Unhooking a nice LMB today and he shivered and buried a Rat-L-Trap treble all the way to the hilt in my finger. That felt good. Luckily, there was a guy pretty close the helped me with the fish and then helped me load up my boat. for the trip to the ER. First time in 10 years of Bass fishing I had to have one extracted. Don't usually get them in THAT far.
I need to buy a gripper so it doesnt happen to me. Its just a matter of time. Wonder what the best ones are ?
Oh man that sucks, I'm glad you're ok.
I've hooked myself pretty good but never quite that bad yet...it's only a matter of time though I'm sure.
Yeah. Ok. Ouch. Sorry, man. Glad you are ok.
I had it happen one time and that one time was enough for me. Now no matter what if I catch a fish on a treble hook I grab him by the belly and remove the hook with pliers, even if he is barely hooked.
Yeah if I started throwing cranks and jerks a lot, I'd get a gripper. My Grandma got a baitholder hook imbedded in her calf when we took the whole family fishing......15 minutes of "Grandpa surgery" later, the hook was out. She was in a ton of pain. Not fun!
My dad once hurried a treble hook hurried to the hilt in his palm last summer. He now fishes with fingerless gloves and is hook shy as all get out. We pulled it out right there, he drank a coke and kept fishing. He said he could feel it pull on the muscle in his hand, but magically the hook came out clean. He did take himself in for a Tetnis shot that evening just to be safe though. Hope that your hand feels better. Gloves, hook removers, and pliers have been huge additions to his box, so far so good, I would recommend that, as well as barbless hooks on treble baits. Hope you feel better so you can get out and boat more fish!
A couple months back I stuck a treble hook deep into my index finger (big dummy).
I pulled on the lure with all my might, but it was hooked on so much flesh that it wouldn't rip out.
I then pushed the hook-point all the way through my finger, snipped it off with wire cutters, then backed out the hook.
There was virtually no pain, but I felt sorry for my wife who was wincing with sympathetic pain
I smeared some Polysporin on the puncture and went back to fishing.

Exactly what happened to me as well.. hook straight thru the thumb.. couldnt get it out.. finally yanked it.. hit a ligament of some kind ..lucky to have healed after months
Never again using fingers.. always pliers
Never happened again since

This ran right up through the middle of my finger. There was no way to get at the barb or I would have cut it off myself and pulled it out. I normally wear a glove on my left hand and I ALWAYS use some very stout forceps to remove trebles. I had neither today. That WON'T happen again. Gonna try cutting the barbs off one or two crankbaits and see how they work. If I don't start losing fish, I may do it to all of them.
I learned long ago to use pliers and grab the hook first then lip them.takes pratice but after a while you can do it just as easy as lipping them
These posts are making me squirm like a worm lol

The worst I've had was a spinner that went under my fingernail that went past the barb. I just grit my teeth and ripped it out. It's times like that that I'm very glad to have high pain tolerance.
I mostly fish from a kayak and mainly use crankbaits. I hooked and landed a dink pike and made the mistake of putting him near my lap he thrashes and hooks my nutsack. had to push it thru
Whenever I land a treble hooked catch I use my bps lipper gripper, can't beat it for the price and I don't get hooked anymore
My dad 10 minutes into fishing with the first Megabass he's ever bought.
I've made that trip to the ER, couldn't push the hook thru as the barb was in the joint of my thumb. I'm very careful with bass now.
Been hooked a few other times while fishing the surf, hard to control a flopping bluefish or ladyfish. Hooked in the leg I was able to push it thru but the #1 4x hook was stronger than my wire cutter. Luckily I had passerbys that had better leverage and pressed the barb down. Odds are it will happen again.
Me too recently. Been lipping bass 20 years without a problem til then. I use gloves and grab behind the head now if it has trebles. Having a ticked off 4lb fish connected to a size no. 2 hook in your thumb really teaches a lesson.
I stuck myself with a crank bait once a few years ago. The treble was buried in my thumb. I took my fishing pliers and pulled it out and I still remember the pop it made...ouch. If it happens again I'll use the braided line around the hook and push down method.

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
Last night I had to lip a 5 lb'er that had only one hook of a Spook under his jaw, none inside the mouth. I wanted badly to land that sucker, weigh it and get a pic because I knew it was a good fish. But that thing was peeling some drag and I could see the other 5 hooks flying around looking for some fingers to bury themselves in. I finally wore it out. My buddies were in a Bass Tracker watching the thing spin me around in circles. When I brought it to hand it still had its mouth shut and I had to wrestle it to get it open.
To this day, after 35+ years fishing, I've never gotten a hook barb deep.

