I have never counted my fish until now and so far im up to 45 on the year of all species
i know some guys only count big ones or only take down wait or only do PB ... but has anyone ever counted how many fish total ? if so what is your record #
I do a 2 week trip for prespawn smallmouth and largemouth every year and I have averaged over 1000 fish during that two week span in each of the last 5 years. Outside of that trip, I don't keep track.
No, have a hard time remembering how many I caught my last outing.
I do remember catching 18 DD bass in a hour or so back in 1991, that is by far my best day.
Tom
Man, thats a hard one . I've only been four times this year and estimate I caught 120 to 150 . Its not unreasonable that I have caught 1000 to 1500 in a year .
I've kept detailed records since 1972 of every trip, including total number, total above minimum size limit, total below minimum size limit, & largest.
I've had over 4 dozen 100+ days ????

Last year my time on the water was greatly limited but for what ever reason I was on big fish all year starting with a personal best back in February of 12 lbs. 8 oz. I think it was a combination of limited time on the water and the fact Toledo Bend was 15' low for almost a year before returning to normal. My limited time on the water had me relaxed and concentrating harder while the low water concentrated the big bass.

100 or more fish a day were common when I fished Lake Guerrero, El Sombrerito and San Lorenzo back in the 80s, 3-4 lbers wre seen as "trash" since they interrupted the hunt for the big mommas.
This thread has me depressed already.
I kept track one year of bass only (black bass species). It was a really hot summer that I spent most of July and August fishing on the rivers for catfish or bowfishing but I still managed 2,776 bass that year. It depends a lot on where I fish. I can go to some local lakes and easy catch 50+ fish a day with nothing over 3 pounds. I'm to the point anymore that I'd rather catch 10-20 with a good average size and a few big ones mixed in so my numbers probably wouldn't be that high this year.
Yikes ! I need to step my game up ????

18 DD bass in an hour?!?!?! I would have died of dehydration in my boat, from the excessive amount of tears of joy streaming down my face.
I made a goal to catch and photo document a bass for every week this year. Thought process was I could counter the "make your own" photo calendar of my niece and nephew my mother receives for Christmas with a calendar of pictures consisting of me holding fish.
Made it the first 3 weeks of January, but failed to produce the next 2 weeks with temps in the teens.
Have only missed 3 weeks so far, can't imagine the effort and dedication needed to capture some of the data above.
On a good day I can’t even keep track of how many I catch. Fishing like most hobbies is all up to you in the tracking. I prefer to not dwell on the past and only think about catching the next one. Some people keep detailed logs and that’s ok to. I think whatever makes you happy and allows you to have fun is the way to go.
I caught 204 striped bass in one trip last December, just because I could:
I don't think I've ever caught more than 10 in a single day. 50+ a day sounds like something I would dream.
you mean even dinks?
i only keep count of fish over 2 lbs.
I fish lakes with lots of bass . I use to go often and stay late . A forty bass day is not that much if dinks are counted and one stays at it for 8 to 10 hours . Then there are those occasional 70 to 100 fish days .

Wait a minute. Make sure I’m still fluent in English as well as weight and measures and the standard figure of 60 minutes in an hour.
you caught 18 double digit bass in 60 minutes?
Im not sure I have a response for that type of day....I don’t
I live in South Florida where we have a extremely healthy population of native Florida strain largemouth bass and where many people have had +100 bass days. My current record for most bass caught in 1 day is 149 bass that I caught from land in public waters in less than 6 hours of fishing. Could of surpassed 200 bass in 1 day if I wanted to but it is hard for me to just focus on bass when I have so much variety to choose from in South Florida. Might consider breaking this record when the conditions are right. Have had other +100 bass days and its nothing special to catch +20 bass in a regular day of fishing in many locations I fish. Probably have caught 1000's of bass in the years I have fished South Florida but have lost count of the exact number a long time ago.

