So what's the big Humminbird news? 2024

fishing user avatar12poundbass reply :

I was just wondering if anyone knew what the big Humminbird news was today?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

No clue what you're talking about....

But here's their press release page:

http://www.humminbird.com/PressRoom/

fishing user avatarpawpaw reply :

Looks like Mega frequencies on the Helix line

For now.

Doubt that's the big news though.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

If you look at the posted SI images with the 1200 kHz CHIRP you may be surprised.

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

Garmin, Huminbird, and Lowrance have all recently announced new features and product rollouts.  Seems these happen about every 4-6 months now.

It's like computers these days - the moment you buy the latest one, it's obsolete.

They are great images. But on the Helix line?

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

It is a Helix G2N model that produced those screen shots.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Perhaps I'm dense.....where are the images?  Google, BIng, DuckDuckGo give me nada....

I just looked at Doug's images he has and they're awesome!!! It's pretty amazing what they've been able to do! Big question now is going to be how's the pricing going to be?

I have a feeling they're gonna be proud of them.

I have a Humminbird unit and I use their SI on occasion. I was under the impression that the majority of the Humminbird guys vastly favored 455khz over 800khz for it's increased range. It almost seemed like they had very little use for 800 and didn't really need the detail all that much. Now for Humminbird to go this direction is kind of odd to me. Are the Humminbird guys now going to be heading in the detail over range direction?

From what I have seen, the G2N models will be $100 more than current models or the G2 models.

SI Range has been increased also.

fishing user avatarpawpaw reply :

Do you know much increase in range in 1200 over 800?

Does 1200 have a different degree of coverage area than 800?

Is 1200 range no longer depth dependent like 800?

I only know what has been posted for G2N SI range between 455 kHz and 1200 kHz

400' for each side with 455 kHz and 125' for each side with 1200 kHz and both were for 180 degrees of coverage.

All the new specs have not been posted.

Well if 1200 is 180 degree coverage that is awesome. Thank You

This makes my decision extremely tough. Go with the good Black Friday/cyber Monday deals or hold out for the gen2n's to be released? Wayne you're the Humminbird wizard what's your input?

fishing user avatarpawpaw reply :

I can't help but wonder why this new Mega Imaging didn't come out on the Onix instead. I mean how long do you think it would have been until the Helix was a legacy model. I thought Helix was basically a 9 series renamed. Is Helix now their flagship line? Or is it possible that Mega Imaging is coming to Onix too? I don't get it.

If you want the simplest version of the Helix and at a close-out sale price that would be your choice.

If you want the lastest technology with more bells and whistles at MSRP plus $100 for the G2N that would be your choice. Going by what I have seen, I would choose the new stuff. The G2 models in the 5 and 7 series have more capabilities than current Helix models. The G2N's do even more.

There have been requests for the Helix 7 series to have Ethernet capabilities (good flush mount size) and that will happen with the G2N version. The first version and G2 do not.

I have the Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS and the new units are more powerful.

The first issue of the Helix units are now legacy models. That happens when the new stuff is announced.

Not everything has been announced from what I have seen implied. That is supposed to happen tomorrow.

Wayne, if I were to get a new unit, do I have to any transducer exchange?

No simple answer since you did not state what sonar technology or which version. There are 2D Helix models, there are  DI Helix models, and there are SI Helix models.

The Helix 9, 10, and 12 G2N SI models have a different transducer than the other versions. There is nothing to exchange to. Those are the Mega imaging units with a dedicated DI crystal like the ONIX SI transducer.

The Helix 5, 7 and 9 G2 SI models come with the Compact SI transducer and that is what is exchanged for the HDSI transducer that the Helix 10 and 12 current SI models have.

If you get a DI model and want the transducer on the trolling motor, then you exchange the transom version for the trolling motor PUCK.

I haven't read up on the improvements over what is now the Helix legacy units so I don't know if they are all hardware-based or whether any of the new or improved features might trickle down to my Helix 10 legacy unit via software upgrade and possibly a transducer upgrade ???

With the G2N, it's hardware--(transducer and processing power), and software.

The Helix 5 G2 and Helix 7 G2 handles mapping better than the current Helix 12.

The only trickle down would be CHIRP like the current Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS has plus CHIRP Imaging. No transducer difference between the legacy and G2. Possibly the Lakemaster Chart Select Layers processing.

Thanks Wayne. It will be interesting to see what the next software upgrade will bring. For me personally, I plan on using my legacy Helix 10 for a long time...

I'm glad I waited.the g2 helix 7 has autochart live which is great for me since some off the small lakes I fish aren't mapped.

Works very well to the unit's memory or directly to a Zero Line card.

fishing user avatarpadon reply :

yeah I think just for simplicity ill get a different card for each lake. do I need a special card or just a micro sd?

The ONLY memory card you can use for Auto Chart Live is the Auto Chart Zero Line card. It must be the current version that is microSD and not the ones on sale that are full SD size.

Zero Line is the zero depth or shoreline.  There a millions of zero lines on the card.

You sure can spend $100+ for each Zero Line card or you can have a single card that will last the rest of your life.

The only function you can do with a blank memory card and Auto Chart is RECORD sonar logs and load the data to the computer software Auto Chart or Auto Chart Pro. Once the computer program processes the data, you load the maps to the included Zero Line Card to use in the unit.

Might as well. I'm still using 1198/1199 and will until they take a crap or I change boats. I just ordered a new base model Helix 5 for my new project boat. Paid less than $200

There is no legacy Helix 10 yet. The current Helix 10 series is still current. Look at the models on the Humminbird website. The G2N is just another addition to the series that has CHIRP Sonar and CHIRP Imaging. The MEGA SI version has 1200 kHz Imaging.

You bet. I moved up to the Helix 10 from a 798 so that was a HUGE upgrade for me.  I should be good for a number of years now (unless HB comes out with something like a 14" screen with the latest features for $500  )

AH, clarification noted. I just assumed that when the new models came out that the "original" Helix 10 would be discontinued (as you can tell, I don't spend a lot of time on the HB web site looking at the model lineup...I have my "new" sonar and will be standing pat for another 4 or 5 years...! ).

The only Helix models that are legacy now are the Helix 5 and Helix 7 series. They have had their standard two year production run. The new ones are Helix 5 G2 and Helix 7 G2 with some additional G2N for the Helix 7's that are Ethernet capable.

Answered your second question on the other post.

No, only the Helix 9 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N, Helix 10 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N, and Helix 12 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G2N has the (MEGA) 1200 kHz Imaging.

The G2 has autochart live, I think there was something else too but someone else can chime in on that.

The Mega Imaging looks great and I am considering buying the 9in when they are released. They say it has a 2.5 amp draw. I currently have 3 batteries on my boat (2 for 24v trolling motor, and 1 starting battery), but will this new depth finder drain too much of my starting battery to have it start the motor after a day of fishing? 2.5 amp draw seems like a lot for a depth finder and I have no more room for another battery.

At a minimum you need enough MCA to handle the outboard and enough reserve capacity to handle the deep cycle duty you need for not only the sonar unit, but any other electrical items you operate. You may have to upsize your battery or go dual.

The jumper cables you have (should have) may help you decide if any change is needed.

At the bow I use a Helix 12 CHIRP SI GPS along with a 360 for a total of 2.25 A. Then *** SI units at the console. I use a group 29 battery at lakes I can use my outboard. When I fish electric-only waters, I just use my bow setup with a group 24 deep cycle battery. An 8 hour cold day will be a strain on the 24 size battery.

Your results may vary.
