Best Smallmouth fishin in the USA 2024

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

I love smallies. Where is your favorite lake or stream for smallies both in numbers and in size? I don't have many in my nieghborhood of SE Iowa and am envious of those of you that live amongst them. Don't worry about me taking your favorite place as I am, as I am sure most of you are, strictly a catch photo and release guy. I just want to catch that 6 pound smallie so I can get a nice replica made after I get his photo and let him loose so you can catch him when he is 7 pounds. ;D

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

Lake Erie is where you want to go catch them at....if you find a good hole...average 4lbs....but I like Muskegon Lake, only cause I have a honey hole I can catch them all the time... ;D

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

4 lb average? I spend a week on the Great Lakes every summer and the fishing is really good, we've had days where we have caught fifty smallmouth- a piece! However, I have NEVER caught a single fish that weighed 4 lbs.

We don't catch the numbers here in the Mid South, but if you want to go after a hawg, this is where they live. I don't recommend the summer. The VERY best fishing is NOW through late March and then again, September through November. Got out last Saturday and caught seventeen but only one over 5 lbs. Total for the year ('05) is sixty-eight smallmouth, eleven over 5 lbs including two just over 8 lbs.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Just point me the right direction. That sounds like some great fishin Roadwarrior. Can you possibly email me and let me know particulars. By the way, I fished Erie one time for smallies and it was fun but was on a charter and the captain was more interested in seeing how fast we could get our limit and get back in than quality fishing.

fishing user avatarCoalCracker reply :

The Susquehana and Juniata rivers in pennsylvania can't be beat!!!!!!!

fishing user avatarpyrannah reply :

I just signed up for this site and seems like there is a ton of info here.  Can't wait to get through it all.

I am from PA and do a lot of fishing in the susquehanna and it is really the only fishing I know.  There are certain areas you can go and catch fish all do long.  The best is wading in warm waters discharge from power plants.  As for lunkers I have never seen any but I know they are there!!

I would love to fish erie sometime can you guys post more info on where to go and such?

Thanks a lot!!!

fishing user avatarmichaelnous reply :

I agree with Roadwarrior. I live 10 minutes south of Chicago and drive down to Arkansas every year for their smallmouth and trout fishing. You can definately get 4 pounders out of Bullshoals, Norfork and the White river. Midsouth definately has some great places for Smallmouth. Hopefully I will have a picture to post after my trip in April

fishing user avatarmcorr reply :

In my area there is only one place, Dale Hollow.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Well mcorr, Dale Hollow being home to the current world record, who can argue with that? I suspect you fish Percy Priest, Center Hill and the Cumberland River, too. I'm in Germantown and haven't made it over to your neck of the woods, yet.

When do you think is the best time to hunt that 12 lb smallmouth I'm looking for?

fishing user avatarBig_Bass_Rich reply :

I agree with Lake Erie, although I'm partial since I live on it!  ;D

If you find the right spots, a 4lb average is not tough to come by. In the fall we can raise that to a 5-6lb average... just gotta know the right areas.

fishing user avatarNick_Barr reply :

I have heard that Dale hollow in Tenn. and lake champlain are good.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Big_Bass_Rich, this is just for fun, I'm not calling anyone out. My best day EVER was a few weeks ago and if I assign 4 lbs to our 10 under 5s and round up to 6 lbs for our seven over 5, the math is 82/17 = 4.82.  I can probably talk myself into stretching it to a 5 lb average, but here in the land of monsters, that's a big day.

fishing user avatarBig_Bass_Rich reply :

My best day ever was last fall when we never got a single smallie under 5lbs the entire day. We weighed them all with a Normark scale and we ended up getting 12 or so between 2 of us, biggest being 6.2lbs. We're talking late late fall with huge jigging spoons. Almost too cold to keep the rod in my hand without dropping it lol. Lots of huge fish out there but it's all in the spot you choose. You can't go out to a big hump where everybody fishes but rather smaller humps near the big one, or spots that look like nothing. Half the time we'll find some sparse weeds in the middle of nowhere, mark it on GPS and fish it for a while and find a whole bunch of big smallies there. If we fish the main shoals that everyone else fishes a limit of 3lbers is pretty good.

