A Few Jigs.... 2024

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

I really enjoy making jigs. I find it not only relaxing, but very rewarding. I'm starting to paint my own crankbaits, but I've got a lot to learn. Jigs are the only baits I can make that I feel are better than what I can purchase from a manufacturer. I hope to say that about my custom cranks one day, but I can't right now. Jigs are very easy to make, and I really enjoy brainstorming the different color combinations and layering the skirts just right. If someone reading this is thinking of making jigs....don't hesitate! Seriously...it really provides instant gratification and the startup costs are very low. I buy all my skirt layers from fishingskirts.com, and if anyone happens to want to duplicate a color I post....just PM me and I'll give you the formula. I'll generally make 10 of the same color, and decide what combos I am going to make before ordering. FYI all my regular jigs and footballs are 80 strands, and my finesse jigs and footballs are 40-50 strands. I use minature zip ties to secure my skirts, which keep the skirt strands in place where I organized them, and prevents the skirt from ever slipping down. As I've said before; I don't pour my own heads. I use All Terrain Tackle footballs, Picasso footballs, and I've used a few Outkast footballs. All Terrain's have a nice and hard finish, but the Picasso heads are airbrushed with a craw pattern, and they use gammy hooks. They are on sale right now at Cabelas.  I recently bought a bunch of Cabelas house brand footballs, which use a Mustad hook, but a shotty weedguard.  Anyway...here are some jigs....

Nice job on those jigs! I have never seen zip ties used to hold the skirt on, how do they hold up?

They seem to hold up well.  I've been fishing with jigs made this way for about 4 months now, and no signs of wear or slippage.

fishing user avatarmattm reply :

Very nice!  I love how most are predominatly green or have green in them.

One question though.  In the past when I have cut zip ties they are very sharp or pointy on the end.  I've cut myself numerous times not being careful around cut zip ties.  Do you do anything to dull the ends?

fishing user avatarptomacbass reply :

jig makings addicting isnt it natural.  especially once you get a fish on a home made jig.  I just started making my own last week.

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

Natural, those jigs are stupid awesome!

Are the skirts extra thick because you have larger crawfish in your area, or are you trying to achieve a slower fall?

fishing user avatarslomoe reply :

Great lookin jigs man.

Nice observation; a thicker skirt will indeed result in a slower fall.  It affects the full skirt jigs more than the finesse jigs, but does affect both.  I just adjust the weight accordingly.  My intent was not to adjust the fall rate; I'm just trying to make the jig more attractive.  I didn't have a set number of strands I wanted to put on each jig when I started making them, I just added layers until the jig looked nice and filled out.  I think a lot of other jigs look 'thin'.

fishing user avatarflippincrazy reply :

those are nice, but the green pumpkin with blue are sweet looking

fishing user avatarIDbasser reply :

Those look really nice. I have been debating whether to make or jigs or not. I have been looking on Jannsnetcraft.com at supplies. I wasn't sure about their skirts, so I will checkout your supplier. Thanks for post.

EDIT:  I just looked at the web site you get your skirts from.  It says they come in 10's.  How many does it take to do one of your jigs?

fishing user avatarPitchinkid reply :

Sweet lookin jigs my man.

fishing user avatarHB reply :

I've seen lots of jigs with "fuzzy" necks.  Do you think it catches more fish than the standard style?

fishing user avatarRiver Rat316 reply :

fishingskirts.com... Charles is a great guy and by far the best prices on skirt material

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

I'm going to try and shoot a short video on how I make them with the zip ties without using a normal skirt band first. This is the benefit of the zip ties. Wire tying provides a little 'cleaner' look; but you have to put the traditional rubber skirt band on first, and then tie the wire on. It's quite a bit more time consuming, and I saw no benefit over my zip ties. I've gotten to where I can trim the 'tag end' of the zip tie flush with the zip ties 'stopper'. I'll just have to show you. It isn't difficult at all...you'll be spitting out jig after jig in no time. It's been a couple of months since I made those, but I'll grab my jig box if you want to know what the mix of a certain jig is. I'm not a jig salesman, but I did sell some extras on the Texas Fishing Forum. This guy bought the jigs identical to the green pumpkin blue jigs in my pics, only I used a dark red highlight which matches the crawfish of this area. He sent me a PM recently....

"Hey, wanted to let you know, I fish the friday night tourney every friday on Lake Lewisville and tonight we won and had big bass (5.25lbs) which came on the jig I got from you..Thanks!!!!

Just thought you might want to hear this..."

It made me feel good, but I only make them for myself. If you plan on selling jigs, you need to pour your own heads or the profit margin isn't worth it. Also; I generally use 4 layers on my 'full' skirted jigs, and finesse jigs, which equates to 80 strands (full) and 40 (finesse).
