I just saw those posted on the Facebook. First, regardless of whether this fish is 25" and 9lbs or not, so long as the dude in the pic isn't a midget, this fish is an absolute tank and it's great to see it released. It supposedly came from the Allegheny and surprisingly not Erie or the Susquehanna. Huge congrats!

Yeah, I don't know what to make of just a picture, either. It's definitely a huge smallmouth, and if that guy is at least a normal sized guy, 25" is definitely in the realm of possibility. Whether that's 9lbs... I don't know. It has decent girth, but man, any 9lb smallmouth I've ever seen has looked like a basketball about to explode.

This is at least the second time this year someone catches a 9 pound smallmouth bass and many people question it. Is it really 25 inches and does he have a length measuring picture to prove it? I wonder if the scales these guys use are bad and why they do not take pictures of the length and girth of the smallmouth bass? I know a guy down here that makes similar claims and told me he caught a +10 pound bass yet it only measures 23 inches with a girth under 18 inches..it is safe to say he and others like him need a new scale!

For this one, they estimated based off a photograph. I can't say whether it's 3 lbs. or 6 lbs., but it isn't 9 lbs. I've heard so many shore anglers talk about "ten pounders" they caught. Happens at nearly every spot I frequent. One time I hear a guy on his phone screaming he caught a ten pounder. The fish is on a rope. When he gets off the phone, he starts bragging to anyone that passes. I told him nice bass, but it's not 10. He's like, it has to be. Pull out my scale, and it's barely over three. Told him it's a great fish for the spot. Probably ruined his summer. Showed him the picture below, and asked him how big he thought it was. He said that has to be a ten pounder. The scale was waffling at the 5 lb. mark.

Yeah, I'm calling BS. That fish is likely a healthy 5, but certainly no 9. And out of the Alleghany River too, HA!!!
This fish below was 23" and only a measly 3-6 (post spawn). Poor girl barely fought, she must have just finished spawning. I'm guessing this fish at a healthy state would be in the 6lb range.

If you are even going to mention a record you better have at least something to back it up. Anything other than a picture. I could put up a lot of pictures of 6lb smallies that look like they could eat that one for lunch. If nothing else, take a picture of it laying next to your rod so that you can measure it later or better yet, sacrifice some fishing line and cut 2 pieces one to the length and one to the girth. Then you can at least get accurate measurements if not actual weight. Just for reference, here is a 4 almost 5. Pictures can be deceiving.

First of all no one caught a 9lb smallmouth. The fish was never weighed. You can estimate all day long but the scale tells the true story.

I use to think the scale tells the final answer but I am starting to doubt it for some catches. There is a guy that fishes the same body of water I do and he is always bragging to me about the +10 pound or better bass he catches. Last one he showed me was barely 23 inches in length with a girth under 18 inches. He has a picture with the bass being weighed and the scale does indeed say +10 pounds..sorry but I am not buying it. The smallest double digit bass I caught was over 25 inches in length and it was a very thick and muscular bass. Have caught bass over 27 inches in length and some barely weighed 9 pounds. That is why I dont take bass weighed on scales too seriously anymore and take length,girth, and weighed on scales pictures more seriously when it comes to a bass that weighs over 8 pounds.

A quick photo analysis suggests the fish is right around the 25" mark as stated, and New York DEC charts would put the weight at just over 7.5 lbs (for regional comparison), though several others, including In-Fish suggest 9 lbs. This is likely why the 9lb. suggested weight in the story.
I personally don't see enough signs in the pic of the fish being overly fat and robust, instead more long, so I would lean toward the NY scale or lighter.
That said, I, too, tire of these near record stories, and wish the persons would either be prepared and have some defined metrics captured, length/girth or weight, or simply keep the fish and get them correctly certified if truly record class.

Isn't it odd that so many people catch these state record or world record fish but they document it terribly and let the fish go? I am sorry but if I catch a state record bass I am going to try to keep it alive and call the DNR as soon as possible for official documentation. I understand that some people do catch some records for lesser known species and not report it but not for well known fish like largemouth and smallmouth bass.

I mean I agree with you but I feel like far too often it is a "Fish Story" that keeps going further and further until it is a state record, I think most people know it isn't so they release it and then say "oh I didn't realize I caught a state record..."

I'd say close to a 7lb'er, because of it's length. Does not have that "PIG" girth though. I've caught hundreds and hundreds of smallies over 5 lbs, and multiple dozens over 6, with several over 7, all from Lake Erie over the last 30 years, and that's not 9 lb'er.

Funny you bring this up. I was browsing the app fish brain catches for muskies and there was this fool also on the Alleghany that was boasting about his state record catch. Must be something in that water that makes anglers there delusional.
makes them look foolish to me for boasting about stuff like records with nothing to show other than that. It ruins their catch in my eyes.
This guy guy claims that muskie is 70 lbs! Quick call the press!!!

The photo of this Smallmouth is good and the anglers hand holding the fish can be used to estimate the length. If the anglers fingers measure 4.5" spread, the bass is near 5 hands long or 24". Using LXLXG/1200, where the girth is 75% of the length or 18", this bass weighs approximately 8.6 lbs. or 70% girth @ 17" = 8.2 lbs. without knowing the length all anyone can do is estimate.

There is only the picture to analyze at the top of this thread.
1. measure your own hand spread out like the photo, should near 4.5".
2. Measure the hand in the photo,then measure the bass from upper lip to end of tail.
3. Divide the measure hand photo length into the measure fish length, should be close to 5. 5 X your measure hand length = length of fish in photo.

Why are you guys so eager to trash a nice Fish? He never said it was the state record. He took a pic and let her go. then showed the pic later to a F & G guy and HE said it was close to 9 lbs. The angler didn't know what he caught, only that was a big one. If he knew, I'm sure that he would have weighed it IF he had scale. You PA guys should thank him because she's swimming free for the next guy. Plus she's gonna make lots of babies! For you nay sayer's, that fish is slob and is definitely near 24" or 25". WRB's #'s are correct. That fish is 5 hands long. Do the math. Is it a state record? We will never know. Catching a potential record and letting it go isn't unheard of. I know a local angler here that once caught a potential state record. 7+lbs on his scale. He caught it on a Weds. in the middle of nowhere. He didn't have access to a certified scale so he let her go. Some of you guys may call BS on that but it's true story. To back it up, he went out and caught a bigger one! That one is certified as the new MT state record. Congrat's to the angler!