The thing is finding these secondary spots is kind of an unreliable way to fish and I wouldn't exactly count on them producing on tournament day. These are "here today, gone tomorrow" type areas but if you get onto them you can get a 4-5lb average no problem.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

WOW!  I need to book a trip with you.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Wow and Wow again, I need to book a trip with Roadwarrior and a trip with Big_Bass_Rich. Just let me know when I can come.

fishing user avatarBig_Bass_Rich reply :

Bass season opens up here June 25th, best fishing for big smallies is September - November  ;D ;D

fishing user avatarNick.Culver reply :

Don't forget Washington! Every where you turn theirs some kind of good smallie fishing. Lots of great numbers lakes. Good amount of big fish lakes. THe columbia river has put out some big bags in tournaments.

fishing user avatarbronzeback_NW reply :

I'm just following you every where tonight Nick.

Yes the columbia is an untouched resource for BIG small mouth. I saw bags from my club derbys last fall that went 22.00-25.00lb. now those are GREAT bags no matter what kinda fish your after. I will be going out starting March 20th or so for big SMALLIES at the mouth of the Yakima River pouring into the Columbia. I know of one fish caught by a client of a friend of mine that went 7lb12oz. And that was right in town. Some day I will make it to Dale Hollow. Was at a seminar with Mr.Yelas last winter and he said that he thought that the smallmouth on the Snake and Columbia was 2nd only to Lake Erie. I tend to beleive Mr. Yelas when he says that.......Jim

fishing user avatarPhishn_Phool reply :

Sorry, but I guided for 25 years for smallies and I'm afraid I don't believe you can catch 12 smallmouth bass any place anytime that will average 6lbs

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Well Phishn_Phool, here's a story for you. I have been fishing with a guy now for almost four years. He's a great fisherman and a good man. In November of '03 he caught a 10 lb smallmouth which I netted and weighed. So, that's the lead in, but here's the story:

Every time we go smallmouth fishing on the Tennessee River, we start out anchored on the downstream mouth of a little creek. We waste thirty minutes to an hour at a spot where I have NEVER gotton a bite. The reason we ALWAYS start here is becase my buddy caught seven fish over a two hour period with a total weight of just over 45 lbs! Now this was several years before I started fishing with this fellow. I now know him very well and I believe this story, if you knew him I think you would, too.

That's not twelve averaging 6 lbs, but it's seven with a 6.428 average weight. When I had my biggest day ever, last month, I was reminded several times that it was NOT his biggest day.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

;DI am still waiting on my invitation Roadwarrior ::)

fishing user avatarPhishn_Phool reply :

the key is "several years ago"

fishing user avatarL.D. reply :

We have pretty good fishing here on the North Branch of the Susquehanna, but it seems nothing in comparison to you guys. 2004 was one of my slowest seasons due to all the floods we had, but we still managed to boat 4161 smallmouths for the season. My average is 5600 per season. Even though I fish five to six days a week, I seldom get more than one five pounder a week. But we get pretty constant action which keeps my clients happy.

L.D.

fishing user avatarLUNKER reply :

I believe you guys need to check out this sleeper. In Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. Last June we were up there or as they say UP NORT and had a Smallmouth Fiesta. 5 fish limits of 16 lbs were not uncommon.  Door County is absolutely beautiful and rich in culture which makes it a great family outing. Still confused? Its the inlet between Lake Michigan and Green Bay. A great kept secret and a worthy trip. Im going again this year, just for fun.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Lunker, I have been vacationing in Door County every summer for the past ten years or so.  Although we catch a lot of smallmouth, I've never caught anything over 4lbs. Maybe my buddy doesn't know where the big guys hang out. But as far as numbers go, you won't be disappointed.

fishing user avatarwaterfoul reply :

I too have caught some good smallies out of Lake Champlaine... mostly the northern end of it near St. Albans as I have family living there (cheap vacations!!).

In Michigan, the Muskegon River and Muskegon Lake are good, and some of the northern lakes can produce.  I fish Glen Lake in Lelanau county regularly (parent's have a cottage there) and have on occasion caught smallies on the order of 5 lbs.  I normally boat at least one per trip in the 20" 5 lb category.  And man do they JUMP!!!  Hit like a load of bricks and try to rip you out of the boat.  FUN!!  I get these mostly trolling rattle traps in the chartruse or crawfish colors.

