Well, if they get bored easily I would suggest taking him/her bream or crappie fishing, because you can find and catch them all day long. But, if you really want to take the child bass fishing I would suggest taking them to an area where you know they're very likely to catch lots of fish.
Kudos to you for passing down one of America's greatest past times.

Depends how young but bluegill fishing is non-stop action. It kept all my nieces in the game while they were growing up, great time to teach ecology and respect for the environment also. We would always take a trash bag w/us and clean up the shoreline we were fishing.
The ice cream treat at the end of the day was based on how much trash we took out, not how many fish we caught.

what i am thinking of doing is buying a tandem fishing kayak and fish the pond near home. if things are slow and my daughter wants to go home after an hour then no big deal. probably rig her up with a nightcrawler and just let it free fall. what do you think?

Pan fishing I think is a little better for younger kids. It's easier most of the time to catch pan fish and it keeps them interested longer.
Bass fishing isn't as easy to stay focused on if your not catching anything when your younger.

last saturday, my wife & i took joshua (our grandson) bass fishing for the first time. josh is 3 years old (will be 4 in march.)
the first fish/bass he ever caught was actually hooked by me & he reeled the fish in. ..we did one more like that, then he said, "i want to do it my Self, drandaddy." so, i'd cast gitzit tied to a spinning outfit, & hand it to him. at first, he'd just reel it straight back in, but, after a few times, we got him to "reel twice, stop, count to three, reel twice, etc.,,," he did this & actually stuck & reeled the bass in, after that (he had a hard time reeling them in. LOL)
at the end of an hour & a half fishing, he had caught six bass, four that he had stuck & reeled in himself.
his grandmother was so proud til she has pictures in her wallet that she shows EVERYBODY!
this is the picture of his first one. ...no matter how old he gets, no matter how many fish he catches, this will always be, "Josh's First Bass!" - and, hey, the best pictures are the ones in my heart!

you can see, i edited out the un-important stuff (me - LOL) - we really had a ball & are looking for next week already. ..i'm going to try to find some bream beds for him, if the weather will co-operate.
btw - those missing front teeth are the result of a "golfing mis-hap" between him & his older brother. the ball hit him directly in the mouth & knocked 4 teeth out. the dentist tells us to wait now for permanent teeth. siiigggghhhh

Wow, a kid, fishing from a kayak, don't think I would want to try that one.
I think private ponds and bream fishing is the best way to start one off. After you determine if they enjoy it or not, then mix a little bass fishing with the bream fishing. Like it has been said, if the fish aren't bitting steadily, they get bored real quick. Doesn't matter what size, they enjoy the heck out of it if they are only catching little two finger bream, just so they don't have to go too long without a bite. As they go more and more, they get more patient when they're not biting and willing to wait longer for a bite. My 9 year old granddauther loves bass fishing but if the bite gets too slow, she will lay down in the boat and take a nap or sit there and play with the fish in the livewell, if there are any. After a while, she'll get up and go back to casting again. If she's catching a few bass, it's hard to get her to want to go, even when I've had enough, she'll stay with them all day and night. Plus, when I hook one, I give her the rod and let her reel it in also, unless we both have fish on.

Wasn't going to tumble on this thread but now I'm curious. How many kids and their ages would help. I' not sure about the kayak thing as it is going to at least partially trap the individual you are trying to entice into this in a setting that limits other options. We got our boys into fishing with some degree of success but each in their own time and at an older age than you might be considering. With the grandkids we started earlier and with a larger boat we started the little ones off on the water with us before they could walk. As they got larger 4 or so years old we started them fishing with ice fishing jigging rods and made sure they would have fish to catch through the day. No we didn't set some artificial expectation that they could always go out and catch fish all day but that on any given day they would get a number and we set them up with rod holders as they graduated to ultralight rigs. But it was always ok to kick back and watch the world around them, read a comic book, eat, pretend to drive the boat, eat, watch the fish finders for fish, eat. And they would keep drifting back to their poles. As we taught them casting it became a game to see who could make the best cast. Rigged with T'rigged weightless Senkos they could cast easily, fish through most cover and catch fish. But it was the mix of activities that made the boys enjoy their time on the water and made it possible to start doing club tourneys and youth events with thme by the time they were 6. Now at 8 they are even more fun to take fishing but we still keep in mind that they are 8 and may want to do other things as the day progresses. Like eat. Did I mention the importance of bringing plenty of neat picnic stuff?

My son caught his first bass yesterday on a spinnerbait. I took him walking around the lake casting to patches of grass. If you can fish from shore maybe you should give that a try. Good luck to you and your kid. It's something you will never forget and it will give you the greatest feeling ever as a dad. Here's my little man with his first bass and many more to come.

I took my two girls bass fishing for the first time last year. My older one had been bluegill fishing before. They were casting for about 1-1/2 hours before they got tired and wanted to come home.
So, I guess in answer to your question, I didn't.

what i've learned with my own kids and taking alot of other kids fishing is that all a kid wants to do is catch a fish. they don't care if its a bass or bluegill, all they care is that its a fish that they hooked and reeled in all by themself.
a kid just wants to say they caught somethig, even the size doesn't matter.
take a kid fishing and they will be hooked for life...