There was a time when i kept a log of every fish i caught, the bait, conditions, etc. niw i just keep a tab on bass 18in. or bigger. I’ve been averaging around six a week since May 1st. If i can keep up that pace i won’t break 100 for the season, but you wont hear me complaining. ????
I can honestly say I’ve never kept count of how many fish I’ve caught for a year. Unless it’s something I’m eating with a limit like crappie or walleye I don’t even keep up with how many I’ve caught in a single day.
I can’t say how many I have caught in a year but I know I have had plenty 30-100 fish days already this year. Pre spawn was crazy for the smallies this year on Lake Erie and the other inland lakes I fish. If I had to guess a years worth I’m sure it’s in the 1000s

I fished Guerrero in the 70's a few times, pheonimal bass fishing back then very aggressive bass that had teeth and tore up your thumb. Red Stembridge Fliptails 8" worms, went through 100 bags every day!

I keep a detailed log on all the fish I catch on my home lake, I fish it 50 plus times a year. I figure since I fish it so often, keeping detailed records will be helpful. I also enjoy looking back and comparing years. However, when I am on vacation or fishing a different body of water, I'll pay attention to how many I catch, but I don't document it.
That said, my best year was 2016, when I caught 1552 bass (averaged 26 per trip) on my home lake. However, as of July 7th, I have caught 920 bass this year (36 per trip), so unless something weird happens over the next 6 months, 2018 may be the banner year. Ironically, 2017 was one of my slowest years with 875 fish (19 per trip).
I keep a little log on my phone. I keep track of all fish not just bass. Wanted to break 1,000 last year but final tally was 765.
So far this year, tally is 410. Weather and work have hindered my outings.
Best bass day for me was 27 in 3 hours 2 years ago. They were chasing schooling Shad in a cove in October and it was beautiful.

I'm a CPA. I have a strict policy not to count unless someone pays me. In fact, its probably an ethics violation.

Tom,
18 in an hour is really an impressive physical feat. I'm sure i couldn't do that even if the school was there and biting.
Heck, i don't even think i could be your net man at that rate.

That is quite impressive fishing. I could dig up some notes and logs from over the years river fishing for smallies and put some numbers up there in the 100's for the season. I counted dinks, runts and respectable bass. Logged time, temps., baits, water conditions, blah blah blah. Was fun to do but I just got away from it. I think I missed opportunities for bigger fish with my older fishing style.
I fish a bit differently these days. I'd like to think I'm fishing for bigger smallmouth or largemouths these days.
I don't have the best bass resources at my fingertips. I just make the best of what I have.

I fish the lower Housatonic River in Connecticut during the winter. Stripers always hold over in it.
I didn't realize there was a season. We renew our licenses on Aug 1 is the closest definition to a season I guess. We fish year round, there are days that you don't catch anything and others you catch 25+. I would estimate normally I catch 1 or 2 a year that are 5+, 10 that are 3-5, and a whole lot that are 3 and under.
I haven't counted. It's just never as many as last year
I caught 300 + fish in a month several times the one year I kept records. But it was multi-species. If I remember correctly, I caught over 3000 fish that year.
Im sure Ive caught 2-300 hundred bass per year the last 10 years or so.
I fish about 3-5 hours at a time, 30-50 days/year. Compared to most around here, that's not very much. I also don't fish many waters known for large fish, as those tend to more popular (both for anglers and recreational boaters)...but I prioritize solitude when I go out to fish. On top of that, there is a variety of different kinds of waters near me -- natural lakes, impoundments, small streams, larger rivers, swampy river bayous and backwaters, gravel pits....they vary widely in numbers of bass, predominant species (LM vs.SM), average size, fertility, forage species, competitor predator species...so where I choose to fish, and how often, has a large effect on how many I catch. Also, some years I have a lot of days to spare for fishing, others I don't.
So in the end, overall numbers of fish don't tell me much: if I caught more this year than last, is it because I'm improving as an angler? Or becauseI fished more? Or did I just fish more productive waters?
So I keep track of several metrics to gauge how I'm doing in each body of water I fish:
--number of bass caught per hour of fishing in each body of water
--average bass length in each body of water
--number of keeper sized bass (14" and up) caught per hour in each body of water.
--weight of my largest bass in in each body of water
Generally, if I'm improving (rather than backsliding) on 2 or more of these metrics, on average across all the waters I fish compared to last year, I feel like I'm achieving something.