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

I live in Va. and get the pleasure to fish the New River and also the mighty James River. On the James it's usually floating in a jon boat and stopping to wade in certain spots. The smallmouth fishing is great and that is ALL DAY LONG.Those fish pay no attention to how high the sun is,they tear it up all day. It's more of a numbers game rather than size but generally you can catch at least 1, 4 pounder during your trip.75-100 fish days are not uncommon. The New River is bigger and has lots of deep holes and long deep stretches. The smallmouth are bigger there and  are a little harder to catch. But it is not uncommon to pull a 5 pounder during an 8 hour trip.If you get the chance to fish either one, take some 4" Zoom Dead Ringer worms in green pumpkin.....and a tiny torpedo. ;)

fishing user avatarc_ball reply :

Thousand Island area  at Cape Vincent or Clayton,New York.

fishing user avatarJohn in NW PA reply :

We have a lot of fun with the smallmouth on Presque Isle Bay off Erie, PA in the spring.  Soon after ice-out the smallmouth move into the bay following the bait fish, and later to spawn.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

roadwarrior if you havent caught a 4lb. smally on erie you must have never left the dock! I live in NE Ohio and fish Erie out of three different harbors that all have trophy fishing within sight of the docks. At Presque Isle tournaments it takes 15lbs. (three fish) just to think about cashing a check. Im lucky these spots are all with in 1 hour of home. This is sweet because Ohio bass fishing basically sucks!

fishing user avatarjohnbr19792003 reply :

we have a lake in vermont where 4 pound average is common but 6 pounds is crazy i dont believe it remember you catch a 6 pounder then a 2pounder its now a 4 pound average.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Guess I will stick up for RoadWarrior here as he did not say he was fishing in Lake Erie, he said Door County and I think he was referring to Sturgeon Bay in Wisconsin which is Lake Michigan I think in that area. I know there is some great smallie fishing in Wisconsin on Lake Superior on  Cheumogan Bay. I know it did not spell that right but would like to give it a try some time.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

my mistake fellas. I read that wrong. You guys really out to try the central basin of erie though, its really amazing and you dont have to run far to catch some REAL toads. It doesnt take alot of research to find them either :-[

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

Hey John I had a hard time getting any smallies over 2 or 3lbs last year in the bay, always had to hit the big water. Whats up?

fishing user avatarjohnbr19792003 reply :

i dont know if your talking to me and if you are what bay. If your talking st albans bay then yes it was tough, i think its the tourney pressure. Try fishing out by the passage

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

Sorry I was talking to John in NW PA

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

cedar1, Maybe that's the problem, I have never fished Lake Erie only Lake Michigan out of Door County (Green Bay side). The guy I fish with likes catching lots of fish so maybe we aren't fishing the right area for bigger fish. I still have fun, but just haven't caught any monsters up there.

p.s. Thanks for the post, fishrman, you are correct.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

Road Warrior if your ever around western lake erie let me know i have a house on middle bass (free lodging) maybe we can hook up. the trophy fishing isnt as good on that end of the lake but the fishing is still great and we cant beat the price

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Thanks for the invite cedar1, my son is in college at Kenyon College in Gambrier, Ohio, near Columbus. How far is that from you?

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

thats about 2 hrs from me, and it takes me about 2hrs to get to the bass islands. Sounds like the islands would be on your way to or from Columbus. Your in Michigan?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Germantown, Tennessee. The Great Lakes are a destination for me, they're not on the way to anywhere. I was thinking maybe sometime in the fall. How long into autumn do you fish?

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

I fish into november. If your coming from Tennesee I would take you to presque isle. you would be looking at 2hrs from Columbus to my place and another 1 1/2 hrs to there It would be a road trip for you but the fishing is really good both lg and small mouth

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Thanks again cedar1, I'll follow-up with you. I usually make the trek for parents weekend in October and will try to arrange a trip with you then. We'll talk later.

So, back to the "Best smallmouth Fishin' in the USA", I'm on my way to the Tennessee River this afternoon for a day and a-half trip. TVA cut our water off last Saturday so I didn't really fish. We probably only have this weekend and next before our smallmouth are in full spawn, I'm sure many are already there. If the new world record is going to be caught this year, it should be tomorrow! Hope to post a picture of that 12 lb fish on Monday. Good luck to everyone and Happy Easter!