Well since I run a youth fishing program, I can tell you this; Try and take them FISHING!! period. Teach them how to fish first, then teach them how to bass fish if they still like to go fishing. Take them out for no more than three hours, use live bait first to get them use to catching fish, then slowly work them into plastic baits. Fish from shore to get them the hang of casting and setting the hook, then when you feel you will be safe...lol.....take them out in the boat and teach them how to place the bait where it should go. Now this does not happen in one outing....over the years maybe, but you can take them in the boat with you anytime you want and cast for them, but give them live bait to just catch fish and a smile. You will be a hero in their eyes if they can bring in a big one with dad in their sights.
Anymore questions about teaching a child to fish..just send me a message. Just remember...hook and bobber to start and you wont go wrong in their eyes.

Oh forgot this one.....take a camera with you....everytime. Also, if it's not a bass, let them keep the fish, but also teach them about/why catch and release.

I have a daughter and a son that both love to fish.
I have been taking them since before they were walking, not in a boat but from the bank.
What was said in another reply is correct, kids just want to catch fish and if you really want them to enjoy it then leave your rods at home and give them all your attention at least for the first few trips until they have learned to bait their own hooks and cast their own lines.
You also want to take some snacks and drinks, and if you intend on fishing during the first few trips you may even take some coloring books or some other form of entertainment for the kids, that way when they get bored they can do something else while you fish.
A young child under 10, I wouldn't even consider putting in a kayak, I take my nephews out in my 19ft bass boat and it's chore keeping them from falling out of it sometimes. We go crappie fishing with my younger nephews, my older ones love to bass fish and can stay at it all day long.
For age reference,
I have 1 niece age 11
I have 4 nephews ages 9,11,13,and 16
My kids are :
Daughter 20 and married
Son 17 will be 18 in March
Most fond fishing memory with the kids:
Eufala lake NE Oklahoma last spring, the crappie were on the bank spawning,I took my parents my little sister, her husband and 3 boys and one of their friends my wife and I, we went through 2 pounds of minnows and probably caught over 200 crappie, I cleaned 80.
Those kids kept me busy retying lines, removing fish, baiting hooks, and running to the bait shop for minnows.
It was an awesome day!!!!!

I've taken my Daughter out a handful of times (she's now 5). When I take her we fish from the bank at a small pond or a small stream. I set her up with something small so she can catch bluegill and sunnies (she's like her Dad, she has to be doing something! LOL! So it's usually a small grub she can cast out and wind back in). If she gets bored, I let her do her thing. After a while, she comes back to her pole for another go. I'm also on board with leaving your rods at home and giving them your total attention! Hope this helps!

I introduced my daughter to fishing when she was very young, but 2 things dominated my thoughts:
> Keep her rod bent as much as possible (bluegills / carp), even if meant that daddy was bored
> Make darn sure she didn't get stuck by a hook.
After that it was a walk-in-the-park, as both my girls love fishing (my wife and my daughter).

Make it their day to shine bring snacks, take pictures, leave when they get bored. Use live bait until they get the hang of lures sometimes they are just happy casting all day with just a bobber.

I find that the most important thing when taking a kid fishing is to not fish yourself. concentrate all of your efforts on making sure the child is safe, happy, learning respect for the fish and all outdoors. Most of all it has to be fun. Add a zebco reel a short rod, a few dozen worms, some #6 hooks and a few of the red/white plastic bobbers and put him/her into bream. I found this to be a surefire way to a happy day of fishing with any youngster.
Funny thing is you will come home feeling better than most days when you are fishing.

A Texas or Carolina rig works pretty good. It's according to how big the child is. Sometimes you can troll with them on top for Gators. ;D ;D ;D

I have been taking my girls fishing for bream and they love it. We use some gulp worm and have fun. It is to great to see their faces when they feel the fish at the end of the line.

I fish quite often with my children (I have 3 and 1 on the way). At this point I take my two oldest with me (son (5yrs) & daughter (3yrs)) much of the time in a 10ft jon boat using a trolling motor. We usaually will fish for bluegill and bass. They have their own pole and just play most of the time making up stories and pretending to catch fish. I also keep a whole container of old plastic worms, lizards, etc in my tackle box and break that out when they get bored. They can be occupied for another 30 minutes with that and I love to hear the stories they make up. My daughter begs me to go fishing and my son is always asking when I am going to catch a monster. They both love the time with their daddy and I love it too. I definately don't get as much serious fishing done but that is not really the point. They love to see me catch them and I am teaching them a love for fishing that will really pay off in the future. I have taken my son out with me for up to 4 hours in the jon boat. That is alot of time for a 5 year old in such a small area. It just takes time to work up to that. The first few times I took my daughter out, she was ready to go back in after about 15 minutes but just last weekend we were out for about 2 hours. We caught bluegill and golden shiners but no bass. They loved it.

I am a retired Elementary School Principal and Teacher. Statistically, elementary aged children's attention span will not exceed 20 minutes unless the adult is right there to motivate. This means that you really should not count on wetting a line yourself. Changing locations and even baits will keep the child interested for a longer period of time. Also, make each catch a celebration. Sounds corny, but such is the mind of a child. Hope this helps.