You better find something wooden to knock on after that comment. I've had it several times as recently as last year, it sucks every time.
I went to the ER some years ago to get a hook removed. Now I am very careful with treble hooks. If it is a big bass I let it fight until it is tired. If the bass is small I will hold it around the middle until I can lip it.
I had very spirited pike get me good a few years back - managed to remove it myself - wasn't pretty.
Hooks in My hand are always MY Fault and a display of foolish carelessness. Swore that would be the last time.
Fishing alone mostly and especially at night. So when throwing treble hook baits, I Always use a net and then a boga grip to remove the fish from the net and to hold the fish and finally long nose pliers to remove the hooks.
I do not ever need to touch the fish or the bait with my hands.
Hook Cutters are at the ready but I refuse to give any fish the chance to get me again.

Baker (just as solid as a Boga, for half the price), Make digital ones too...On 7/19/2015 at 8:07 AM, scaleface said:I need to buy a gripper so it doesnt happen to me. Its just a matter of time. Wonder what the best ones are ?
But barbless is the way to go.

Sure you're right. But if I'd been barbless last night, I would very likely not have landed that 5 lb. fish.
I had to go to the Patient First to have a stainless steel trailer hook removed on July9th.
Still taking antibiotics just to be on the safe side.
Used the spinnerbait this weekend with that trailer hook (doctor could not cut the shaft) but no bites.
Glad you are OK and you are right: sooner or later it will hit most of us.
Gets us all sooner or later. I've had four , but only one I had to cut at the head and push on thru. No ER 's needed if you get a tetanus shot every five years.
I have a long nose ER hospital pliers. Never really important till three decades when a feisty chain pickerel swallowed my bomber crankbait. My older brother warned me about them biting. I carried that pliers in my scent box. That fish tried to bite me multiple times. Both trebles were deep but I saved him.
Fish hooks? I was salt water fishing casting a open face reel. The hook dug in above my ankle. It stopped 8" up my leg. My dad was with me, he was a medic in the army. He fixed it up.
dang, that is something to think about! i have been pretty brave and lucky i guess when grabbing LMB by he mouth. i will be more careful when i think about what happened to you.
Somehow one of my PawPaw's crankbaits ended up in my bed and when I slid my leg up when I woke up it hooked me in the heel and the couch simultaneously. I was stuck for a little while. The worst time was when he hooked me in the back of the head with three trebbles all the way to the curve after I had just caught the first fish after two hours of nothing. He reached for his players and I said absolutely not and we went to the hospital. Did get one my favorite BBQ sandwiches though afterwards and the doctor let me keep the the three stats he used on me. I still use em to unhook fish 12 years later.
Typically my injuries come from shutting my fingers in my tackle boxes, that I remember I haven't been hooked bad enough to talk about however now you guys have me thinking about a lip grabber or something of the sort to land the fish.
Best $15 bucks I ever spent
I have 2 of them.
Its not just hooks folks, I stabbed myself with a knife while trying to cut a zip tie on my pole, it went DEEP. OUCH
I use pliers after hearing these posts!!

Do they float? I have a habit of losing good pliers off my kayak. I need a lanyard with a float to hold every tool I carry. That way I either carry them all or forget them all.
All these replies and others like them are the reason I crush down all the barbs on all the treble hook lures I have and usually the barb on my regular hooks too.
In middle school my dad and I were in a small John boat. I was in the front seat, he in the rear. On my back swing I hit him in the face with my crank bait, the rear treble hook going into his mouth. On my follow through I set all the hooks, two through his lower lip one through the top. It's been 15 years and he still won't get on a boat with me.
I myself buried a treble hook straight into my index finger all the way to the crook in the treble. I was by myself bank fishing close to the house. I thought for a minute or two about going to the er, decided I would try pulling it out myself. I couldn't turn the hook and poke it back through to crimp the barb because of the angle it entered my finger. So I grabbed my pliers and decided to just pull it out, by the way I dont think I would do it again. I pulled it out on the 5th pull with all my might, came a hair of passing out from the pain. I wouldn't advise doing it yourself. But I didnt want to spend 3 hours in the er when the fish were biting, so I went home put some alcohol on it and bandaged it up and went right back to fishing.
Since then my wife was kind enough to buy me some rapala gloves for Christmas. They are a life saver.
I got hooked in the neck by my Big Brother when we were kids. My uncle worked it back out with the barb still on it. 50ty years later my hands and fingers don't function very well plus my eye sight makes it hard for me to tie on hooks and baits of any kind. I hook my self on a regular bases. Keeping my shots up to date is a must. I have a Net, Boga and pliers oh yeh and gloves to keep me from getting hook after landing a fish. I gues you could say I'm back asswards.
Happened AGAIN yesterday.
Right thumb this side, the distal joint. Hook was a #2 KVD and a little past barb deep. I worked it out backwards.
It was a great LMB though, almost worth it.
