Would love to hear what fish finders you guys are running on your kayaks and your opinions on them. Looking to add one to my WS Ride 135 and want to know what some of the best options are. Not looking to break the bank, but I do want a quality unit. Budget probably maxes out around $350. Thanks!
I am running the Helix 5 SI unit...a little over your price range and i am still learning how to use it as best i can but so far it has done everything i wanted it to and then some.
I fish from a kayak. I use a Lowrance Elite 4X using a scupper transducer mount. It shows depth/structure/temperature. I'm a novice (read: not that good) basser, so that's all I need.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll check those out!
for the money youre trying to spend , definitley look at the Raymarine Dragonfly line
The dragonfly might be a bit pricier, but you can find Lowrance Elite 5Xs for that price range.
Garmin
Lowrence Elite7s HDI
Lowrance Elite 7 Chirp Gold & Elite 5 chirp.
Lowrance Elite 5x Chirp on my Hobie PA14.
I use the Lowrance 3x. I use Navionics on my phone to mark waypoints. I just need something inexpensive to show structure and depth and temp.
They have the Humminbird Helix 5 in that price range with DI and gps.

Can't wait to get mine. How is the SI imaging when paddeling at a relaxed pace?

it's real good. I just adjust the chart speed to match my MPH. Usually a casual pace in my kayak runs about 3MPH
Just got the Garmin 551dv and love it !!!! GPS store has them on sale now for $250 free shipping.
Elite 3x for kayak.
Does a good job in any light conditions and easy to use.
Helix 5/7 both with SI.
Humminbird 798 @ bow, 1198 @ console.
I use 'Birds because I like the interface...it makes sense to me.
The other brands are all great and work well...I always advise folks to go play with the display units at the store, see what they like best. All the wizz-bang features in the world aren't worth paying for if you don't like how the interface works.
Another hummingbird helix 5 di/gps here....
Really like it a lot. Its been in my boat for almost a year, haven't had any issues yet. Works perfectly

The one between my ears,i dont do boats anymore .that bein said i use mine as a depth finder.on my yak ,,,the.best fish finder is birds, stumps, rocks etc
I have an Eagle Fishmark 320 that is mounted on a gutted electric motor . Cut the shaft short and the transducer is on the bottom with the wire running inside . I use it on jon boats and canoes .
I run a HB 571 in front and a HB 899 on the console. Hopeing to upgrade to something networkable for Christmas to replace the 571.
i don't use one though i would like to have one just don't think it's a good idea to put in on my aluminum boat

I have no idea where I would mount it I feel like my 9.9 is too small

Look around and try to find a junk hand control elec. motor , then you will have a portable mount .

thanks definitely going to be putting together now. looks like another winter project
Lowrance elite 5 hdi - combo with sonar- gs - down scan. no chirp. Good unit. I added Navionics chip. Of course it now sells for $200 less than in 2013. Would love a Raymarine Dragonfly with side scan too. Or Lowrance Structurescan.
HB 798 SI/DI unit
I have a 5x that has served me well. Whichever finder you decide to buy it will take some time to learn what you see on it and how to set it to get the most information from it.
Dollar for dollar at entry level I think the Dragonfly is the best you can get. When I bought I was convinced Lowrance was the best bet. I should have done a bit of research. Ray Marine has come a long way...
don't the ray marine units have some weird transducers though? i was looking at one model and the transducer looked like it might be an issue mounting in a yak...
Humminbird Helix 5 SI
Lowrance Elite 4 HDI. Glad I went with the color screen.
I was eyeing on a basic Lowrance but randomly stumbled on a 2 month old Raymarine Dragonfly 4 Pro. Should be here soon but seems I may have lucked out going with Raymarine.
Has sonar, downscan, GPS and colour. Pretty much all I need. And even allows you to connect via wifi to an iPad for bigger display.
This is my first FF, I don't even have my own boat and I have lots to learn. Can't wait!
