hooked fingers 2024

fishing user avatarpmoravek reply :

Hey Guys,

I was watching the FLW tour on Fox and a guy named Gabe Bolivar (sp?) hooked his finger pretty bad. But one of the camera guys new how to get the hook out.

Seems like pretty handy first aid info...

Anbody else know how to get a hook out of your finger if it's barb-deep?

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

This is a great page. Scroll to string-yank technique.

http://www.aafp.org/afp/20010601/2231.html

If it's in and on it's way out (3/4 or more) I suggest to push it all the way through, crush bob or cut entire hok and back out the leftover piece.

Then let your breath out and yelp like a stuck pig, hehe

fishing user avatarpmoravek reply :

WOW!

I'd say that about covers it. Great link Dude.

That's info every angler should familiarize themselves with.

Thanks!

Pretty safe to say that a good lot of us have learned the hard way.

I have x-rays of a rattletrap(full of BB's) stuck in the top of my skull thru my hat, went into bone, sharpening your own hooks isn't always a plus, lol.

ohhyyyy, oww, that hurts just reading it!

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

believe it or not, it really didn't hurt much. The weight impact part of the blow was worse than the hook, I thought I got hit in the head with a rock, really rang my bell.

I've had hooks in my hands and one in my forearm that were screamers.

Yea, I know, I gotta pay more attention :-X

fishing user avatarRattlinrogue reply :

I had that happen twice last year.Gotta watch those treble hooks!

fishing user avataralhuff reply :

Do they need to come up with a "child safety" hook for you LBH...... ;) I'm thankful that I haven't been hooked past the barb. If it ever happens I think I'm going to scream like a little girl....LOL

Thanks for the great site.

Alfred

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Ouch L-B-H,

I had a snagged ChuggBug break free burying the rear treble (2) two barbs deep into my elbow at the funny bone. Had to leave the lake, have it removed. Then went back to the lake and continued the rest of the day throwing the same lure. .......LOL ;D

fishing user avatarpmoravek reply :

LOL

Hey Reelmech...did you find that your own blood was a better attractant then YUM?

Maybe you could bottle that stuff.

;D

fishing user avatarguest reply :

pmoravek,

You wouldn't believe how little that sucker bled. But the impact of the bait hitting the elbow bruised the area something awful. But I continued to catch spots on top on that lure all day....  :o

fishing user avatarFutureClassicChamp reply :

ive seen some pretty nasty things when it comes to hooks gettin embedded in someone. ive had an 8" crankbait with 4/0 trebles in my head, barb was deep in my scalp. the old hook removal kit, a handle and a piece of line, took care of that.

the biggest fluke that i have ever seen is when i was fishin in canada, i was horsing a small pike to the boat ( i had on a 7" jointed rapala), after a headshake at the surface about 15ft from the boat, the rapala flew out and smacked me in the face! i was dazed for a moment, then i realized that the rapala was hooked to my nose. only thing was, it was hooked on the inside of my nose! the barb was way in and it was into the cartilage or whatever kinda tissue that is. had to snip the shank and push it the whole way through my nose. it looked like i had a nose piercing for a couple days lol

thank goodness for knipex hook cutters!!

He could tell you if red trebles really work better.   ;D

fishing user avatarWill reply :

When its cold it doesn't matter how deep the hook goes, it hurts.

fishing user avatardabluz reply :

Aren't you all glad that fishermen rarely fish naked?    :D

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

um,...for many,many, many reasons,lol

fishing user avatarPanamoka_Bassin reply :

Well, since this has turned into "Quint and Hooper Showing Scars" (my favorite scene in JAWS), I'll add my own story...

When I was much younger, I used to work at a marina that supported alot of offshore fishing.  We had a guy come back to the dock and when he was ready, tried horking a mako shark onto the dock for weighing and cleaning.  It was a fairly big mako, about 250 lbs as I remember, and the mate tried using a flying gaff to get the fish onto the gunwales and covering boards.  Well, as his luck would have it, he missed with the gaff, and instead put the gaff through his thigh.  It didn't go all the was through, but anyone that knows how big the hook on a gaff that can lift 250lbs is, it didn't really matter.  He put about a 1 1/2 inch hole in his leg, and ended up cutting a ligament and some nerves.  To this day he has to use a cane to walk.  Ain't fishing fun?

