bass with big teeth 2024

fishing user avatarThe Crow reply :

I have noticed that bass that predominantly feed on bait fish tend to have much bigger teeth when the bait fish are abundant after spawn . has anyone had any bass bite line off. on two recent trips I have been bitten off on 5 occasions and my line is great I have tested knot strength, this has just never happend before now. most breakoffs have been on hook set or the strike and only on fish over 6lb , am I striking too hard but even 25lb line has been biten off or can a bass cut line at a certain time of the year.

fishing user avatarOHIO reply :

Are you sure it's a bass cutting your line?

fishing user avatarThe Crow reply :

very sure no tigers in the dam

fishing user avatarFL_Sharpshooter reply :

Maybe you should start putting a leader on your line.  In the canal I fish, there's an overpopulation of chain pickeral, gar, and alligators.  The reason I don't put on a leader is because I am usually throwing 20#-50# power pro braided line.  I've been fortunate enough not to catch/snag a gator, but I've caught plenty of chain pickeral and florida gars.  Hope this helps.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Just notice you are from South Africa. You guys probably have way more aggressive fish in that water than we do.I don't even want to began to try and guess what's cutting your line in there.Largemouth Bass do not have sharp enough teeth to cut line unless your fish is entirely another specie of bass.

fishing user avatarThe Crow reply :

thanks for the replies guys , we have the regular old Florida and northern strain bass out here , maybe its just my over aggressive strike or the fact that I am bouncing the lure of rocks and trees and its weekining the line some how but is good quality line. I have been using seguar as a leader. Just never encountered this problem before and the bass have unusually large teeth at the moment . needed a plaster the ruff thumb was so bad.

fishing user avatarHot Rod reply :

I'd first suspect it was an issue with cover abrading/nicking the line then the weaken line breaks on the hook set. Try retying often by cutting off the last 12" -18" of your line. If you don't already, make sure you thoroughly moisten the line/knot before tightening.

What type of knot are you using? What power/action rod are you using? Are you using braid with a floro leader? A lot of variables could be compounding the issue.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

FC line is very difficult to get any knot over 80% line strength. However you are using 20-25 lb test line and shouldn't be breaking it on hook set unless you are setting on a short line with a hard slack line whip set.

Check you line by running it between your fingers and looking /feeling for abrasions and retie whenever you feel or see a nick.

The reel set and rod sweep will help to prevent hook set line failures.

NLMB or FLMB bass don't have sharp edge teeth that can cut line, the teeth are round and pointed for gripping, not tearing. Bass teeth can abrade the line during a head shaking fight if the line get across the lips, not on the hook set.

Tom

fishing user avatarIntrepid reply :

unless youre sight fishing, are you sure its bass that are breaking you off? i ask because you said on the hook set or when you get the strike, and unless sight fishing shallow water i wonder how you would know for sure its bass that are breaking you off. i trust you when you say your line is good, it could be your knots

fishing user avatarshimmy reply :

First thing comes to my mind is do you have any northern pike in there? That would cut that line like butter.

Second, you are damaging the line against rocks is my guess because i do not believe those bass are breaking you off on clean 25 pound line.

fishing user avatarRicVA reply :

Agree with above?  How can you be sure it's a bass cutting it?  I'm not expert in S.Africa waters, but has to be something else with more significant teeth.

hmm i disagree, there have been studies on largemouth bass, it started out to be looking at the difference of northern strain and florida strain largemouth bass, in there studies, they noticed that the fish can differ from one body of water to the next. also, did you know bass have a little bit of ability to camouflage? thats why bass are more green and yellow when you pull them from mats. that camouflage is very fast form of adaption. animals will evolve and adapt to suit the environment, and if bass can differ from one lake to the next, imagine what a bass from the other side of the world is like! my guess is that bass in south africa may have evolved and adapted by growing longer teeth to catch slipperier prey.

I say ditch the flouro leader and run all braid.

fishing user avatarNBR reply :

I have bass fished for over 60 years and have never had a bass cut my line and actually have had very few pike or pickeral (less than 2 a year) cut me off. The only thind I can think of other than a different kind of fish is a defective guide on your rod(s).

Ignoring the fact that a strain of bass wouldn't make such a large adaption in such a short amount of time:

I do notice that some bass i catch have very rough lips, and others not so much, but it would take some pretty large teeth to actually cut the line as quick as he describes.

Getting bitten off by bass is not feasible on 25 lb. line. Something else is going wrong.

Tell ya what, it aint a bass...

Use a 6 in steel leader. I use one almost 80% of the time because I've lost several cranks and spinnerbaits to toothy critters.

fishing user avatarTaylor Fishin 4 life reply :

? lol i didnt even know they have bass in africa...learn something new everyday. Ever think it could be just old line that is brittle. I would just Use a heavier braid, its a little more  abrasion resistant.

fishing user avatarTaylor Fishin 4 life reply :

Also Check your eyes on your rod for nicks by swabbing a Q Tip in the eyes.If cotton is getting caught on your eye then that might be the culprit. . IF your eye had a crack in it that could be weakening your line.

fishing user avatarThe Crow reply :

Thanks for all the advice been doing some extensive testing I recently changed line , was using a spectra braid and spooled up some cheep braid that was given me to test . athough it is strong just a small nick in the line is enough to get it to break but only on a hard yank like a hook set must have been getting hammered in the structure where my previous braid held out better. the bait ive been using ( owner rib eye swimbait) is also fairly heavy and I am punching it through heavy cover.

next time i am out I will get some pics of the bass teeth which are bigger than what ive seen before and post it on this forum

Thanks again I feel like a fool but I have learned a great deal from your coments

This is my first post ever here. I would like to share a story.

I was fishing with my son on a small state managed lake in Tennessee. There are documented 10+ largemouth caught there and it is rumored the TWRA shocked up a 15lber a few years back. It's full of gizzard shad and the bass have always grown large there. It also has catfish, crappie, bluegill and hybrid stripers. To make a long story short, a week earlier, I had caught a 7lber. The big fish were on the prowl. Fastforward a week, and I caught another 7 pounder about mid day. My son hung a fish and we saw a large gold flash and it got away. It was a large fish, at least 5lbs, but we didn't get a good look.

My son is only 12, but he's big, strong and athletic, so he can handle a 6'8" rod no problem. He's caught tons of largemouth 4 - 6 lbs. He has a Castaway heavy action, I think they call it their lizard rod. He's young but knows how to tie many different knots and is a perfectionist. I've never had a failure on a palomar knot and i've fished since I was a kid. He's always been fascinated with knots and even asked for a knot book when he was about 8. He studied and practiced knots for years. I'd trust his palomar far more than even my own, and I've never had one fail. He reties regularly.

He had just spooled his reel up with brand new Big Game 15lb test, a line I've had tons of success with over the years. He had just tied on a 6" Yum Dinger. He got a hit, set the hook, felt a surge for a second, and you guessed it, his line became limp and it just came in. We both were stunned. I looked it over and there was 1 abrasion place about an half inch above the break. I've never had a bass bite my line in half, but that's exactly what it appeared to be. He went on to catch his personal best, a 7lber. So we had two 7's in the boat, hooked another monster, and had something to bite his line in half. We also caugh quite a few 3 to 5's that day. My bet is that the fish that bit his line in half was a 10lb or better largemouth. Big fish were certainly on the prowl.

Never had it happen to me in 41 years of fishing. He still talks and wonders about it. Though we wish he had caught that fish, it was so unusual he continues to dream about the one that got away. I've only read one post on The BFHP where an estimated above 12 lber bit though a guys line at Guntersville.
