Fishing In The Rain 2025

What do you guys think about fishing in the rain. I've read some where that fish are more aggressive right before it is about to rain and they can sense when it is about to rain. Anyone else fish in the rain and notice more luck? I know I've caught some big bass during rain but just wondering about what you guys think.

It also seems that the fish love the barometric change that jump starts a feeding frenzy ...
Don't know if bigger ones hit ...
But I do catch more when it rains !

Lots of variables, weather is just one of them.

i love thowing big spinner baits in the rain, cahtter baits. prob one of fav types of weather to fish.. the top water bite is pretty good to

i'm with wnybassman, some days are good..some not so good. there is one thing that always remains the same, i get wet.

I've also had good days in the rain, but at the same time I've had some not so good ones. it does seem like if they are biting, they are biting good though.

I think that just being out, in your boat, during a rain storm, in the right gear, is kind of cool. Sometimes I catch fish and sometimes I don't. It isn't an environment that I hang out in a lot, so when I get to I appreciate it.
I don't appreciate getting caught in the rain without appropriate gear. That is the kind of behavior that gets you sick and you miss work - that ain't cool.
There is always that moment, 10 minutes into the rain storm, right before I turn on my bilge pump where I think to myself, "I hope the bilge pump isn't broke."

I love it. There's a lake here in Va where me and my partner go and we just pray for high winds and rain..when it's blowing and pouring they eat up there!! we always have great days there when this happens. If it's sunny there it's usually a bust but we did have one stellar day last spring where it was sunny....just never know! But I love to fish in the rain!

I have had days when the bass bite better in the rain, and I have seen it when the rain shuts them down.

Smallies seem to fire up before the rain clouds roll through. But they can shut down once the the clouds/rain settles in. Unless its mid summer, the rain can push the fish up shallow due to the colder water (and supposedly gets the fish up shallow in early season due to warmer water but I have no first hand knowledge of this phenomenon with smallies).
I had a hot, midsummer, high skies day on the water last year where I patterned the fish by fishing locations where homeowners sprinkler systems where over spraying into the water. Worked great, plan on using that system again this summer. Any chance I get to catch them shallow Ill take.

I've literally had my best, and worst days in the rain. One tournament was a non stop down pour from 5:30 am to 1pm, I went skunked except for 2 shorts, no one got a limit, and the "lunker" weighed in at a whopping 2.03lbs. Another tournament started as the rain came down on and off, everyone was catching limits and we had 4 people catch fish over 5lbs, I walked away with the win and the lunker at 6.45lbs.
A few years before I started fishing local tourneys I was night fishing off land when storm rolled in. I was throwing a chatterbait and around 2am it started coming down. A few minutes into the rain I hooked something and thought I was snagged. I gave it a tug and ended up landing a bass well over 8lbs. This was before smartphones with flashes, and my scale was in the truck. I decided it was more important to keep this beauty alive and well than carry it a half mile for a pic and risk its life. Even though I dont claim it on my profile, It's the biggest fish I've caught BY FAR.
Another habit I've gotten into is fishing drain pipes and any sort of pool that water drops down into AFTER lots of rain. Most of the time the big fish will sit in ambush while the water drops meals in front of their face.
IMHO, the fish love the barometric drop, but the rain also breaks up the surface, reduces visibility, and makes so much commotion in the water that the fish let their guard down. They can't see or feel your lure hitting the water, and when it passes by they're much more willing to bite. Either way, when it rains, I'm usually out there catching fish!

X2, In my area, due to the recent hurricanes and heavy rain, a lot of folks have installed pumps that have pipes running from the front of the house to the back. The fish sit under each of those pipes, making it easy to pattern Largemouth especially during the summer.

Oh yeah, before, during and after. Fish like it, so I like it. I think a lot has to do with the conditions usually associated with rain (low light, wind, runoff, front, etc) any one of which can make fishing better. One thing I've found is that there will usually be a window, where they bite their heads off, and it happens in various places at once. Also, keep in mind that conditions will change from hour to hour (or moment to moment) so keeping up with them is important.

I always catch good healthy bass during rain. Theres times I get skunked.
Always bring your rain gear in your boat or truck or car. You never know when its going to rain because I got stormed in without gear. Thanks mother nature.

Usually things pick up when the rain comes down. The times that are the best I find are right before the storm if you've had a few days of stable weather before.

Love the rainy days. Cuts way down on the boating traffic, pleasure and fishing. No distinct shadows. What is above the surface is obscured by the disturbed surface of the water. Also agree with those who fish areas where water drains into the pond/lake/river, carrying insects, grubs, worms and whatever to provide an easy meal for the fish.

Rain generally seems to increase the amount of bites. Rain is my favorite weather to fish in.

I love fishing in the rain. Nobody on the water but my sorry heiny. If it really starts to dump, I'll paddle under some low hanging branches at the shoreline, kick back, and wait it out - or cast from that position. I was born and raised in the Seattle area. Rain is just part of one's life here. Enjoy, adapt, or move. I chose to stay and enjoy it.
