Welcome, almost bought some this weekend. Glad I waited.

fishing user avatarMatt Fly reply :

Welcom aboard Steve, I believe we met at the BassCat Owners Invitational last month.

I want to personally thank you, the baits I got free at registration and the baits you gave us after the meet and greet helped us to a top ten finish.

On day two, 480 boats came to the scales, and only one limit, with your baits exclusively, we weighed the second heaviest bag.

We used the Rage Tail Chunk in the Summer color and the new Pure Posion Chatterbait for every fish we caught.

Welcome aboard, and thanks.

Matt

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Congrats Matt, glad to help out. Sounds like you guys didn't need too much assistance, you slammed 'em.  ;)

On the rage tail shad do you suggest using a worm hook, or like a frog type hook with a screw.  Thanks.

5/0 EWG is my favorite on Shad and Toad. You can rig the Shad with a heavy 5/0 to 6/0 keel weighted (swimbait style) hook and run it as a swimbait too. Run it faster and it will buzz the top as well. Good fishing

I dont know about yall but I love the new rage tails!! I used them this weekend in a tourney on the Savannah River and it was absolutely awesome!! I had a 5+ lb absolutely kill it...and after a great fight threw the hook right before she came aboard!! That would have put me in some good money plus big fish.

I will be getting some of the new Tru-Tungsten Greg Hackney Frog hooks...I heard alot about them on the Bass Feed Podcast...and hopefully it will hang onto that big one next time!!

Great product!! Highly suggest it!!

fishing user avatarjb_adams reply :

Works had me very busy lately so I haven't been here in a while.  Glad to see our sponsors include Rage Tail!

I've seen the video of these in action last fall and I was convinced these would be great baits.  I've already played around with one and I can't seem to get the toad to be consistent with the retrieve.  It's either belly-side up or belly-side down on the retrieve.  Do I need to use a weighted 6/0 hook?  I'm currently using the Zoom horney toad style hooks.

I've got some dark green frogs with a white belly and I've never seen a frog swimming the backstroke before ;), so I want my presentation to look natural.   (haha) Any advice on this?

fishing user avatarJunebug reply :

That's crazy!  My wife went to the bait store for me yesterday and asked the owner what we should try.  He gave her a pack of the watermelon red, Rage Craws and a pack of 3/0 stand-up jig hooks.

Ever since I saw them yesterday, I've been excited about trying them out.  They look AWESOME!

fishing user avatarJunebug reply :

Hey Big-O, could you tell us EXACTLY what combination of jig and rage tail that is in your avatar.  Please include the color and size.  Also, what is the most effective way to fish that combo... THANKS!

It's a homemade lead ball jig with a 60 degree offset parallel eye, 3/8 oz in green pumpkin and reddish brown skirt. Green pumpkin Rage Tail Chunk.

This set up is an all around jig that can be fished in most all types of water. It's a old style stand up jig that I've been using for about 35 yrs. There are alot of companies producing similar jigs but I like different hooks and skirts.

As to info on where and how to fish it, that could take a day or two to explain. If you ck out the other jig fishing threads on this Forum, I'm sure you will get some great info on jig fishing.

Now, go catch some fish and come back and tell us how you did.

My favorite hook is a 5/0 to 6/0 EWG wide gap.  You will notice on the back of the Toad, there is a small depression just ahead of the legs and it is designed for your hook point to rest in and just skin hook slightly in the front of the slot. The chin area of the Toad is also keeled different than the body so that if in fact it lands on it's back on the cast, it will immediately flip upright. Might ck to see if one of the feet are out of position slightly from the packaging etc. and if so, just put it on it's back on an aluminum cookie sheet in 170 degree oven for about 10 min.'s  Won't hurt if you leave it for 20 minutes. Alot of people use hot water to reform baits but I like this better.

Try it out and let me know how you do. Good fishing,

Steve

jb_adams,

I was using a 1/32 ounce flutter hook this weekend. It didnt really make a difference, it would still do its job right side up or upside down. I got bites and hook ups with it running both ways. I read about the new Tru-Tungsten Greg Hackney Frog hook and Ill be giving that a try this weekend at Weiss Lake in AL. Its a double hook like the spro frog but it was designed for the rage tail and horny toad type baits. Either way the rage tail is an awesome bait.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

I use a 5/0 to 6/0 EWG wide gap hook and it rights itself immediately in the case it lands on it's back on cast. Let me know how it works for you. Might ck to see if packaging caused one of the feet to be out on position slightly. If this is the case, can reform in hot water or in an oven on it's back at 170 degree for a few minutes.

Just bought some Rage Tail "Rage Toads". They look awesome. The legs seem to have a different feel than the rest of the body. I'm sure these will land me some bigguns. Thanks Big O.

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Thanks AJ, if they have the small tabs holding the fllippers to the legs, be sure to detach them before using. Those are there to help maintain the shape etc. during packaging. Good fishing and keep in touch

I used a rage tail craw in the summer craw with a matching jig this morning.  Got a 4, a 3, a 1, and a 5lb catfish.  That was the only jig of that color that I had and that stupid catfish bent my hook.  It was time to get off the water anyway because of the wind.  But this is the second trip I've that I've been on using rage tail lures and both times they paid off.  These things work.

Thanks for sponsoring the site and welcome, though it's a bit late for welcomes lol

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Never too late for welcome, and glad your gettin in to em. Also too bad about the catfish, they have done me in several times as well. One night Brian, happened to be one of the best nights I've ever had, we were on a main lake point running the Rage Shad in 8 ft water over the mossbeds and were averaging fish over 6 lbs, just one of those magic times when the fish are ON and lik'in what your feed'in em. Suddenly my buddy gets slammed and it was so loud it sounded like an alligator thrashed on it. He set the hook and the fight was on. Lasted 25 minutes, and 2 beers later he pulled it up beside the boat and it was a Blue Cat that had to weigh 60 lbs or so. Never saw a fight like that before or since on a little soft plastic 3 1/2" topwater bait. But I wouild like to see it again. That was hilarious watching him try to control that beast on his 6 1/2 ' med action spinning gear. Was using 50lb braid. BTW, it  totally screwed the moss bed we were slammin the bigger bass on, and this was the only one that we could fish because of 35 mile per hr winds on the rest of the lake. Again thanks

Big O, I did watch a Shawn Grisby Show and he was fishing the Rage Tail Shad and the Frog and then they went to flippin tha Rage Craw. And they were fishing them on the Grisby HP hook in a 4/0 size. have you ever fished this hook on the Rage Tails? Or should I go with the EWG 5/0 or the 6/0?

Dan

fishing user avatarBig-O reply :

Big Dan, On the Shad and Toad you should definitely stay with 5/0 and 6/0 EWG hooks due to several reasons in my opinion. The most obvious is bigger hook is more effective on hook sets providing it doesn't interfere with the baits action. On Rage Tail Shad and Toad, they were designed around those hooks. My favorite being 5/0 EWG superline hooks. Also since many of today's serious anglers use braid on frog type topwaters, to drive the hook better on set, the bigger hooks have become more prevalent. Even with big keel weighted hooks, the Shad can be run on top easily because it has more resistance than others and moves so much water.  Plus with big keel weight hooks you can swimbait the Rage Shad. I didn't design it for that but many good reports coming back on it. I learn something every day. Hope that clarifies things for you, Good Fishing
