I am a member of an outdoors club that contains 3 nice size ponds full of bass and I have a small jon boat, but I usually do most of my fishing from shore. I am trying to find an effective mosquito repellant. Also I'm not talking about that industrial strength, chemical burn your skin, type of repellant.
Off works for me. You just have to remember to bring it which I can't seem to do.
I like the Cutter Outdoorsman with Deet that they sell at my local Walmart, but it's kinda oily and will leave slight oil stains on your clothes, so it's best to have a fishing shirt if you're going to use the stuff. Works great for deer flies.
I don't get bitten too often for some reason, but my kids get devoured when we go out. Avon Skin So Soft works very well, isn't dangerous to kids (Deet), and smells nice. Have your wife or girlfriend pick a bottle up.
I use 100% deet that I get at walmart some times it works some times it don't like the skeeters here on military posts at least at ft drum seem to like the stuff for an appitizer befor laying into me. But it seems to work at home when fishing.
I use Maxi-deet from Dick's, it works pretty well for me
Since my deer archery days I use only 100% Deet but apply it sparingly as needed (focus on active ingredients not brand).

Thermacell is the best thing on the market. This time of year I don't go fishing in the evening without it. The best thing is you don't have to put anything on your skin.
Off with Deet in it. I got ate up a week ago,Spray that OFF on and they stayed away. I always have a can in my back pack.It stays in it's own pocket I have just for that.
I seen guys get to a spot then right away leave because it was so bad.
Try to keep it away from lures though, even though I never put it to test, but people have told me It turns fish away from your lures as well.Fish don't like the stuff either.

It gets my vote too.

x3 thats what all the Cajuns were using at the fish camp last weekend. supposed to deter horse flies too.
Thermacell do work well...if its real windy not so much. I wont go hunting with out one..I don't usually get bit up on the boat so no need for me to use while fishing.
If it's real windy, mosquitos shouldn't be too much of an issue anyway...
At trolling motor speeds is the thermacell effective?
Eat garlic! That'll 'lic up yer blood and give you a case of the skunk farts. Rub some Megastrike Garlic on your skin too. jk.
Other than that I use Off.
I use either Cutter's or Deep Woods Off lotion, not the spray.

Problem around here isn't the mosquitoes, it's the gnats. The only thing I've found that works half decent for both is that Cutter Advanced spray stuff.
I appreciate all the quick replies and I'll decide on one of the many options that are available
When duck hunting or fishing at night in South Florida I use 3M's Ultrathon repellent and Thermacell. I put the thermacell within arms reach and upwind of me and apply 3M Ultrathon to exposed skin.

For Gnats try vanilla extract....works great for me.
ultathon is awesome stuff have been using it for a couple years now and really like it.
Thermacell is great. Just light them off before you are covered up in skeeters. I keep 2 in my john boat. Works great trolling around. As mentioned earlier wind will move away the protection, and the mosquitos.
Rob YMMV

But on shore (or in a moving boat), if you move 3' away, your protection is gone. It has to re-build it's repellency shield around you while you are stationary, once you stop moving. And it has no effectiveness against ticks.
I've been experimenting with these things (clip-ons) the past couple of weeks in mosquito infested backwaters (fishing from shore), so what I'm telling you is true - based on my experience only, of course! 100% Deet (lotion) is the only scientifically proven personal mosquito repellent on the market, that works. Put on your socks and legs, it effectively repels ticks as well. The whole clip-on idea is great, but it has it's limitations.
Agreed
If you are moving, the thermacell isn't for you. But bank fishing or hunting out of a blind it is very effective with minimal winds.
100% deet is great as long as it doesn't cause four eyeballs in your offspring.... Then again, what better to see you with
I like the thermacell I havent found anything better and I havent had any trouble at trolling speeds
From what im reading, 100% Deet Lotion is the way to go, correct? Might have to grab some

Supposedly Bass absoluely detest Deet and can detect it in very small concentrations......
not to sound weird but i use skin so soft from avon you can get a huge bottle for like $10 and i just pour it in a small spray bottle
ive been using sawyers permethrin for clothing from dicks for the last 5 or 6 years and havent had a eick or misquito bother me even once just follow the directions on the can and you cant go wrong
When I'm wading in the river, I light a cigar. It repels a lot of mosquitoes. I try to avoid deet. I think there's something to the argument that it repels fish too.

The Cigar also insures that you will have the stretch of river you are fishing all to yourself. P.U.
Thermacell you don't have anything on you so you don't have anything on your hands, lure or line

I just caught over 60 bass the other day with DEET sprayed all over me.
Deet is the best, period. I personally tested it for a week in Alaska's mosquito infested tundra. Trust me, they won't land on you (but they'll buzz very closely). Of course, you have to apply it on EVERYTHING (don't forget your head) for it to work.
2nd best: Repel.
I haven't tried thermacell, but I understand it works very well.
Use Amway bug spray, stand on your cap bill and spray the bottom of your pants and your hat not on your skin. This stuff is amazing.
Might sound kinda weird but windex works if your in a pinch and have nothing else. It works about as good as off deep woods stuff and you have to also reapply it eventually like you do off.
do dryer sheets really work? i read that here in a similar thread a couple years ago...someone said rub the dryer sheet on you and then put it under your hat or stick it in a shirt pocket...
