Everyone has done this (I'm guilty) . Holding the 4 pound chunk way too close to the cell phone camera, hiding hands fingers. And shout "WHOO SoN" click click click and viola. LUNKER. what do Yall think about this little trick.I know I call out my buddies When they try to pull a fish story.

Taking a picture of a fish anyway you want doesn't bother me. But lying does forsure.however manipulation for undeserved credit isn't practicing good morals. In the scheme of things some fisherman are doing way way worse things then taking misleading pictures.

The Gopro's wide angle lens makes a fish held close to your body look 1/2 the size haha. Caught a 6.5 on video and went to pull still images from it that night, the fish looked like a 2.5. No big deal

I like to think there is a happy middle ground with fish pics. If your arm is 100% extended and /or you try and push the fish off as larger than it is, then shame on you. However, if you caught a nice fish and just want it to look like a nice fish in the pic, I have no problem with doing what you can to make the shot look good. Certainly things like lighting, angles, holding the fish a little bit in front of you, etc., can all make the difference between a good pic and just another fish pic. For me, the worst fish pics are on the extreme ends of the spectrum - either holding it out as far as possible and close to the camera, or trying those selfies where the fish ends up behind you or tucked tight to your belly so it makes a 5 lber. look like a 2.5 compared to your body size. After all, we take fish pics to show off the fish, not the scenery, background or necessarily the angler holding the fish

If you hold a 2-pounder close to a GoPro, then it looks like an 8-pounder. Look no further than on some of the more popular YouTube bass channels to see what I mean. It's ridiculous. LOL!
Guys, nobody can really tell how big a fish is just by a picture, no matter how close or far it is from the camera, no matter the camera angle, no matter what kind of camera. Don't believe me? I have proof.
The "Guess the weight" contests receive thousands of guesses, over 10,000 each. But every time...EVERY time, less than 100 people get it right. Yup, less than 1%!!
I'll be posting a thorough article with facts and figures in the future on this, but wanted to lend a little insight here.

Yup. Thats why i got a scale. Id rather be honest than deceiving, makes that elusive 5lb bass all the more bigger when i finally catch her! I dont fish to brag, k fish because i enjoy it.

I'm just saying I've taken pics that made some fish look bigger. not necessarily intentional. But truth is the closer the fish is to the lense the better the picture will be. I'm not poor, nor fooling myself. Ive caught plenty of nice ones so I don't need to. I'm just saying it happens. when i'm snapping a couple pics of my catch i'm usually so pumped i don't even think about any positioning or anything....
i'd say about 95% of my pictures are useless anyways because i have some turd looking smile/smirk on my face....

Way i see it you can do it to show the fish better or to make a fish look bigger. The one who do the latter and hide their hands to make it look bigger and brag should realize that yeah ur hands arent showing but you can see individual scales etc... on the fish. Idc either way....

Exactly. If I catch a nice fish and I decide to take the time to photograph it, I try to make it a good picture. But when someone sees the picture and ask me how much it weighed, I tell them the truth.

The editor in cheif at that very popular fishing magazine/show is the worst, but i think part of his reason is to make it look good on film or a photo, i dont think he does it just to make them look bigger... well maybe a little bit...

If you hold a fish tight to your body, it looks smaller than it was. If you hold it with a straight arm, it looks obnoxiously large and fake. I shoot for somewhere in between, so the fish is clearly the focus of the picture, but not the only thing you see. My profile pic on here shows what I'm talking about. I've got A 4.5 on the left and a 3 on the right, and that's about what you might guess from the picture.

Most of my better fish are caught when I don't have another person around to snap the shot. When I get the opportunity sure I take advantage. Every single fishing site, bass or otherwise I've been on, the practice of embellishment overwhelms the "honest" photos.
Last week I saw a fish caught, then weighed and measured, I know exactly what it is. This is not a bass but for heck of try and guess length and weight.

I'm curious how many people are within a 1/2 pound of the weight. I know every time I've been darn close.

Taking selfies with decent sized bass is very hard to do right. I have a large wingspan for my height, and I still have trouble. As far as trying to build an illusion to make a fish look bigger is just lame IMO.
I will second that go pros do no justice. I used to ride motocross and super cross tracks occasionally and my buddy always had his go pro with him. It made the jumps look tiny, it made it seem like everyone was slower(mainly because you are moving), and when he would fall it seemed very minor. They are still very cool, and apply to almost anything you could want to do.
My guess on the fish is 40" and 22lbs

Unless a fish is something special I don't bother with any kind of picture anymore. Is it a new PB?Or truly some rare thing and you might only catch 1 or 2 like this a year if your lucky? You guys must be setting new PB's all the time or setting some kind of personal milestone or it was some really special moment you want to remember to be snapping tons of pictures of better then average but yet just "regular" fish. I just never really felt the need to take photos of a fish that I am going to catch 50 or 100 of in a year.

I'm liking this discussion. Most of my fishing is done under my wife's radar, which mean I'm in work or workout gear and almost always alone...
In absence of a photographer, to make my catch the look the size of the great pyramid, I've used my foot as as a reference -
