What lure cuaght your first smallmouth of the year? And how big was it?
Mine was 3.5lbs on a heddon super spook jr.
Keitech easy shiner 3.5" in smallmouth magic color. Rigged in a 1/4oz jig head. I was bed fishing.
Pumpkinseed Berkley power grub rigged on a 1/8oz jighead.
It wasn't huge But it was my first smallmouth, not just of the year, but ever.
First ever and the year. 2.25lbs on a SK bitsy tube in watermelon chartreuse.
1/8oz mushroom head with a chopped up senko
1/2 oz spinnerbait White & Firetiger.

It's hard to catch them when they are not there.
Custom painted 110 (by Doc Drew), not sure what it weighed.
First smallie of the year was caught on an 1/8 ounce ball head jig with a 3" Berkley Powerbait Rippleshad. About 12" long.
My first smallie ever was on a perch xrap 08 on the Big Rideau. Still my go to lure when nothing else is working.
This years first was on a watermelon tube & 3/8 tube jig on Lake St Clair. Tubes work all day long up here.
Spinnerbait.
Still looking for my first this year. So far it's been all green fish.
Blue smoke Gizit tube on a 1/8 tube head. 2lbs flat.
Gitzit brown craw salt and pepper.
Strike king 1.5 sexy shad.
Caught my first SM of the year today! Probably a pound and a half. It was my first ever sight fish and it was the first fish I caught on a jig I tied myself. 3/8 oz. arkie in a brown craw w/ a SK Baby rage crawl in Alabama Craw on the back. Pretty special fish even if it wasn't very big.
Haven't fished for smallies this year yet, but last year a 3/8 ounce cavitron black skirted buzzbait caught my first smallie of the year, a 13" 1.25 pounder. A 1/4 ounce buzzbait of the same color and make caught my biggest smallie of the year at just over 4 pounds.
First smallie of the year was a small one. I caught it in a small stream while dragging a Strike King Bitsy tube back in January.
Here it was:

It was 5in Green Pumpkin Senko for me. I just wish I could catch more of these fish. They seem either hard for me to catch or hard for me to find.
War Eagle Gold Series Spinnerbait. about a 3 pounder
Albino fluke on a Swarming hornet head spin
Caught mine pulling a lindy rig or spinner harness and crawlertrolling for walleye. Guessing it was a hair over 3lbs
Flyfishing with a full sink line and "Scotty's McFly" streamer. Fish was about 2.5 pounds.
God Bless,
Don

Wow great smallie to start the year!
I catch my first smallies every year on a 2" paddle tail on a 1/4oz football head jig.
And, on the few I have left, I bought 300 after yum decided not to make the 3" yum dingers.
A 3" yum dinger rigged weightless, baby bass color, on a wide gap hook, it's a killer.
Wish Yum would bring the 3" yum dingers back, best Small mouth bait I've
ever used.
1/4 oz. Jig with zoom salty chunk trailer
Livingston EBS technology with sounds. Caught smallies, rock bass, white bass, walleye, and a pike on Lake St. Clair- Michigan this past Saturday. Versatile lure. 9 fow. 68 degree water. Overcast - 70 degrees.

homemade 1/2oz tailspinner
Probably my first one was on a nightcralwer. I think it was around 1 to 2 pounds.
Dragged a 5 inch watermelon candy senko at Table Rock Lake in MO. Smallies love this color. Popped up a 4 lb on my first cast of the season.
3rd cast with a KVD 1.5 in sexy shad...never used a squarebill for smallies before and was delighted to see they're just as effective as they are for largemouth.
Zoom Ultravibe Speed Craw.
Don't know size (I seldom measure or weigh), but call it 15"- 16". It was on a orange Yamamato Hula grub on a 5/16 oz. stand up jig head.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that they were bringing back the 3" Dinger....can't remember where I read that though.
About ~8 years ago I stocked up on 3" Senkos after landing my PB largemouth on one. If that size Senko is discontinued I'll be heartbroken.

Get the 3'' yama senko, even though it`s more $$$ it`s worth it for better quality and color selection.

Hi Hank, I have used the senko's, yes they work great, but no way do they hold up as well as the yum dingers
do.
I can catch way more Bass on one Yum dinger before it falls apart, the senko sometimes is falls apart on the first fish.
But they do work, I'll give them that much.
Black and white Hula Popper 17" 2lbs. To me it is Orca!

I always make sure I have a couple Rebel wee Craws with me, especially when stream fishing for Smallies. They seem to love them and Marabou jigs.

Plum Drop-Shot worm from a "Chompers", a very angry 3.5 lb smallmouth
Caught a bunch in February through the ice, but that's probably not the spirit of this thread...Rapala HJ 10 on 6lb Seaguar fluorocarbon, there was still a little ice on the north end of the pond where the sun didn't hit yet.
Either a Kvd 1.5 square bill in orange craw or a black/blue jig with chigger craw trailer. Both have be producing since then as well! Let's hit em hard until da snow flies! Tight lines.

Texas rigged with 3/16 weight
My fist smallie of the year and of my life was caught on a booyah blade spinnerbait 1/2 ounce in chatruce
