Since I'm a tinker-er, I've decided I'm going to start building my own spinnerbaits. I've got everything picked out from LurePartsOnline that I want, but I wanted to ask you guys if there were any tools, parts, etc. that you would highly recommend that a beginner must have to start out. Thanks.
Are you pouring you're own heads onto a prefab frame, bending a frame or buying pre-made and adding skirts and blades?
No mater what and I'm sure you know this, use good swivels for your rear blade.

I'm not pouring anything (yet). Just buying some prefab'd jig's with the wire already attached. So I'll be adding all the hardware to make them pretty.
Yeah, I was surprised at the cost of the swivels. They're around $8 for a ten pack it seems for good ones.

For bending the loops at the end of the wire.

For the swivel split rings. These are also a must when changing out crankbait hooks.
Use hollow 1/8" beads, anything solid or bigger just adds weight to the arm.

@Munkin those pliers look pretty nifty. I'll definitely buy a pair of them.

You need to buy in bulk to get costs down which is why it is hard for small tackle makers to compete.

With the split ring pliers make sure you get the Xuron!! The reason is you'll be using size #2 - #2.5 split rings and those economy ones don't work well with any ring smaller than a #3. Remember to pay attention to the wire diameter on the spinnerbait heads as that will dictate the size clevis you are going to use. If you wire is under .030" diameter you'll use a size #1 clevis, a size #2 clevis will work from .030" up to .032" and a size #3 clevis will work from .035" on up. A size #2 clevis has a hole diameter of .035" but you need the hole to be a little larger than the wire diameter in order for it to spin free. So if you have .035" wire you will want the size #3 clevis because the #2 clevis will be too tight. Just some food for thought.
Post the heads you are buying and what you are trying to make. We will then be able to tell you if you are getting the correct size parts.

I have a good pair of Shimano split ring pliers that have worked well for me putting #1 and #2 split rings on my crankbaits, so they should work well for spinnerbaits as well.
Thanks for the info on the clevises. That was one thing that I unsure about. It seems like most of the heads have a .032 or .035 wire on them these days, so I'll likely need to have both #2 and #3 clevises on hand.
Well, I sunk $250 into spinnerbait parts yesterday at LurePartsOnline and $50 into skirt material/tools at Janns. Let the rabbit hole begin.

I've never been one to half ass anything. I can't wait for everything to arrive and try some things out. I'm sure I'll be seeking you guys out for more help soon.
Money goes so quick when you start putting spinnerbait supplies into the cart.

That it does. I got everything in last night and flipped through everything I got. I've already got $100 more in my cart of things that I want to try on top of this stuff.

Don't you know it! It is like I am going to save money by making my own the next thing you know you are ordering $300 worth of parts. I wouldn't have it any other way though as I know what I want and what works.

Spinnerbaits is one that I knew I wasn't going to save money making, but I can make ones that I can't go to the store and buy (although the new Covert spinnerbaits from Booyah aren't too far off).

Besides the SK Midnight special I do not buy any commercial baits unless someone wants me to make one. I am at a point where I can talk to someone on the phone a create a spinnerbait that will work for them 95% of the time. Too many people get caught up in the hype of ICAST or what some pro said. In my area the same 4 baits have produced for at least a decade and still continue to work.

Here's a few of my first few baits I built.
I love these black nickle blades.
This bluegill color is exactly what I have been looking for in a skirt. I'm really proud of this one.
Goby and bluegill skirts side by side.
It took me 3-4 baits to finally perfect how to make this loop perfectly, but I think I've got it figured out now.
A quick observation, the first two spinnerbaits I would consider the swivel on backwards. It really isn't on backwards but the bulk of the rotational mass of the swivel is against the blade. It maybe splitting hairs but the swivel will spin more freely if reversed.

Yes, and there is an easy way to make sure the blade goes on the right end of the swivel. Simply hold the swivel and see which end spins and which end does not, the end that spins is where you attach the blade. The blade will spin if you have it reversed but not as easy, and just so you know this is a mistake a lot of people make when they first start building a spinnerbait.

Thanks for the advice! I didn't know if there was a correct way or if it didn't matter. I appreciate the advice.
I didnt know here was a correct way to put the wives on either . Now I'm going to have to go correct my mistakes . Thanks a lot .????

Roller, crane, and barrel swivels spin on each end so there any difference on which end you use. Ball bearing swivels are different as they only spin on one end but they spin so free that most anglers never take notice. When your blade is on the free end of the swivel it will spin even better and when using a Worth or Sampo swivel it will be ridiculous at how slow you can reel the bait the keep the blade spinning.
I checked all my baits and only had one on backwards .
You should try a double Indiana blade on some of your baits. No one makes that combination that I am aware of and it just kills fish around here. I use a #3 silver and a #5 gold Indiana blade on a white head with a pre-made sexy shad skirt and it has been my top producer on the river so far this year.

I don't think I have any Indiana's bigger than a 4. Guess I'll need to order more stuff...
