Does hook size matter to fish as long as it doesn't affect lure action?
1. Some very small jigs
2. Profile is more important than "size." That could mean a lot of things, like mass, bulk, movement, etc.
3. It's always bugged me that of all the details we toil over, ALL FISH THAT BITE MUST NOT SEE, OR IGNORE THE HOOKS!!!!!
;D ;D ;D
The bait in my avatar is the smallest crankbait that I make and use.
I've caught hundreds of bass on a 1/16 oz Roadrunner, several in the 6#-7# class.
Just about evey species will take it.
For smallest lure I use, when it is cold out, and I mean, there is ice on the lake, nothing I've ever thrown has ever beat a 1/16 road runner. I was actually crappie fishing the entire time and my lure happened to be chartreuse haha.
1/8 oz SK Bitsy Pond Minnow
Ohhhhhh Mama
I like using the BPS Tourney Special Micro-Light crankbaits. They are 1 3/8" and weigh 1/6 oz. The bass hit them like crazy and so do the bluegills. They are fun to use, obviously on an Ultralight set up.

X2... but I've never hooked into one anywhere that big with one.

Something like this

QuoteRaul, not much to look at.
That 's the same thing I thought the first time I saw it, not much to look at, I purchased a handful and forgot about them for over a year, then one day while rummaging in my T-box looking for something to throw at them after going fishless for the better part of the day I found them in one if the pockets, tied one T-exposed rig with a 1/0 EWG hook and cast it ( had nothing to loose ya know, after throwing everything including the kitchen sink without a bite .... ) and nothing, made some more casts and still nothing, then I re-rigged the bait but now reversed T-expose ( inserting the hook by the pointy end ), made a cast and let it seink to the bottom, it had barely touched the bottom when a fish lifted the bait, to make the story short, from that moment until the end of the day it was almost a fish per cast. The next Monday I went with the guy that sold them and purchased whatever he had left of those ( maybe a pound in 3 or 4 colors ).
QuoteWhat action does it have?
None that I can tell, doesn 't do anything other than sinking away from you and for doing that it has to be rigged by the pointy end with the hook protruding between the head and the body.
How big it is ? as I said, it 's barely big enough to be riiged with a 1/0 EWG hook ans still have a little bit of plastic behind the gap.
How good is it ? Even though I 've caught some nice fish on it it 's mostly a real dink magnet.
Gear: I 've fished it with all sorts of gear, the best results are with ML Fast or less rod & 6-8 lbs YoZuri Hybrid, heavier line kills the "action" of the bait.
Other small stuff I use:
BassAssasin Baby Assasin
Ecogear Grass Minnow S, M, L
Ecogear Bug Ant
Yum Dinger 3"
Nories Escape Jig Twin Flip
Winco's Creek Wacky Worm:

3" stick worm, texas rigged on a 1/0 light wire EWG offset worm hook with as little weight as possible. It's a dink magnet for sure, but every so often it produces a good one too and it almost always will produce some action...even on the slowest days.

X2.
Smallest bait i use is a 3/8hair jig or a regular size crankbait....really dont throw anything smaller than that...!
I took the tail off of a Manns kangaroo worm and stuck it on micro jig head after dropping some Dr. Juice scent on it to try to catch a few bluegills (because the bass where not hitting good) and watched a bass come out from under the drain pipe I was standing on to take that less than 1/2 inch bait. The bass was pushing 4 lbs.
I've caught bass on tiny little 1/32 oz.jigs, but the smallest lures that I target bass with are Rebel Wee Craws in the smallest size. I think they're 1-1/2" long and weigh 1/10 oz. Smallmouth will absolutely hammer 'em, if you can keep 'em away from the bull bluegills
Tom
I'm not a big fan of going small. Now don't get me wrong small baits can catch big fish. I usually don't throw anything smaller than a rage baby craw.
1/8 oz Storm minnow
When it gets warm, and the bite is tough. Nothing beats a fly rod, and a small fly/popping bug, here.
Prety much all I use are small lures anymore. 1/8 oz Strike King cranks are hot for me now.
Last spring I nailed a 5 lb bass on a 2" Senko rigged wacky on an Owner Mosquito hook.
As for "no action" baits, at times they are what's needed. I've been known to rig 2" tail sections of old stick worms on a 1/16 oz ball head jig and crush all species, including crappie, bass and pike.
The biggest load of BS in fishing is "Gotta have big baits to catch big fish"
small rebel minnow or 1/8 oz. husky jerk or floating rapala
I sometimes break out the Rebel Bumble Bug.
Caught Smallies and Picks in Maine with it as well as Largemouth in Florida.
Last month I was getting a few decent ones on a 1/16 oz. Bitsy Bug with a Tiny Paca Chunk
One inch grubs probably. I'm just guessing on the length, but they are small.

