This was my Facebook update tonight:

So, tonight I decided to stay on the river a little later as I noticed there was a huge, bright full moon and that the light may buy me a few extra casts.  The water was freezing, my right hand was numb from the cold and herniated discs in my neck, and it's a bit tricky throwing big, bulky flies in the dark. This is not fair-weather, fun fishing. However, there was a large campfire across the river and the smell made it's way over the water and as I was releasing a smallmouth back into the water, I noticed that a couple had set up a tripod behind me, taking pictures/video of me landing the fish with the fire, fog rolling in, and giant shining moon as the backdrop.

This is why I love fall.

did you ask for a copy of the pic/video?

i think night fishing with buzz baits might work, if buzz baits don't work i would probably fish a black and blue jig/ worm and swimbait.

probably will hurt the daytime fishing abit though.

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

From what I saw last night it looked like it was daytime.

fishing user avatarBobP reply :

Opinions vary about how a full moon affects fishing but outside of the spring spawn where it can help, I think bass tend to feed more during moonlit nights and therefore less in the daytime.

In hindsight, I really wish I had.  I was freezing from wading so long in a cold river and tired from throwing an 8 wt for 6 hours.  I wasn't thinking about much other than getting the heat on in the car.

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

I slept through it. *yawn*  At my age a good nights sleep beats anything...and yes I mean anything.

fishing user avatarRed Bear reply :

fished a super moon before, it was horrible fishing wise...

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

yeah, yesterday i broke my week long skunk by catching this and on the way back home i noticed the big moon.

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

@Gundog it was not an easy day on the river.  I didn't have my yak, and it seemed like fish were holding in deeper eddies and deeper current breaks, so accessing them with waders and a fly rod was hard.  That fish I mentioned was the only one I was able to pick up.

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Several days ago the fish were active here in the everglades.  Pre super moon!

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

I had a tough day yesterday morning from 6a-1p.......

A-jay, what time of day? Here, the moon set at 6:30 AM,  moonrise was at 5:15 PM. What affect could the "Super Moon" have if it wasn't even in the sky?

Not in the Sky ?  Then where the heck was it ?

Seriously, I do believe that the moon effects the earth from both above & below the horizon.

It's all about proximity . . .

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The moon is close when directly overhead, looks bigger as it raises, over head should be about 3:30 AM tonight, looks very bright right now!

Tom

fishing user avatarJanderson45 reply :

Personally, I'm not a believer that the moon has any true tidal effect on most freshwater fisheries.. The only way I could see it making a difference is in the way BobP said, more light at night for predator fish to feed/stalk prey, which could lead to less fishing during the day.

fishing user avatarbchase44 reply :

If there were a tidal effect on freshwater fishing it seems that it would happen everytime the moon passed over, whether full or crescent.  Save for maybe the Great Lakes I don't think it would be any effect other than illuminating prey.

When I was a kid I used to take a flashlight to the shore of my home lake and spotlight minnows, crawdads..

None of them spooked or seemed to notice the light..

I'd see the occasional snake, catfish, carp, gar.. Nobody spooked but me if it was a snake.

Those minnows and crawdads are sitting ducks right now :o

Exactly, and like Tom said, wouldn't the effects of the moon be when it's proximity is close to the Earth. I also believe it's light also has an effect, allowing fish to feed at night more effectively. Notice the best fishing times, in relation to the moons position.Coinciding with the high and low tide, when it rises, sets, directly overhead, and directly underfoot. Btw, that's a super pig!

Thanks.

And these clocks - they intrigue me a little.

If only there was a way to let the fish know this is when they should eat - because I don't think they have a clue . . . .

LOL. The whole solunar thing intrigues me since reading an article by a famous fishing guide from the upper midwest (unfortunately his name escapes me), but I subscribe by the theory that the best time to go fishing is whenever you can.
