Getting Up For Fishing 2024

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

Now that it's getting cold, and the fish are less active, do you guys get up at the butt crack of dawn or wait for it to get "warmer" so the fish are some what more "active"? This is obviously directed towards us northerners.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

later for sure....i shift my fishing to afternoon outings rather than morning this time of year.

fishing user avataralberto-1 reply :

I see no reason to freeze right at daylight this time of year. Some guys will still do it but most times Im fishing for fun anyway.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Afternoon for me.

fishing user avatarmichang5 reply :

What about those in the south? We like to sleep in, too!

But seriously, is there a reason to beat the sunrise for those areas where 50-60 might be a high temp?

fishing user avatarNEjitterbugger reply :

Night fishing  :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Depends. If I plan on fishing that day, I will be there usually from dawn till dark, just like I am the rest of the year. Unless it's terrible slow, or I have other things to do. But if I just get the urge to go fishing I'll go anytime of the day, might be 9am, might be 2pm, I usually don't bother getting out there much later than 3:30 or so this time of year because it get dark at 5:30.

fishing user avatarLoop_Dad reply :

I thought this thread was to ask if people having difficult time waking up...I do! And for some reason I wanted to hear others to say the same. :)

Anyhow, like ww2farmer, getting more hours is the motivation for starting early for me from this time of the year.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Bass still eat in cold water & I plan on being there to feed em!

So y'all stay home & leave the lake to me ;)

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I get up early, fish for trout, and then shift to bass before noon.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

down here in the south, when water temps get down high 30s low 40s I never seen a reason to get to the lake until 9ish.

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

Good to know, I still want to do some fishing before everything freezes over, and I'm not plaNning on ice fishing. Want to try some new spots on my lake that I found thru Bing maps satellite view. Plus I'll get to practice my slow fishing.

fishing user avatarfishguy613 reply :

im in canada and even though my boat is put away i still go to shore spots around town some mornings to fish. (6am) Managed to pull 3 walleye and 2 sauger from one spot one day, was alot more fun than sleeping or watching tv lol.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

During the summer I try to get out before sun up.  This time of year I usually make it out around mid morning.

fishing user avatarCreekcrappie reply :

Sucks because I have to walk to the lake, but I do it anyway. 6:00 in the freezing cold.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I get there at first light no matter how cold it is. First trip of the year last year it was 11 degrees when we dropped the boat in the water and we were on fish first thing. Sure it's slow sometimes but I'm sure not going to catch them from my bed  :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

When I get a chance to go fishing I go. And if I can fish from dawn to dark it's even better. Have done real good in mornings in winter for big smallies.

Same here. My regular partner always wants to keep going at dawn so we each take seperate boats and dont fish together until Feb.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Next time I'll be getting up to fish will be around the first of March

fishing user avatarPotomacBassin reply :

I lean towards later, but if the only time I can get out for the day is bright and early, then I'll go out at dawn.  Temp also needs to be above 45 which is pretty rare that early now.  I won't have time to do this until my trolling motor is fixed either.  So I'm probably out until the beginning of December which means early morning is even more out of the question.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I am burned out by getting up at 3:30am fishing 24/7 for three months straight from the pre spawn till the start of the hotter weather. Then it's off and on till I recoup. But by this time of the season it's normally out fishing by 8am or 12pm doing the fishing second and third shift. Till the ice is on. I missed most of the fishing season but I'm looking forward to next season. Right now the hunt is still on for a new PB or a new state record LMB.  This time of the year and month it's plastic swim baits.  I feel the afternoons is a better time to go. I feel the fish are sunning themselves too trying to warm up. Plus its time to look back at the past season and plan for the next season. When I see the paths of the snapping turtles heading into the swampy muddy area looking to bury themselves in the mud for the winter you know one season is coming to a close. Turkey day is near and it's time to dust off the ice fishing sled and check the equipment for the ice fishing season is fast approaching. I've seen it go from 3" of ice to 21" of ice in a little over a week of arctic air. My point is the fishing season only ends if you let it end.    Bill

fishing user avatarWalleye2Bass reply :

In the summer I go out early because it gets awful hot mid day.  However, this time of year I'll go out about noon or so unless I have good intel the fish are schooling early in the morning.  Went out early last weekend because my son woke me up at 5AM, I was one of three boats out there at sunrise, I did not catch a fish until around 11:00, a guy I saw at the boat ramp was skunked.  I fish shallow (the lakes around here are 25-30 feet deep max) so warm water=greater fish activity and that happens after the sun has time to heat the water up a bit.

I do the same, get up early, fish for jumbo perch, and then shift to bass.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Might be doing some perch jerking if the lake is too rough. Perch are yummy!

Now that is what I call a perfect day fishing! 4am - 10am = Trout / 11am - 6pm = Bass. Can't get any better than that!

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I generally shift from dawn-afternoon to mid morning-dark this time of year and through the winter.  It works out perfectly for me as I hate waking up at 4:00 to fish in the cold.

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

i'm up at 4:30 on the weekends and on the river by 5:30am this time of year in the cold.....walleye fishing.

fishing user avatarrbreedi1 reply :

I'll wait around til it warms up a little
