was recommended by a friend who is a fishing fanatic and he put it through some severe use. After using it myself, I've got to say that I've never seen anything in this price range perform so well. After many outings hauling in some pretty good sized trout this reel is still as smooth as the day I bought it. Drag is easy to adjust with the large knob and switching reel spools is quick and easy. It is an aluminum reel though, and as such can be bent if dropped or abused, but that's no different than any other aluminum reel. I doubt you could find another reel with this quality until you spend twice as much... so why would you?
Scott Mazza : Very Satisfied
For the price, the reel is exceptional. I have caught nearly every inshore species in Florida with this 8 wt reel and performs very well. My favorite feature is the round dial for the drag, as compared to other reels who typically use a star or similar knob design (easier to adjust for me). My only opposition is the composition of the reel, but you get what you pay for. Being cast aluminum it is very light, and will not rust, but is also prone to breaking and bending as opposed to other more expensive reels.
Fernthephillyfisherman : Does the job but not that durable
Bought it for the price. It did it’s job until I dropped it one day and a bit chipped off which would grab the line while I spooled up. Good value but not very durable.
Cindee Veenstra : I did good!
Scored major points from my husband for this one!
Tomas Stundzia : Fell apart first time fishing
Reel fell apart first use fishing for salmon. Screws that hold reel seat to the frame ripped right off the thread. Very unhappy.
Dthatch : Great gift

Doug : Five stars.
My wife had lost her fly reel, and we needed to get one for her asap. We were leaving for our annual camping/fly fishing trip in Idaho. These guys were quick and we got it...and she loves it! She has more expensive reels (and of course she found the one she lost, but she kept using the Okuma. It was reliable and the drag was very smooth. Good product.
kzoo1 : Solid Reel
Solid reel for the money. Although I'm not entirely sold on the over-sized reels, I guess I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to reel size. Don't get me wrong, it is a quality light weight reel, with a great drag system and a silent retrieve. I honestly believe you can't find a reel with these features for a better price. Time will tell how it holds up with regular (ab)use.
Robert : Beware - Listing is inaccurate
After considerable research, I selected this fly reel as my choice to upgrade my equipment. Unfortunately, the listing is confusing so I asked for clarification if I would receive a complete "Fly Reel" or just the "Spool". The Manufacturer assured me it would be the complete reel. However, after 2 separate orders, it's apparent that they are currently only shiping the "Spool". Very dissapointing.
I believe it is a fine fly reel but my 1 Star Ratings are all I could do since I never received a useful product. I even reached out to Amazon Support after the first shipment and they encouraged me to try again.
Amazon Customer : drag feels pretty nice, but the metal is soft and dents ...
it seems decent. fills how you would expect, drag feels pretty nice, but the metal is soft and dents easy if you set it down to hard. i'd rather have a cabellas prestige plus fly reel, if im honest.
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
works great
BG : Good value forna solid reel.
Good basic trout reel. Lightweight. Well made. Good value.
Perchy : Love it!!
Nicely built quality reel. I bought the # 7/8 which holds 100 yards of 20LB braid backing and a # 8 WF line.
franzelli : Great reel
I bought this reel a couple months ago and have been quite impressed with the overall construction, quality and performance. I've caught dozens of fish on it from 6-inchers to 5 pounders and it's been consistently solid. For the price, I don't think it gets much better...nice job Okuma.

Russell : Great Reel Great Drag
I can definitly recommend this reel. It only makes me wonder why I ever spent two to three times as much for a reel in the past. I have caught a lot fish with this reel in different model sizes over the last three years and have nothing but praise
for a well made dependable reel like the SLV. You should buy one, end of story.

A. kulha : Best buy for the money.
I got my 8-9 weight reel and it comfortably fits my 8 weight line with 150 yards of 50 lb power pro backing.
Very smooth and quiet retrieve with more than enough drag for everything but the biggest saltwater fish. Looks amazing against the red power pro backing.
Matt Arhontas : Can't be beat for the price
This is a great reel, can't beat it for the price. This is my second Okama SLV, I bought this 7/8 for bass and steelhead after a great experience with a 4/5 I bought last year.
Drag is super smooth and really easy to adjust if you need to ease up or put the brakes on a big fish. Large arbor holds plenty of line and backing for hard charging steelhead.
Devon H. : Love This Reel!
First off, I ordered the SLV 8/9 just in case someone is thinking of picking this up. Amazon and reviewers don't always specify the model of items they buy so this is just to avoid confusion. As a disclaimer I'll also say I haven't had the chance to use this reel yet but I am very much looking forward to it. It feels and looks very high quality. The reel itself is also fairly light. I was able to easily fit 100 yards of 30lb dacron backing and 80ft of fly line on the reel. I considered putting more backing on it but I'm not entirely sure that will be necessary since I will be using this to target freshwater species like largemouth, smallmouth, and muskie if I get lucky. After loading the reel up I put it on my 8wt to see how it felt since this is a large arbor reel and my previous reel for my 8wt was not. The larger size and slightly heavier weight of this reel doesn't seem to bother me. Time will tell when I'm on the water chucking huge streamers for 6 hours but we'll see. This reel definitely sits in the upper mid-range level of reels in terms of quality and the price is amazing. Time will tell how it holds up and if I have any major issues I will definitely come back and update my review, but for now I love it!

Amazon Customer : How it preforms
This is a great reel, works great no mater what line I put on it.
Zia : Very pleased
For son. Very pleased with this reel. New fly rod and needed New reel. Old one kept sticking. He loves it.
Amazon Customer : Pretty good deal
I put this on a vintage glass 7wt rod. Spooled it with rio 7wt and caught a medium sized steelhead that weekend. The drag was only slightly pulled by the fish but I could tell it would handle if the fish took off. Pretty good deal. I'm a novice fisherman. I hope to catch mor with this setup. Will be good for bass and carp I think Remember the fish done care what rod and reel you have hahahaha.
