It's time to build The Ark...

The Mississippi River is 2' above flood stage at Memphis. All of the dams on the Tennessee River are

spilling, the ponds are full and the water is universally cold chocolate milk.  Over the next several days

and through the weekend the entire region is expecting another 6"-12" of rain and as the storms move

into the Ohio River Valley another surge of water will be pushed south into the Mississippi. There is no

relief in sight and spring rains are just around the corner.

I wonder how prone the Tennessee river is to flooding . The classic is coming up .  Is there a back-up site ?

I feel for ya, brother. 1993 taught me a lesson. I moved inland a mile ... and up 40 feet. Hope everyone comes out OK.   jj

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Watch out for the smaller tributaries.  When the rivers backfill into them those creeks, and small rivers can rise very fast.

fishing user avatarsoflabasser reply :

Looks like there will be lots of bad weather coming this week or the next for many northern states according to the weather reports. At least you do not have to worry about low water conditions like many Western states have.

We've already got the ark up here. Maybe we're not as crazy as some of you thought we were. We won't be allowing any Tennessee fans on it.

fishing user avatarTennessee Boy reply :

I don't see the appeal of building an Ark.  There's no place to mount a trolling motor?

Thanks to FDR it is impossible. Well unless a dam breaks . Tva said that most lakes will be at summer pool by the end of this month, which on some lakes means plus 30 feet from their current levels . Tributary lakes are built only to store flood waters. For instance the two lakes above the Knoxville (Douglas and Cherokee) will hold back water when it starts raining heavily (seems backwards I know). They can rise several feet per day but it prevents flooding downstream. Historically Chattanooga flooded several times a year before TVA. We get almost as much rain as Seattle

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Lived in Canton, Mo. for a year right on the Mississippi.  They had big flood gates they closed to save the town from flooding.  Serious stuff every spring.

Going to be interesting...have a tourney Saturday on Cherokee!!!  Side note....being from the west coast I remember the rain and gloom …..ewwwwwwww.  Believe east Tennessee receives on average about ten more inches than Northern Oregon according to my friend out there.

Norris is up 12 feet in the last 2 weeks and with the rain forcast for the rest of the week, I'd bet it will be up another 5 feet by the end of the weekend. Leaving us about 4 feet from summer pool.

Cherokee has come up 8 feet in the last 2 weeks, however it is still 3 feet lower than it was this year at the same time.

It's gonna be muddy, hopefully you can find some water a little clearer than the rest. Good luck!!

We just tend to get it all at once all winter long!

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Rain has stopped for now, but the next system arrives tomorrow afternoon.

We are expecting another 5"-6".

fishing user avatarCharlieTN reply :

I live on Watts Bar and they’ve kept it at winter level by dumping water as fast as they can.

One issue that complicates maters is that the ground is absolutely saturated so any rainfall has nowhere to go but to run off.  I don’t doubt a bit that Watts Bar will be raised to close to normal summer level pretty quickly by this weekend.

It is certainly going to be interesting to say the least.  If you have seen any flooding in the past in a particular area, it WILL BE flooded again by the end of this weekend.

Everyone stay safe and slow down driving.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

So sorry to hear that! We're not able to wet a line either......still have about 6" ice on all the water. Spring floods are predicted to be bad as well up here. Wish you the best.

fishing user avatarTnRiver46 reply :

Ah we will be fine, weather men are full of drama

fishing user avatarTriCityBassin' reply :

Central Virginia ain't no better!

all the creeks and rivers are raging.  stops raining today but blows +30.  Starts raining again tomorrow.  I have no idea how to adjust.  Since the winter of 2017-2018 the amount of rain we have gotten is un heard of.  I didn't even fish for a spotted bass last year and only for smallies 1/2 times.

The trees started budding 2 weeks ago, birds started returning and I have not been on the water in 15 days because of rain.  I'm starting to feel like I am going to miss my big fish window AGAIN for the 2nd year in a row.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Knoxville flooding is making national news. The Classic is still a few weeks away,

but more rain is in the forecast.

One of my favorite river launches, just off Wheeler Lake. The pile of brush in the center of the picture was the dock.  Yet there are still 1,000 posts on Facebook groups asking how the lake is.  It's flooded.  Dont fish.

Wow! And I thought we were getting a lot of rain in Virginia. Nothing like you are seeing. Be safe. Stay home. Wait it out.

fishing user avatarTnRiver46 reply :

Yeah it was a lot worse than I thought it would be! I think Pickwick dam was pumping 550,000 cfs or something crazy

fishing user avatarTnRiver46 reply :

Looks like the Tennessee river in Knoxville started dropping at 7 pm last night. My boss said in 1994 he was taking catfish out of his yard and throwing back into the river, according to him this was far less severe but he said his dock was underwater a few inches yesterday. He's always trying to collect driftwood and sell it haha

fishing user avatarBassNJake reply :

Looks like Cherokee is up 14 ft from my screen shot last Wed.

Norris is 7 feet over full pool

Yes thankfully Cherokee and Douglas still have room. Almost everything else got topped off . I had buddies catching trout in gin clear water right below Cherokee dam yesterday but they are pumping water now. Cherokee is predicted to start dropping in 3 days, I'm guessing they will open up the gates

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Hey guys, it is worse than I figured in Richmond, VA.

TriCitiesBassin' post is correct. Check out this post for Monday, February 25th, 10 months till Christmas.

The Historic James River is about to reach a level not seen in nearly a decade. Get yourself down to the water's edge!

We have a 500 year flood every six years in East Tennessee haha. I think they should look into their classification system

I’m going down to Chick Next weekend and I’m hoping it calms down some by then. I don’t care if it’s up 8 feet as long as we can get out and the bass are biting.

10-4. Thanks for the info buddy. My fishing buddy that I’m going down with has some friends there right now. He said they have been whackin them and even put one over 8 in the boat yesterday but today there was so much junk that they were afraid to run anywhere. Hope it clears out some by next weekend.
