With Cabin Fever Approaching.. 2024

fishing user avatarWhiteMike1018 reply :

What are some of the things youll do to keep you busy this winter? It dosen't have to be fishing related.

I know ill be preparing my tackle for the upcoming season but I will also be in the gym building strength and trying to put on some muscle. And ill be trying to make as much money as possible! So when spring comes I have money for fun fun fun.

How about you guys?

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

I like to kill stuff for a couple months.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

I'll clean all my reels.  Hopefully upgrading my electronic on the console to a HB HDSI unit. Reorganize tackle 14 times. tick off my fiancee talking about fishing and hogging DVR space with fishing shows that I've watched 3 times each already.  Changing poopy diapers.  Develop a rash from not fishing for 6 months.  More diapers. Talking with you fine folks.

Is is Spring yet?

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

I like to keep my off season filled with fishing related activities. I'll start with cleaning, organizing, updating my gear.  Next it's tinkering time.  Bearing and drag washer upgrades, switching blades on spinnerbaits or hooks on cranks etc. and different lure modifications I'd been wanting to try, but was too busy fishing to do.  Then it's time to work on building a new rod or two, or at the very least, adding a decorative thread wrap to the butt of one of my rods.

Now it's time to plan the two fishing vacations I'll be taking next season. One is a yearly treck to N.W. Wisconson and that's just a matter of determining what dates and which lake I plan to visit.  The other could be anywhere and between research and coordinating vacation time with my buddies, figuring out who will be driving and which boats we'll be taking and actually making reservations, the process can take a few weeks. Plus, there's all that communication between us that gets me pumped.

Next to last is catching up on fishing related reading.  I hold out on this until a few weeks before opening as it really gets me pumped.

Last is getting the boat prepared. With a newer boat it won't take long, but in years past, some of the projects have been lengthy.  Then, it's sit and wait for opening day and hopefully I'm not to this point until after New Years! :mouse-28493: :mouse-28493:

I forgot to mention, I also spend a lot of time on forums like this attempting to learn something new, or relearn something I've forgotten.

Jan 15- about March 15 are my hardest times.  No hunting seasons really and the lakes that are close usually freeze over or at least at the ramps.   I do schedule a trout trip at this time to help break up the boredom.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

I watch my guides freeze when I reel in, aka I don't stop fishing

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Will go through all tackle and reorganize.

Look at all of the magazines I have collected during the year and tear out the interesting articles for my library.

Make an inventory of the tackle I will need to replace for next year and wait for the sales.

Make sure the boat is winterized and ready for next season.

And on a warm day I will try to hit a local pond.

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

I have a spot on my wall, I stare at it and rehearse nursery rymes, while I rock in my chair.

fishing user avatarKritterGitter reply :

In between fixing up and working on stuff around the house (I neglected because I went fishing instead!!) Ill do some hunting and some pickerel fishing. I have yet to see frozen water since I moved here 4 years ago.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Well I read, watch videos, all about bass fishing to refresh and keep my edge sharp. I been gathering my ice fishing tackle up too. I have my tackle room to clean up. I need to clean and lube my used reels.

I'm in the middle of remodeling the new place too. I have one room done.

fishing user avatarTodd2 reply :

I still get out. I literally broke through thin ice last year to catch a few.

no catch and release in the winter for you?

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Normally I chase trout in the mountain streams or spring creeks and bass too as long as the water is still soft.

This year will be a little different as I will be focusing on my classes and do some road cycling to break up the boredom.

fishing user avatarBigBassBarry reply :

I hope to go to a power plant lake at least once and fish!

fishing user avatarInsanity reply :

Thank goodness for the white bass bite during the miscible months here. Cabin fever is something I don't want to catch I try to stay away from northerners in fear of catching it. :D. Hard water sucks I here.

If I'm not killing things things like others. I'd practice pitching at a bucket of water in the garage if nothing else.

Looks like we have plenty of work coming up this winter. Sure hope I can make some extra cash as well. Man I need so much stuff before spring. Had tackle boxes and best rod/reels stolen out my camper a couple years back and I still ain't got enough stuff built up to really enjoy it like I used to. Every time I go all I can think of is man I wish I had this bait or that one back. I'm sure they'd hit it rite now.

Thank goodness white bass fishing only requires cheap curly tails.

fishing user avatartravis23 reply :

Well other than saving for some trips for next year, I'll be changing diapers and hopefully enjoying some good food through the holidays!!

fishing user avatarSudburyBasser reply :

Normally over the winter I go over my gear and clean/repair anything that needs it... except I was bored two weeks ago so I did most of it then.

Go slowly mad... read fishing magazines... go slowly mad.

I have been wanting to do this for a while now Sam, any pointers with regards to organization?

As for the thread. I will fish until right after Christmas and then take a tackle Inventory and re-stock. Clean/lube all my reels,  practice casing , hangout here, and then mid February start fishing.

fishing user avatartgm reply :

I'll walk down to the pond and try a few new baits I will buy with the$ I saved on heating oil.Get out while you can!

