Fishing Techniques 2024

fishing user avatarFacepalmmaster reply :

I work at a day camp with children, and my job is that I work as one of the people that runs the fishing dock. A lot of the time, i'm working putting little pieces of bread on some drop-in rods that we give the little kids, but for about 1-2 hours a day I can fish the lake. There are many largemouth bass in the lake, tons of sunnies, and some crappie, carp, and pickerel thrown in. I love to fish there, but the only problem is that the bass dont seem to like any of the lures my friends and I have. I have caught a nice crappie and one bass on my rapala original floater, and a few pretty small ones on some yum dingers, but nothing works as well as live sunnies that are easily caught there. I would like to get off of the habit of using live bait, although i never get to fish anywhere else. Is there anything you would suggest for this lake? Things to keep in mind: I have very little money to spend on lures, i only have access to the part of the lake with the fishing dock, and the lake is VERY weedy.

Im a beginner, what does "a black" mean?

Buy these...

White super fluke! Fish it weedless...

http://www.basspro.com/Zoom-Soft-Plastic-Baits--Super-Fluke/product/7506/-1714970?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT

Look at the overall rating in that link and the number of reviews. Compare that to anything someone else adds to this thread. The white super fluke is the best IMHO!

Go with a 4" grub on a 1/8 oz darterhead jighead in watermelon. This will catch you all sorts of fish, including some nice largemouths.

Great suggestion. For a beginner or seasoned fisherman this combo will produce. Work it fast or slow, top or bottom, or anywhere in between, it will catch fish. I would add a bag of 3" white curly tail grubs for variety...good luck.

If there's any room left on this bandwagon, allow me to pile on :)

I've been a huge fan of plastic grubs ever since the advent of the Mister Twister grub.

As K_Mac suggested, there's seems to be something magical about "white" grubs

and not just for largemouth bass.

i agree with the grubs

Johnson® Original Beetle Spin® with that white grub attached ;)

fishing user avatarlfunk11 reply :

I have tried all kinds of different things and caught 2 bass with them. I then switched to super flukes and caught 20 bass in less time. It might be that I do not know how to fish the other things, but the super flukes have worked so well for me that I see no reason to try anything else until I stop catching fish. I also went on Bas Pro Shops website and was blown away by the massive amounts of positive reviews for those. They can be rigged to be weedless as well.

fishing user avatarAvid Angler FL reply :

Yeah with the Zoom Fluke, to rig it weedless you just take an offset worm hook 3/0 or 4/0 and rig like you would a T-Rig, but instead of adding a bullet weight, leave it weightless. Also, for a bit of added action, add a split shot of varying size about a foot up from the bait. This will give it some added action. It's not always effective but it'll make a difference at times.

I think my friend has some of those, and weve tried them, no luck

If grubs means just plain old worms, i have some 5 inchers, i have some YUM dingers in watermelon (my friend has the 4"), and ive only ever caught a couple of small bass on them. If thats not what you meant, could you please send me a link, ill check them out.

defintly read as much stuff as you can find on here its a awsome site to learn new stuff

fishing user avatarFontana Finesse Man reply :

You say earlier that the bass eat the sunfish well, and people have said try a grub, twister. Look up Kalin's mogambo in bluegill color. Big and fat, and can be fished a variety of ways. Texas rig it, lead head or trim the head in a point and fish like a wake bait or frog on top. Largemouth think it is a crippled bluegill. Something to try.

If you haven't tried a Mepp's spinner in a #2 or #3 size I would give that a shot. One of the first baits I fished for bass but you catch all different kinds of fish. The grub on a jighead is a great idea too, one of my favorite baits to give to beginnners. You also might try taking that YUM Dinger and hook it right in the middle. Cast it out and let it sink slowly with a few twitches mixed in. That's called wacky rigging, very simple but very effective. It isn't very weedless or snagless unless you get special hooks though so you may have to be careful where you casts it.

Thanks, and I know what wacky rigging is :P But anyway, ive tried yum dingers all of the three summers Ive worked there (wacky rigged) and ive only caught three fish on them, but ill try the spinner, the lake is very weedy though

have you tried a floating frog

I have a Hula popper, and that hasnt worked yet, and Ive tried a rage tail frog weedless and nothing (though the rage tails are sinkers)

It sounds like you've tried a variety of baits that haven't produced for you and others on this thread have given you some great ideas for baits to use, maybe your problem is presentation techniques? I'm not sugessting that your doing anything wrong because I haven't really read much in here or maybe flat out misread some of your posts on how your fishing these baits, but I would spend some time on trying different presentations. Please do not be offended, I'm really trying to help. Maybe you can give us some insight as to how your fishing with the baits you have or have tried? :)

fishing user avatarMike Chesney reply :

If you can't get fish on a wacky rigged stick bait(dinger) or a fluke...I'd think about trying to access another area.

None taken, even if you were saying I was doing something wrong, I wouldn't be offended, I'm sorta new to this. Anyway, I have tried many lures, some several ways. My Rapala Original Floater I've been trying a lot, I have done a quick, steady retrieve, a slow steady, and a pausing retrieve. I have tried my Hula Popper several times, sometimes letting it sit for longer or shorter times (can't have a lot of variation in those). I have tried my Yum Dingers, letting it sit a little in wacky, texas, and backwards rigging, giving it some twitches, everything. I've even used a rage tail toad, trying a slow steady retrieve, letting it sink a little, and a fast retrieve. And that's only what I'VE done, my friend has been fishing for many more years than me and has been fishing this lake at least two or three years more. He's tried EVERYTHING, and the only thing that seems to consistently catch us fish are the sunnies we catch. He has floaters, sinkers, soft plastics, all kinds of things. I'm not even sure if theres anything that will work, that lake is EXTREMELY weedy (has lots of weeds growing from the bottom, not like the weeds on the edges of lakes) which makes it almost impossible to fish sinking crankbaits or other lures that aren't weedless. I don't think there's another lake like it, my friend and I call it a freak lake. If you know some other way of presenting the lures we have that could actually catch some fish, please let me know, I want to get used to lures instead of live bait.