Huh? Is there such a body of water that you can catch and land a 10+lb bass every 3 or so minutes 18 times in a row? That's 200lbs of bass.

It's rare but it has happened a few times. Castaic in the early 90's was at it's peak big bass/giant bass population and occasionally a wolf pack of big bass would coral schools of planted rainbow trout up against structure and I was lucky to be at the right place at the right time with the right lure and tackle to take advantage.
Matt Neuman (Irod owner) had a similar catch at lake Casitas a decade later, Matt had several witnesses (via cell phone) I only have my boat partner, different lake that also peaked in the early 2000's.

Yes there are places like that, Sugar Lake in Mexico, right across the border from McAllen, TX, was such a place a few years ago, a 50 lb stringer in a tournament didn't take you anywhere.
This scene from Billy Madison popped into my head as I read through this thread.
Jeez! I need to retire and go fishing more.

I'd say it is the lake more than me, although you do need to know some tricks in order to get a bait in front of them consistently. When I first started fishing here, 10 fish was a real good day for me because I didn't know how many fish I was passing by.

Some years I track, some years I don't. This year I'm not, but based on some past records, an average year for me would be about 1,000 bass, another 1,000 crappie, and 500 misc. fish (2500 total). My recent best year was 2011 when I landed 2,305 bass along with another ~2500 non-bass for close to 5,000 fish total. That 2011 bass total was 82 trips totaling 260 hrs. The only stat I know for this year is having caught multiple open water bass so far in every month, including Jan and Feb, which often isn't a possibility being this far north.
One Gajillion! ???? I won.
In south Florida we have no off season. Many fish almost every day, and catch thousands of fish every year. During the dry season when water levels drop, and fish concentrate 100 bass in a half day is a real possibility, and often happens. Its why I moved here 45 years ago.
After about 10 fish, I start losing interest in numbers and more on quality. I'd rather catch four 4lbers than 8 2lbers.
That being said, 1000 fish a season would be 18 fish a week, or about 2-3 per day. Maybe when I was a kid and I could pond hop weekdays after school. Nowadays, gotta work!
When I lived, fished and guided in so. Fl I rarely told how many bass we would catch in big cypress or the everglades because it would seem unbelievable in other parts of the country. One dry year in Big Cypress throwing a 3/4 oz. gold rattling rapala over 100lbs in 20 consecutive casts. That was the best day I remember - if the water was high things got tough real quick.

Yes many would have a problem believing that, but us that fish the glades often know its a fact. Concentrated bass can make fishing crazy at times, with big numbers, and big bass mixed in with the masses. Thumbs torn up, and bass on almost every cast can last for hours, its not all year long but almost every March April and May.

The most fish I caught in one day was 65 Smallmouth Bass. That was on a charter boat trip my Dad and I were on. Our guide really had us on the fish that day.
I started keeping fishing logs (Fish type and numbers, bait used) once I got a smart phone. My goal each year is to catch 365 fish. Last year was the first year I missed that goal since I started logging catches. This year I am over halfway to my goal.

Spring time is a great time for someone to catch +100 bass in a day when the water level is low. I also caught more or less the same amount of sunfish, Oscar, bowfin, and gar the day I caught 149 bass so there was a good chance I caught over 300 fish in less than 6 hours of fishing that day. Did not count those extra fish and only wrote down the bass on a piece of paper. Bass still bite very good during the summer time, you just have to find where they are hiding in and fish at night on very hot days.I don't blame the northerners and westerners for visiting South Florida since we have the best overall fishing opportunities in the USA.
I've had days where a bass is caught on about every cast . It seems like every fish in the lake is squeezed into one small area . One day in the late fall I predicted bass would be in the back of creeks . Thing is , the first two creeks zero but the third creek it was every cast . Even if a fish came off another would be on in a second .