I generally dig out all my "stretchy" sweat pants out of the dresser and then give them a thorough washing in preparation for the upcoming holiday eating binges.I will also install a fresh pack of batteries in each of the remotes i find lying around the house in preparation for the long winter football season. Other than that i put a fresh coat of leather cleaner on the recliner and wait till march until i start re-lubing my reels and resorting my tackle bags for new tackle inventory.      Just joking with the top half,i love being outdoors all year.

Indoor Lacrosse?  I thought that was girl's Lacrosse.

Real guys play Lacrosse in New England in the snow, ice, wind, frost and freezing rain and hail. Like UConn plays football.

If you want to improve your basketball skills ask your parents for the Pete Maravich Homework Basketball DVDs and do what Pete says. After all, Pistol Pete was the best, and still is the best, college basketball player in the history of the game. Doubt me? Watch his antics on YouTube and if you can play like Pete you will get a basketball scholarship to a big time school.

Just kidding about the Lacrosse. But serious about the Pete Maravich DVDs.

Good luck with both sports and remember to hit someone over the head in Lacrosse and grab the opponents pants by the end of their pants leg when going for a rebound and dare him to jump for the ball.

Our lacrosse team only graduated one senior last year and he was on our 3 line so hopefully we have a pretty good season...

Sooner, when you fish a hot water lake in the winter you be freezing your fanny off and see the steam rising from the water's surface.

You stick your hand in the water and realize it is warmer than the air temperature.

Can blow your mind.

And the fish can be warm as you unhook them.

I suggest fishing a warm water lake. It is a lot of fun. Bring a camera and the Kodak moments are fantastic.

I love watching me some Pistol Pete.  He was far ahead of his time.

the old school drills help out a ton and I attribute them to my improvement in basketball as well.  Another great drill to learn is the Mikan drill.  Google it and don't think it is only for big men either.  You will learn to use both sides of the rim and both hands to score when near the rim which is huge.  I was able to pretty much shoot with the same success from about 8ft in with both hands.  Makes it very tough on the defender.

And for the rebounding tip you don't need to grab the shorts much just enough to throw them off and think about it next time :)

Our basketball program in our town has been having us do the Mikan drill since 7th grade...

Awesome.  We used to do it and have to see how high up we can hit the backboard on each jump too.  The key to rebounding is always how quickly you can jump consecutive times, well that and positioning.

I attribute this drill to helping me be able to dunk with one step, even being a 5'11 white guy :)

Now you make me want to go shoot around.....guess that is what i will be doing later on today :)

Plyometrics are your friend :)  I can almost guarantee that if you stick to a ploy routine in the offseason you can increase your vertical leap by 4-6".

I didn't even do them because i have been blessed with the ability to jump but i had friends do it and they saw great increases.

Too much work, just buy some moon shoes

I will be pouring plastics, designing baits, hopefully get started with my own Jigs as well. Other than that, working. Waiting for opening day to take vacation time and go to St Clair.

Moon shoes work but the routines with them are really plyo workouts anyways.

fishing user avatarmnbassman23 reply :

Chase around deer and pheasants until the end of the year. Pull out the AR-15 and mow down some yotes this winter. Clean and organize my gear and then reorganize a few more times. Eventually I'll get desperate and go ice fish for a day or two just to feel something tug on a line. Work as much OT as possible so when I'm on my 4th TW order for the winter I don't feel to bad about it...

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

I dabbled in ice fishing the last two years but didn't have fun doing it.  Namely because I don't know what the heck I am doing.  I plan to put my own jigs together but that won't last all winter.  I always struggle this time of year.  I am hoping to be inspired by someone else on this thread.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I'll fish for a couple more weeks yet providing the weather is not miserable. I enjoy the break for a while after I put the boat away. I don't go too stir crazy until after the holidays. But usually by then we have safe ice, so that keeps me occupied for a while. Work is slow on the farm in the winter, but usually we don't go more than a week-10 days without some kind of mutli-day job to do......that is all dependent on weather as well. The time that really bugs me is the period waiting for the ice to melt. Usually it's too wet to work, the ice is unsafe and/or no open water for boating yet. Makes for some pretty long boring days.

fishing user avatarS_Miketa6 reply :

I'll go duck hunting as much as I can and wish I was out on the lake fishing the whole time...

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Do some honey do's around the house, get the reels cleaned, sharpen all of the hooks.  I hate having a big project come along when the weather warms up.

fishing user avatarKyakR reply :

For now, whine about not knowing when the Roadtrip is and whine about my back being out......for later, obsess on Roadtrip, practice casting, go to gym more and learn how to put a reel back together properly after cleaning it

Fish when I can, clean and organize my tackle boxes, clean, lube and re-spool my reels, make jigs and blade baits, restock on soft plastics, etc.

Spend a lot of time playing guitar.

Watch lots of sports on TV, especially Chiefs football and Jayhawks basketball.