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Wow, that is a very nice invitation from Cedar 1 To you RoadWarrior. I went on a charter boat one time on Erie with a 3 other guys. We did well, but I would much rather go out by myself or have someone point me the right direction. That lake can get kind of mean though and not sure my 18 foot bass boat could handle it.

fishing user avatarJohn in NW PA reply :

Fishing everywhere around here was tough last spring and summer.  It was cold, and the rain never stopped.  I suspect that since it never really got warm in the spring, they never moved into the bay like they usually do.  We've had another bad winter, with ice still on the bay.  Our club is sponsoring a tournament on the bay on 4/10, and were hoping the ice is gone by then.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

roadwarrrior,  ya, will talk

fishing user avatarBronze12 reply :

This isn't neccessarily a trophy smallmouth spot most people think of but the fishing and the over all experience can't be beat.....try the boundry waters in northern Minnesota.  Shoot, One day me and my brother stopped counting smallies at about 100 a piece and still had a lot of daylight left.  Granted the biggest were only around 3 lbs and a majority were around the 1 lb mark but we got ourselves a work out that day.  Its canoe only but wow, what an awesome place.  Definately the most beautiful place I've ever been and the fishing is awesome.  My trick for the big smallies up north (I fish minnesota but I'm guessing this will work in Wisconsin too or anywhere else with some nice rocky, clear water lakes) is to go night fishing.  I look for any nice rock bar that meets any kind of reeds or vegetation.  Not just any rocks either, I'm talking boulders.  I wait atleast an hour after its totally dark but normally its closer to two hours before I go out.  I just take my time and cook up something nice over the campfire and fill up after a long day of fishing, and then its back to it.  I'll hit these rock bars and the outskirts of the weeds with shad raps or top water lures (play around with the lure selection) and I tell you what, You'd better hold on.  Some of the most viscious hits I've had came fishing like this.  You won't catch a ton of fish but when you do they are BIG.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

It's Monday, March 28 and this is my report on the Tennessee River: March has been tough! For the second week in a row, TVA shut their generating down. No current, no smallmouth. We made the best of a bad situation and caught a few white bass, but nothing interesting to report.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

road warrior  Man you guys are lucky to be fishing down there wished I lived farther south!

fishing user avatarcgs2004 reply :

I love the Missouri float streams.  Get a jon boat and and some buzzbaits and hit the riffles early in the morning and you'll get into some good smallies.  Gasgonade, Big Piney, Jack's Forks and many others.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

hey fishrman I can help you out. With a little common sense your boat would be fine. There is also good fishing in the freighter harbors when the lake is to rough

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Hmmm. might have to wait till next year but appreciate the guidance. When do they start hitting there generally speaking?  The largemouth are just starting here. I caught 5 today. Biggest was 17 inches but I had a 20 on. I saw him long enough to wish I hadn't seen him. Using rattletraps and jerkbaits.

fishing user avatarcedar1 reply :

Fishrman  They start at about 50 deg. and really take off at 60. There is a couple of power plants on this end of erie that have warm water discharges. Ill usually start there with jerk baits. If that doesnt work Ill head out to some humps in a little deeper water. Theyre usually not hard to find

fishing user avatarcarpbait reply :

new river in  wv, for larger smallies. For numbers the greenbrier river is full of 10 to 12 inch.

At times you can catch larger ones.

fishing user avatarOcBass63 reply :

I have fished smallmouth all the states and I have found some of the best fishing in Sturgeon Bay. It is a sleeper I agree with Lunker. A 16lb limit happens every tournament but you should check out a group I went with. They caught 27 limits of fish and the winner had 21 pounds and 5th place was 18 pounds. They had a two day tournament that wieghed in 427 pounds of fish for 27 guys. One of the guys has the biggest stringer out of all of the people in the united states. I mean you can go there and catch a 4lb not even fishing.

fishing user avatarOcBass63 reply :

Another great lake in northern wisconsin is Butternut lake. I have hade a 7-8lb fish blow up on topwaters but never caught them. This is another place with a 3 lb average but has the potential for a state record. Joe Butcher fishes this lake for smallmouth and catchs huge fish but it is a difficult lake to fish.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

OCbass63, can you send me an email as I would love to talk to you about fishin Wisconsin especially the area you are referring to. jmillsp@iowatelecom.net

fishing user avatarkegman1 reply :

Fishrman - If your from SE Iowa, you're not too far  away from a good smallie spot (from what I hear).  It's Powerton Lake in Pekin Illinois.  I've never been there myself but i've friends that fish it alot.  You can get on it as early as Feb. because it's a lake used to cool a power plant.  Look it up.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

Kegman1, yes I have heard of that lake. I think it would be about 3 hours or so from me. Wish it were a little closer. It would be fun to try.

fishing user avatarcatnip reply :

Hey, Carpbait, the New is a great area for smallies BUT you'd better warn everyone about having their PFDs handy.  The New (actually the second oldest river in the world) is world renowned for it's class III-V rapids.  Beautiful scenery, lots of great fishing and a place in the world that mother nature will slap the dog stuff out of you if you're not on your toes.

