fishing user avatarJosephManning reply :

My baby pet large mouth bass swims fast towards the glass and opens and closes his mouth very big, when I walk up to the tank.

Does anybody know why he does this?

fishing user avatarJosephManning reply :

My Baby pet bluegill will do this too

I thought this was gonna be a thread about the color baby bass never getting bit, and then I was gonna agree that yeah that color sucks lol.  Then I was sad that it was about pet bass, but still wanted to share my opinion about that stupid bait color.

Maybe you bore him. Put the TV on. Maybe he'd like to watch Matlock.

One of my favorite fishign memories is when my dad connected with about a 12" bass, and he was toying with it on the way back in. A much larger bass decided it was lunchtime and hit it three or four times trying to get the little one in its mouth. I think line tension was keeping it from eating it headfirst enough to get them both.

Totally unexpected and all played out in crystal clear water so it was a blast to watch.

After pulling a 3 foot snake out of a 3lb bass, I'm convinced that if they are hungry they'll stuff anything in there that might fit.

We had a very small pond on our deer club years ago. The owner put several small one pound bass in it. Over the years they decimated the frogs, salamanders, and any small prey associated with it. Needless to say, after a while they had eyes on each other! I walked by one day and saw one swimming by and it had a tail sticking out of it’s mouth, it had eaten on of his pond mates of practically the same size!

My Oscar knew when it was time to eat also. He would eat right out of my hand.

My snakes do this, too. Anytime anybody walks to their enclosures, they peep their little heads out. If there's a rat, they eat; if there's a spray of water, they duck back in all indignant; and if there's a hand, they get to go explore*.

* If the hand smells like a rat, things get interesting.

Hi, Joseph.

I see fish yawning quite often in my underwater videos.

From what I've read, and what I believe I'm seeing, bass yawn for a number of reasons:

-They are known to do this under oxygen stress, to accelerate water over the gills. So... apparently they actually do yawn for oxygen, like other animals.

-They've been observed yawning when becoming active, say, to feed. This increasing level of arousal may require a surge of oxygen?

-I think, it looks like, fish will yawn simply to stretch those muscles. It sure looks that way.

-Bass yawn during spawning, a sign of arousal/aggression it appears. They will signal to other bass to stay away by opening the mouth -not a full yawn though- and by making biting gestures. They've made biting gestures at me too, standing on the bank. I've also seen/video'd excited males fully engulf the head of a female on the bed.

Your bass is most probably excited, anticipating food. Bass can learn, and even anticipate, food. Something anglers should make room for in their fishing lexicon.

Be prepared to feed your Juvenal bass pet a lot of live prey as it gets over 6" long.

I had a baby bass in a aquarium for about 12 months until it was about 12" long.

The pet bass was eating 2 dozen feeder goldfish a week until I released it.

The bass destroyed everything put in the aquarium and waited to be feed watching for the bag of goldfish and raced back and forth when shown the bag very excited.

Good luck,

Tom

There's a dude on YouTube now that's got one LMB in a big tank, and he's got two others and some panfish in a little pond out back. His new one, in the tank, is a real bruiser. Fun to watch.
