TOO MUCH TACKLE 2024

heading to tablerock tommorrow for me and my boys annual crappie trip. was getting things together today and found that i had 13 rods and 2full tackle bags. i belive in being prepaired but this seems a little much.
anyone else have a problem with concentrating on one specific type of fishing and just gearing up for that?

Yes, Try, we all have this problem.
It arrives when we have too much knowledge of baits, tackle, rods, reels, time of the year, patterns weather and water conditions.
It is very difficult but I have taught myself to take only three rods and a few hard baits along with some plastics and corresponding tackle.
By taking three rods, extra reels, I have lightened my tackle load.
This has caused me to plan ahead by taking three rods and reels for various presentations and realizing that I do not need 100 crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs, etc. along with 100 pounds of plastics.
When fishing with kids, I use live bait as children's attention spans are not that long and if they do not catch something in five minutes their minds go into another direction and they get board.
You know how you want to fish so take along what you believe gives you confidence and that you can change presentations with the same rods and reels and line test.
Just remember the golden rule of kids fishing: Keep the children entertained.
While they are young you will teach them how much fun and challenging fishing can be so they can graduate to plastics and moving baits as they get older and have better hand-eye coordination.
Have fun and don't forget....everyone wears a PFD when fishing, no matter the temperature.

thanks Sam . that sounds like good advice. i forgot to mention that my boy is 27 yrs old, and probably has more stuff and knowledge and i do! just hope he is not as conflicted as me. i do have a six yr old grandson that your advice will work well with.

I didn't know there was such a thing!!? I only have 4 rods but I have 2 full tackle bags, and those clear plastic boxes full of lures in every compartment of the boat. Funny thing is I only use primarily Jigs with various trailers, 10"worms, swim baits and creature baits. I have a whole bunch of other lures that I haven't even tried yet because the above mentioned lures usually work for me.

I was at BPS when Brent Chapman was there giving a talk. He actually spoke about carrying too much tackle when he was starting off and that now that he knows what works (colors etc.) he takes a limited amount of tackle with him in his boat.
I was surprised because there supposed to get you to BUY tackle. 
Makes sense though...how many things in your bag or boat will NEVER hit the water??

I have few things in my tackle box that don't hit the water but the problem is that I don't fish it LONG enough for it to work. I resolve to be more patient with lures this year.

I used to carry more tackle than I do now. Over the years I've just narrowed it down to maybe 2 to 4 rods (which would be 1 to 3 different weights, and maybe a back up. Even for a hard-core, long range trip where I didn't know what I might encounter, I'd still only bring 5 or 6 rods, and I'd leave 2 or 3 of those under the bedcover of my truck, while out on the boat.
Then, one good sized tackle bag, and I have all the tackle I need.
I mean, what do I need anyway ? A box of Huds. A box of Huddlebugs and Basstrix Bluegills. A small box of hooks, splitshots, etc. The crawlers go in my lunchbox. Cameras have their own Pelican case.
If it were up to me, the bait monkey would starve.

haha sounds like my dad. I go out fishing with 3 rods and he says i have too many, and my big tackle bag, says i dont need all that tackle. But when we are both fishing the same pond i pull out five and he cant get a nibble, he is quick to stop talking. Anyone who says you have too much tackle, well they are just jealous!

My favorite is out fishing with friends and bringing 3-4 rods and usually my big plano bag and a medium bag. They always say when walking down the dock, "oh look here comes BPS!"
By the end of the day they are all rummaging through the bags. It just makes me chuckle. lol

I have a lot and im still buying more (Thanks monkey) and always bring everything my boat can hold.
Who knows if ill ever come back home again..... Need to be ready to stay a few months

5-6 rods? Starving bait monkey? Haha are you sure about this? Maybe he is just pretending to be hungry.... he has alot of dirty tricks you know...

One issue that I struggle with in my home waters is alot of species variety. In any given day we will target walleye, pike, smallies, perch, heck even sturgeon. However that being said I think I'm getting pretty good at bringing only what I need for the day. However I have a whole room in the basement...complete with a bed for my bait monkey!

I recently went through my stuff and took a bunch out. Im a BIG sucker for plastics, there are just so many that look so good in the store but then out on the water I dont have the confidence to hardly tie them on.
One thing that has been awesome though, until this past Christmas I had only 1 GOOD rod/baitcaster setup. I was constantly cutting and tying something new on. I got 2 more nice rod/reels for xmas and that is SOOOOOO nice to be able to have 3 rigs setup on the deck...wow I dont know how I fished before!
I remember when I only had one I would get this paralysis...I would start seeing fish on the surface when I had a carolina rig on or somtehing and it was like 'AH do I cut it off and tie on that popper or should I fish this ledge before I blow off of it'.
I think one thing that helps is to resolve not to overflow out of whatever containers or tackle boxe you have the proper space for. Like right now I know in my crankbait plano box I only have 2 more spaces so the most I could get in there is 4 more crankbaits. Helps to limit my spending at BPS or the WONDERFUL local baitshop I have RIGHT down the street that has a HUGE ROOM of plastics alone.

Nine rods, all rigged. Three tackle boxes (none huge), a plastic ammo style box full of plastic, A couple of rubbermaid containers, one with batteries for the portable, suction cup fishfinder, another for my wallet, keys, and cellphone. If I tip over they'll float, and keep the contents dry. An empty five gallon bucket to use as a drift anchor, another bucket containing the mushroom anchor, a plastic bag with rain gear on days it might rain, a paddle, and a landing net.......................................in a canoe.
And, believe it or not I have plenty of room for more. The canoe weighs 50 pounds, the contents, not including me must weigh a hundred fifty or so.

What's worse is if you like fly fishing too. That adds at least one 7 weight and one 5 weight flyrod/reel to the arsenal.
There isn't any easy answer. No matter what you bring, you'll always leave something behind that might work better (at least in your head). It's why the baitmonkey has such a grip on us. I'm thinking of getting a pack mule to carry all my excess gear.

I took some years off from fishing due to 2 masters degrees, a wife, a big dog, 4 young children and a job that demands 65 hours a week away. Now, I have the monkey his own room in my house and one of those sad dad kid carriers that he rides around in with me all day because my wife wont let him stay in the house when I'm not home.
I have a job in medical sales that affords me on some days a few minutes to wet a line. In order to be prepared for this, I keep in the back of my truck 2-3 rigged baitcasters (plastics, lipless and spinnerbait), 2-3 rigged spinning outfits (drop-shot, shakey/plastics and lately a spinning rig with 15#braid on because Bill Dance told me it would be handy when I was 16) and 2 medium sized tackle bags with accomanying worm binder, spinnerbait binder and an FTO Magnum worm bag.
NOW, my justification for this, I tell myself, is i have only really gotten back into fishing 3 years ago. I am trying to find my style, and who knows what they are going to be hungry for that day. What I spend most of my time doing is trying to learn from as many people as I can how, what and why all of the tackle I have acquired is worthy.
2 of my children are now fishing with me (occasionally), so they have their own stuff. I do try to keep it simple for them and create opportunities that they can use "some of daddy's stuff".
EVERYBODY I know thinks I have gone completely nuts.
