I use spooks, sammies, and chug bugs just about throughout the year. I always have one tied up and anytime I see surface action I'll throw it

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

I heard the frogs out singing today. I guess the time is now.

fishing user avatarbuzzfrog reply :

hey i know that ponds get warmer quicker, so this may be indication, cause today after spring cleaning at the camper, i was throwing a shakey head, but kept seeing bass blow-up on mating dragon flys and other bugs,.. i was hurried when i left and didnt bring a single tackle box with a topwater today, though i did bring my topwater setup... ewwwhh. i was ticked lol

fishing user avatarNCbassmaster4Life reply :

Usually in NC when the trees just start to bloom and turn green the bass are on the beds and it's prime.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

To me, 60° is the magic temp, though last year I was catching them in a pond on topwaterswith temps in mid 40s. But that's a pond, so...

fishing user avatarPegwedge reply :

I got three pretty violent hits yesterday in central WV twitching a Rapala minnow on top. I was cranking it but we weren't getting any hits so I thought I might try something different. Never would have dreamed it would work this early. We've had a bit of a warm streak but the water was still pretty chilly.

fishing user avatarNCbassmaster4Life reply :

So correct me if I am wrong it takes longer for a stained lake to warm up than a clear lake?

fishing user avatarShane J reply :

No, stained areas warm up quicker.

fishing user avatarnycgrip reply :

I used 832 last season for frogging and didn't lke it one bit. The line sinks on pauses and will get cought up in the underwater branches of the lillies and be hard to pull throught if not snagging, forcing you to go in there and free it up. My recommendation, stick to floating line for frogging in pads.

fishing user avatarbuzzfrog reply :

yea, that sux, all i heard was steven try it , yea it is great, never dreamed that there was a sinking braid, i am not sure what to do with it, i could back it off, last time i did that i got a terrible knot in it, guess i could put back on spool

thanx

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

We caught several on topwater here in N.E. Kansas today, buzzbaits and poppers. 55 seems to be the magic temp around here but it doesn't get good until it gets to 60.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

This year in WNY....NOW!!!! At least in places with warm water. Like J.Francho said, it does seem like between 55-60 degrees is the starting point in the spring, in the fall I have caught them well in water that was in the low 50's.

fishing user avatarFat Boy reply :

Funny, I just posted on my blog about this topic. In Maryland, I've been ice fishing on this day in the past, and with this warmth, everything is happening so fast. Last night, the lake that I had an hour to fish just had that topwater feel to it. Frogs and toads everywhere, bugs buzzing me, panfish dimpling the water feeding on them, spring peepers singing in the background. So, I tied on a buzzbait and withing a few casts toward the end of my legal fishing time, I hooked a decent three pounder...but the bass threw the hook right at my feet before I could lip it. Still, this was my first time ever in Maryland hooking a bass on a buzzbait in March. I'll be pitching topwater more and more this week.
