The biggest bass on the lightest line you caught! What bait? 2024

fishing user avatarjunebugmn reply :

Just thought i'd "throw" this out there :D I know I live up "north" and the "toad's" don't get as big as the one's down there, but there are some pretty decent bass up here in wisconsin and minnesota. My best was a 23.5 incher caught on a black zoom u-tail 6in worm in 14ft of water :o The rod was a custom made g-loomis imx 8400 hsr, 6lb trilene xt and a symetry 1500 reel, it would be cool to see what other's have caught too! fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

5-4 smallie on 4# Trilene XL, back in the 90s.  bait was a live softshell on a split shot rig.  Last year, I caught a 5-0 smallie using 15# braid, and 4# CFX leader.  Drop shot 4" Power Worm in your favorite color was the bait.

I'm trying to think of some light line largemouth, but none stick out in my memory, though I'm sure I've had a few decent fish in the mix.

3.5lb small mouth on 6lb spider wire using live minnows, I was fishing at Tyler, TX for crappies.

6 pounds LMB

Line.- Trilene XL 4 lbs test

Lure .- Mepps Black Fury 00 size ( yeah, I don 't think they make those anymore )

Rod.- Shimano Clarus CSS56ULA

Reel.- Shimano Sedona 1000

Nope, I was not fishing for LMB, I was panfishing.

caught using #4 Yo-Zuri Hybrid.

4 1/4 pound spot on 6 pound line using a dropshot. I'm more of a heavier line guy on everything else, but when using spinning gear, all I use is 6 pound.

fishing user avatarBass_Akwards reply :

Ha!  RW that's freaking awesome sir!

I always loved the stunning looking fish in your avitar.  It's so sweet that such a huge percentage of the time you see hippo bass like that, the angler caught them on 10# test or bigger.  Yet there you are, out on your lake where you can potentially land a world record SMB, and your hucking 4# test Yo Zuri Hybrid line. I love it.

It's a true testament to your love of the sport and your prowess as an angler.

As for me, I caught an 7.4 pound bass at El Salto with a C-Rigged Zoom SS+ (I think) Lizard.  I dipped the tail in Chartreuse Garlic dip and fished the lizard as fast as you can fish a C-rig.  My line was Yo Zuri Hybrid 8#.  Not that impressive I know, but I'll take it.

I was crappie fishing and caught a 5 1/2 lb LMB on 4# uncle bucks crappie line from BPS and a 5' ultralight!  :) I got another that was just shy of 5 on another day. BTW, I have pulled 2 small X-mas trees off of the bottom of the lake by hand, trying to snap off my jig using that line! :D

why isn't that 19.3 in the top 25 biggest bass caught  :-?

fishing user avatarSkeetyCCTX reply :

I have caught countless bass 8 lbs and up on 12 lb flourocarbon line, on lakes with heavy duty cover!

I live inbetween Choke Canyon and Falcon which are in south TX and probably the two hottest bass lakes in the nation at the present time.  Choke Canyon is stuffed with thick hydrilla, which bass love to burry in.  Falcon, does not have drilla, but every square inch contains flooded brush, especially with the high lake levels!  On these lakes, you can get broke off with 50 lb braid by a 2 lb bass when they burry themselves in grass or wrapp you up in brush!

Now, one of my favorite methods of fishing these lakes, especially while fish are spawning or in pre-spawn mood, is with a weightless senko!  I like to hook it wacky style!  I have caught some very hefty sacks with this technique!

However, I am a firm believer that line choice is critical for fishing weightless senkos!  I have had many days where partners of mine watched me catch fish all day without getting a bite of their own, throwing the same senko as me in the same places.  Why, because they were using the wrong line!

I believe that 12 lb flourocarbon is the best line to fish this lure with because it generates the right amount of sink for the lure!  Heavier flourocarbon or monofiliment lines just do not get the lure down into the usual strike zone area quick enough!  Braided line, in my opinion; is the worst line possible to use for this cause it floats so much!  Light flourocarbon is just the way to go and I have found that 12 lb generate the most strike day in and day out.  It matters!

Now, when you are flipping and pitching around heavy cover on big bass lakes in south TX with only 12 lb test line, be prepared to get your butt kicked at some point.  However, you can greatly reduce breakoffs by taken some steps ahead of time.  1st, make sure to flip with a med. heavy stick so that you will have the power to turn fish the way you want them to go.  2nd, make sure to carefully inspect line for any abrasions and tie good knots!  12 lb will hold a good fish but not if it has bad spots.  3rd, try to keep cast closer to the boat when around heavy cover so you dont have such a long way back in!  4th, get fish up and to the boat as quick as possible.  12 lb test will hold a very big fish as long as it is just the fish.  When in heavy cover I set my drag very tight and dont play them at all.  Its the brush and cover that break you, not the fish!  Last, dont cast into an area untill you have a game plan for getting the fish out!  Before each flip I always check to see if I can get the fish out and which is the best way to turn them!

Now, I do break fish off from time to time, but it is always due to the cover, or bad line!

Recently, I found a new "heavier" flourocarbon line that I can use in sustitute of the 12 lb.  I have began using 15 lb Seager Red Label and am very impressed.  The diameter of this line is very small and only .01 bigger than most leading 12 lb test of other brands.  So, basically I am getting 3 lbs of extra security without hardley changing the rate of sink.  I have not noticed a decrease in bites, but I have noticed that I am able to be way more aggressive and confident.  This is super good line and it has a much higher breaking strength than what is listed on the box.  I have even began using it on my TX-Rig rod that usually gets 17-20 lb test!  Why not, if you can go smaller than it will get you more bites!

Good Luck!

5.5 lb northern (yes I know it's not a bass) on 2lb mono using a mini-mite crappie jig and a 5 ft ultralight pole.

4lb LMB on 2lb line with live night crawlers (an incredibly fun way to catch bass on the weekend is just floating those fat worms underneath slip bobbers).

why isn't that 19.3 in the top 25 biggest bass caught :-?

Fair question; just sent off a reminder to Ken Duke @ B.A.S.S. They never recognized my 18.6 (18 Lb 11 oz) back in '81 and didn't add my 19.3. Butch Brown's 19.3, caught from Castaic Lagoon last year (on video) is also missing.

Butch may not have to sent his catch to BASS, I didn't send my info until last year, when several people questioned my catch on sites like this. It's frustrating, just need to wait and see how Ken (BASS) responds.

last year i caught my biggest bass 9 pd. with 10pd line i didnt hardly use the drag i just released the line.i caught it with a bobber and big bream. 8-)

fishing user avatarbrushhoggin reply :

5.13 8 pound vanish on a med spinning rod. a healthy head shake from a fish that weighs 5.13 exceeds the weight of the fish, and probably line test too, its all about proper drag settings. i caught a 35 pound catfish on 6 pound test at the spillway here several years ago. now that was ridiculous

7lb largemouth on #8 Ande (clear mono). Live bull minnow.

Ultralight setup.

Fenwick ultralight rod.

4 pound fluoro line.

2-inch white grub.

1/64 ounce jig head (used in fly fishing).

Along the bank at my feet while reeling in.

Still don't know who was more surprised, me or the bass.

And the best news is that she is still in that pond!!!

I am going to fish that pond this Friday morning before my client meeting.  :)