The James River between Iron Gate and Glasgow Virginia is my all time favorite place for smallies.  There is a good population of muskie in there as well as some great pan fishing for the kids.  Class I and II rapids only so it's great for folks that are new to boating moving water.  Plenty of islands for camping during a multiple day trip.  More citation smallies come out of the James than any other body of water in Virginia.

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

catnip, did you go by Shelor and check out that tackle shop?

fishing user avatarrocket09 reply :

Hello everyone, I believe the best smallmouth fishery in the united states is lake champlain or lake st.clair for sheer numbers of fish. For trophy fish over 5lbs I would say lake erie at the eastern end (n.y.) and the western end (ont.) in early spring (may) or late fall (oct.-nov.), also the detroit , st.clair river, and the columbia river, or in canada lake simcoe in late june or late fall (oct. - nov.)  For truly monster fish 8lbs and over you would have to say the tennesee triangle, pickwick, dale hollow, or wilson/wheeler lakes. In late fall tourneys on lake simcoe and eastern lake erie they have come very close to breaking the 30lb mark for five fish limits. I am just glad I live within driving distance to some of the best smallmouth fishing in the world, lake st.clair, lake erie, and lake simcoe. Good luck to everyone in their quest for monster smallmouth!!!

fishing user avatarGarnet reply :

Lake Simcoe is 1 hr. with a stop at Tim Hortons for me and it still stuns me summer 5 fish tournaments you better have 23 lbs.

We also have some small lakes that 20 lbs for 5 fish just very lucky to live in this area.

Garnet

fishing user avatardizzy5868 reply :

The Susquehanna River near Wilkes Barre Pa. Best all aound smallie ever. Trophies in the 5lb range are not uncommon but 3-4 lb fish you can catch pretty consistantly. When the water is above 50 degrees, if you ain't puttin 30 fish a man in the boat a day, you ain't fishin.

Rob

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

rocket09,

Welcome Aboard!

I have also heard that Maine is tremendous for good size, and particularly for numbers. Does anyone know anything about smallmouth fishing there?

fishing user avatarwvubassfan reply :

Here it is I will tell you guys where the hawgs and numbers are. Lake Erie off the fairport launch 2 miles east at the bubble. 4-5lbers all day with the occasional 5 pounder. Up north once again there is a creek that runs through Penn. and Ohio Coneaut creek great stream for numbers and can get a pig in the early spring.

In Ky there is Elkhorn Creek I have great numbers there with some pigs in the spring fall and winter. In the heat of the summer I can't seem to find the big ones.

In Ky there is also KY lake and Parts of Dale Hollow enough said.

fishing user avatarHPBB reply :

Hands down its Erie.

I would say out Of Erie Pa would be the best I have fished.

the bay is good in the spring, once mid summer is here move out to the lake. You don't even have to go far. maybe a mile or so. Start dragging tubes and hold on

I also like Yough Dam, on the western border of Pa & MD

fishing user avatarphisher_d reply :

Welcome aboard rocket09 :)

I have to agree, Simcoe is great for size. New Canadian record was set there last fall, 5 fish limit wieghing 29.9 lbs.

Erie is awesome for both size and numbers. Lake St Clair is on my list to try this year.

fishing user avatarCrazedL.IFisherman reply :

Yes Roadwarrior i go up there yearly and smallie fishing in maine will make your boots quake with excitement, espcially the further north you go in the state like near the moosehead region, plus that far north from what ive heard the  majority of the locals dont like the smallies because their interested in catching trout and salmon, if your every planning on checking it out personal message me and ive got a body of water thats just the ticket, back to the overall thread because im young and havent seen many small dominated impoundments id have to vote for maine big time for good to great smallie fishing

fishing user avatarmainebasser reply :

As for me, Maine is has some of the best smallmouth bass fishing. We don't always get the size (my largest is just over 4lbs) but I rutinely fish lakes that are 500+ acres and never have to share them with anyone. To me there is nothing like spending two or three days camped on a mid-lake island with my woman and my best friends and slayin' smallies left and right. If you like a lake all to yourself then Maine is the place. If you are ever in Maine drop me a line and I'll show you some incredible spots.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

mainebasser,

Welcome aboard!