Baby Craw, 1/8 oz bullet weight and 1/0 Gamakatsu Offset
Worm Hook or bait hook.
8-)
Like every one I have caught bass on small lures while panfishing, but when targeting bass on small stuff I have caught a lot of fish on a Zoom tiny flukes, and 3" senkos drop shotted. Not just dinks either. Most of my 5+ lb smallmouth have been caught on various 3" inch Gulp baits. And some times every thing in the lake is biting 1/8 oz. spinnerbaits and crankbaits.

Not that brand, normally whatever the local stores have in pearl/white.

Ditto; There was a yearly contest here on who could catch the biggest bass over the season and the prize was a new corvette. The story has it the guy at the boat dock left his rod hang over the side of the boat with one of these snap beans on when the biggest bass ever seen in these waters hit it. He is enjoying the new vette now. Bill
BTW; Hearing about this don't be afraid to drop your sinking baits straight down and hit the bottom and reel it up a tad and get jiggy/twitchey with it. I've done this with success with senko's and sinking jointed rapala's and shad raps. It works.

Second biggest load of bs in fishing is that you cannot catch bass year round on big baits.
Smallest Heddon Torpedo, and size 2 Clousers....
I wacky rig a 4inch senko on a carolina rig for big smallies here in Canada. Works awesome on a slow drag.
Every so often, I'll throw a float n' fly rig with a 1/32 oz. marabou jig. That's about as small as I get though.
The biggest bass of my life 8.35lbs was caught on the small storm subwart in bluegill color.
I've caught many a nice bass on small inline spinners such as roostertails and blue foxes etc. I ALWAYS keep a Terminator inline spinner tied on my UL setup for days when the fish just don't want to bite.
I had a fishing tournament this past weekend and no one got any bites.. the fishing was horrible..
After thinking about it, I wish I would've thrown some smaller baits.. such as roostertails or mr twisters..
Last year I strayed away from my ultralight and small baits in general. It was one of my worst fishing years ever. There were other things I did that contributed to it, such as trying too many different baits too often and losing focus on what I was doing. One of the hottest summers on record didn't help matters either.
Speaking for myself, I clearly saw positive results when I started using smaller baits. It's a technique that's worked well for me. Not everyone will embrace it, just as throwing swimbaits isn't for everyone. Both methods catch fish.
Funny you hardly ever hear anything about Mr. Twisters in a 'serious' forum such as this, as if they're somehow not worthy. They are some fish catching machines.
number five shad rap
The good old Beetle Spin gets tossed every year as a last, last resort.
Love the 1/16oz Bitsy Bug with a small Uncle J's Pork Trailer.
My PB fell to a BPS Finesse Craw w/ a 1/0 EWG and a 1/16oz weight with 8lb line.
Yo-zuri pin minnow caught my biggest bass ever on it, 12 pounds.Trolling it behind the boat with the trolling motor on ,in the middle of the lake, on my ultra light lighting rod ,daiwa spincast with 4# stren.lol I was actually fishing for specs ,and she jumped on it.
I think some of you guys would laugh at some of the ridiculously small baits I use.
YV 37 PEE WEE WART. I have caught numerous bass over 5(1 over 8) on this bait.