fishing user avatarfishingrulz reply :

i've gotten a hook underneath my fingernail a couple times ************************* >:( >:( leave it at that. ohhh thats gott be the worst. the i got un sterile ecoli in one of them and got a bladder infection that was fun peein the red stuff

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Hoopers turn- while tuna fishing, a friend of ours ,an Igfa line-class junkie, was on a mako on the fly.

mate had stepped into a loop of line on the deck and the mako shot from the boat and cinched the line around his ankle.  Cut a pure line down to the bone.  He also uses a cane now.

fishing user avatarL.D. reply :

OK story time :) First week of November this year I had a client on board that wanted to ties his own jigs on. He broke off and I gave him a new one. As I was running the trolling motor back out away from shore, I hear,"Oh L.D. can you give me some help with this. I turned around and he had a round ball jig head through his bottom lip! That silver lead jig head with the red hook just sparkled in the sun and I asked him if he was makeing a new fashion statement. Since it was all the way through I just cut off the barb and backed it out.

A little while later after he was calmer I asked him how he did it? Seems he can't see all that well and put the hook in his mouth and threaded the line through the hook eye with both hands, his rod was resting on his knee and it slipped off setting the hook.

L.D. :o

I once guided a lady who reached for a smallie with her left hand and buried a hook in it. as she reached for the fish with the other hand, she buried one in it.  She had the back hook of a Rogue in the left palm and the middle hook in the right palm.  I got the fish off and took her to the hospital and all the way there I thought she was praying..The doc could barly get the hands apart far enough to get to the hooks.  She got them removed and gave up fishing.

                                CPR ;D

fishing user avatarChris reply :

I know a guy who went out about a month or two ago and stuck his fishing buddy in the ear. I mean in his ear! They went to the Doc and got it out and had stitches put in. I guess the one guy threw a crankbait then stuck a branch then flicked his wrist and planted it inside the other guys ear.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

What a great thread. I guess if you haven't stuck yourself (or someone else) a time or two you just aren't spending enough time fishing. LBH, thanks for the great link. I hope I never need any of the info, but it's good to know just in case. As the sergeant on Hill Street Blues used to say, "Let's be careful out there."

fishing user avatarpreach4bass reply :

My little cousin and I were at a catfish farm (I know we cheated) catching 2-8lb. cats one right after just for fun.  He hadn't been fishing too many times so I was baiting the bottom rigs and he was reeling in the fish.  He hooked into a 7 or 8 pounder close to the bank and tried to horse him in, but the hook came out of the fish's mouth and sent the bottom rig (1 oz. weight) right over his head.  Unfortunately, one of the hooks snagged his scull with so much force from the weight that it broke the like.  I think the line trick would have worked if I were pulling a hook out of my head, but for my little cousin's heat it required a trip to the ER.  The trip to the ER was for me.  I don't have childre, so I don't know if yet if my parents were lying when they said spanking me hurt them more than me, but I know that hook in my cousin's head hurt me a whole lot more than him.  He made me feel a lot better by keeping the hook as a souvineer.

fishing user avatarsquid reply :

Ok...I have told this one before on here. Tritonman, his son and I were fishing on a camping trip. This was our first day on the water, so we had 3 more days to go...lol We were fishing around some overgrown weed beds when my baby torpedo got hooked in the weeds. Well I tugged and pulled so hard that it came flying towards me. I closed my eyes and turned my head as to protect my eyes. It hit me on the side of my face. I turned to see where it landed, but did not see it anywhere in the boat. His son, then said...OMG!! I turned to look at him and felt the lure haning from my ear. I had two of the 3 hooks stuck in my ear passed the barbs. I had Tritonman cut and try to pull and push them out of my ear. He couldn't do it, so I did it myself. I pushed them far enough for him to grab with pliers and pull them out. He and his son could not believe how much pain I could take ::)...lol....I wanted to cry so bad :o...lmao. Took an hour for me to push them through. We all thought our weekend camping was going to be over before it began....lol. Now I have 3 earings in my left ear ;D....lmao It is amazing that you NEVER feel it go into the skin but hurts like burning blazes coming out.

fishing user avatarHookhead reply :

I took my 10 year old nephew bass fishing for the first time. What did I get for it? Hooked in the head (hence the name).

Click here for all you morbid curious types!

It was a 3/0 Gamy EWG. It hurts just thinking about it. Luckily my buddy showed up and was able to push it through, snip the tip and back it out.  It was DEEP :P