I have heard many great things about your state, especially the smallmouth bass fishing.

fishing user avatarfishrman reply :

I am enjoying reading some of the new posts on this subject. Makes me want to get out there after them but we are pretty iced up right now in Iowa. I am in the SE corner of Iowa and are smallie population is very small. No one really fishes for them here as there just aren't enough to justify trying. I love smallie fishin. No fish fights harder without ever quitting. Keep the posts coming. Maine is a long way for me to go.

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

Believe it or not there are some good smallmouth lakes out here in New Mexico. I have fished a couple of them, with great success

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

NM...SMALLIES?....HUMMMMMMMMM.... :-?

SOUNDS LIKE A ROAD TRIP TO ME...RW...YOU DRIVING?

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

The State record was broken last year at Ute lake here

The State record was broken last year at Ute lake here

AND WHAT IS THE STATE RECORD?

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

7lbs 3oz

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

HUMMMMMM.... :-?...MIGHT HAVE TO HOLD OFF ON THAT ROAD TRIP....LOL...I HAVE A CHANCE AT THAT EVERY YEAR ON ST CLAIR OR ERIE...CLOSER TOO.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

It's hard catching a State Record around here, it's gotta be north of 11 lb 15 oz.

Maybe #2 would be a more realistic goal.  Do you think 10 lb 14 oz is doable?

My partner caught a 10 in November, 2004. That brown fish should be about full grown by now. Maybe you should come down here. If she is still alive, I know EXACTLY where she lives.

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

TEMPTING...VERY TEMPTING... ::)...SHAME ON YOU TO BE THE SMALLIES DEVIL ON MY SHOULDER...LOL....WILL HAVE TO GIVE IT SOME SERIOUS THOUGHT..... 8-)

fishing user avatarFIN-S-R reply :

I keep preachin bout these okie pigs. Very few target them, so it is an untapped resource...well almost untapped

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

THOSE ARE OKIE SMALLIES? :o.....HUMMMMM..NEW THOUGHT...LOL

fishing user avatarlogger reply :

Lake St. Clair, MI. Used to live 4 miles from it. Great smallie fishing!!

fishing user avatarlazeebum reply :

Road Warrior, I don't think they believe you, they'll just have to come down and try it for themselves. By the way do you use live bait in the Pickwick tailrace or strictly artificial?

fishing user avatarTroutfisher reply :

I think the best lake fishing would be Dale Hollow and Lake Erie.  For river fishing, I personally think, from an unbiased viewpoint, that West Virginia's New and Greenbrier Rivers are at least up there on the list.  Again, I'm not from West Virginia or anything.  ;D

fishing user avatarKy_Lake_Dude reply :

DALE HOLLOW LAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

But Kentucky Lake is very overlooked smallmouth fishery.

And a small river next to Kentucky Lake called the Buffalo has som pretty good smallie fishin. You won't catch too many big ones but 8-14 inchers you'll catch quite a few.

fishing user avatarJnamo reply :

Gotta love St. Clair.  ;D

Jeff

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

lazeebum,

I'm almost exclusively live bait. Specifically, I fish live minnows on a split shot rig and spinning tackle.

As I think I have already stated on this thread, the Tennessee River is not even in the running for the best river for numbers. If it's a shot at the next World Record your after, now that's another story. This is is big bass river. The Cumberland River and it's tributaries are the only other contenders when it comes to size.

fishing user avatarRI_Bass_Guy reply :

The northern end of Lake Champlain is absolutely incredible. If we pull up to a spot and the fish are under 3lbs we leave to go to a better spot. In the middle of the summer last year we were catching 100 fish a day with the largest at 6 lbs 13 oz. It was smallie heaven...

Lake Saccandaga in New York is also underated for numbers of fish but not size.

Lake Winnipesaukee is also a fabulous smallmouth lake but a little harder to fish.

fishing user avatarstratosdriver reply :

Roadwarroir i am from New Brunswick which is next to Maine and fish what is called the grand falls flowage that borders on maine you can catch 3-4 pounders until your arms fall off but nothing i have ever seen much over 5lbs but the fishing is incredible there in may but watch out for stumps!!!

fishing user avatarlazeebum reply :

roadwarrior,

When you fish below Pickwick Dam, do you launch at the ramp below the dam or somewhere else? Also are there any other Tennessee river rats out there?
