How Far Will You Drive For Good Fishing? 2024

fishing user avatarBasswhippa reply :

How far will you drive on a regular basis to get to good fishing. I have no water in the immediate vicinity. It kills me. But I'm two hours from Guntersville, Pickwick, Kentucky Lake, Wheeler, Wilson, Chick, etc. It got me to thinking..... How far do you guys drive to get to you water? Me it's an hour to two hours in any direction. Two hours is about my max.

fishing user avatarMIbassin reply :

for one day of fishing, id say about 2-3 hours

fishing user avatarretiredbosn reply :

Its an hour to Clark's Hill, Murray and about 2 to Santee. There are a couple ponds and stuff closer that I fish more just because they are close. Planning a trip to Erie next fall, that's gonna be more like 10

fishing user avatarjrsmith_80 reply :

I would travel a good 3 hrs to fish 4 or 5 times a year. On a weekly basis I drive I travel about an hour. I have a decent lake about 15 minutes from the house but the drought has about rendered that lake useless so Ive had to drive this fall.

fishing user avatarJake P reply :

I would make the trip to Fork which is a decent 2 hour drive w/o traffic IF I could get my father in law to make it every weekend. Average drive to surrounding lakes is around 15-45 minutes. I would happily drive up to 3 hours if the fishing is dynamite. If there is fish, I will go!

fishing user avatarSAC2 reply :

depends on how good the fishing is. id be willing to drive an hour and a half for a 25+ fish day. if not, i got plenty of places where i can catch 10-15 bass in 4-5 hours almost everytime that are within 45 minutes of me

fishing user avatarTopwaterspook reply :

3 hours is about my day limit. Erie is 2 and I've done that a lot.

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

It's 3hrs to the lake I guide on.

I'll drive anywhere to fish but Clarks Hill is only 20min away.

fishing user avatar00 mod reply :

Jeff

fishing user avatarpbrussell reply :

It's over an hour drive to fish anything decent around here, if that gives you any idea :)

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

We'll drive 5 hours to get to Erie, but it's no means a regular basis, more of an out of the blue

fishing user avatarTraveler2586 reply :

I'm only a half an hour from my home water, but I would drive up to two hours each way for a good day on another body of water; if I want to make a long weekend of it I'll go up to four hours each way.

fishing user avatarAndyTN reply :

I'm within 30 minutes of several local lakes and ponds. It's between 1-1 1/2 hours to the bigger lakes in my section of the state. With the price of gas I stay local most of the time.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

With my boat, not far. Local lake is 10 mins away. Another good lake is 30, another decent one is 45. Erie is an hour, but I have always gone with someone else who has a bigger safer big water boat.

fishing user avatarNoBassPro reply :

I have 4 lakes within 5 minutes of me. They may not be great, but I'd rather be fishing than driving when I can go out.

fishing user avatar11justin22 reply :

My home lake is 45 minutes but fish tournaments and the furthest one for that is bout three hours. I do take random trips visting other lakes that can be overnight trips.

fishing user avatarTuckahoe Joe reply :

I have a couple lakes within 15-20 minutes from my house. Sometimes Ill drive up to Baltimore to fish with my little brother and thats about an hour and a half to his house and then at least another 30 min to get anywhere decent.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I start every morning fishing saltwater, before I decide what my target is and where I'm going the weather and tide is checked. Most of the time I go to the inlet which is about 20 minutes, I can fish the ICW or beach about 10 minutes away if I desire. During the fall I drive about 45 minutes probably abut 6 times.

Most of my bass fishing is in the PM and I do it at home, have 6 ponds and canal. In the winter I will venture a 30 minute ride someplace once in a while for some peacocks.

fishing user avatarloodkop reply :

Day trips can be up to 2 hours one way mostly for tournaments. We try to do at least 1 serious trip a year that can mean a 2 day drive towing a boat.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Pretty much any lake really worth fishing is an hour or more from me. I've driven 3 hours for a day trip. Drove 9 hours one way to fish Minnetonka for a day and a half or a planned 9 day trip, but that's a long story. I'd much rather drive an hour or two and have a shot at some good fish rather than drive 15 to one of the local lakes where a good day is 10 fish with a remote shot at something over 4.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

I'm lucky to live within an hour of Table Rock, Beaver Lake, and Grand Lake. Some medium sized lakes also in that radius. And there's some very good community lakes within 10 minutes. Expand my radius out to three hours and there's Stockton, Bull Shoals, Ouchita, Arkansas river, and Hudson. Lots of water to fish, enough for a lifetime.

fishing user avatarjdw174 reply :

Kentucky Lake = 15 minutes

Lake Barkley = 30 minutes

When I lived in Erie, Pa, Presque Isle Bay was 15 minutes away...couple of other good waters was 30-45 mintues. I guess I've been blessed that way. :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarBASSHUNTER1961 reply :

Well, seeing how I have 6-7 hot spots all less that 5 minutes away, and one of the best being a 2 minute walk..... not very far.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

The farthest I've driven is about 40-50 minutes away to fish a gravel pit and a small lake. I don't have a boat so it's not worth it to drive 3 hours to fish from a shore :/. Most of my shore fishing spots around St Clair are within a half our drive.

Where do you live, a swamp??? LOL I thought Cape Cod was saltwater country :)

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Most of the palces nearby are within 30-90 minutes with some approaching the 2 hour mark. I have driven 4 hours one way to fish the susky for a day trip and have no problem doing so :)

Basically i will drive however long it takes for a day of good fishing.

X2, especially if I get a chance to meet some good people.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

20 years ago I drive 200 miles for a day trip, today 100 is max. I have about 6 good bass lakes within the 100 range, 4 of those within 60 miles; Casitas, Castaic, Piru and Pyramid. All these lakes small under 2500 acres.

The larger lakes are in northern CA and the Colardo river lakes are 400 to 600 miles, long trips that must be planned.

As far as time, it takes at least 30 minutes to get the boat ready and hooked up and another 30 minutes to dry off and put away at the end of day = 1'hour + driving time amd driving time is dependent on traffic where I live.

fishing user avatarAmoore9900 reply :

I am lucky the best lake in the state is a 34 second walk..but I drive 2 hours a lot in the summer to go to a lake in northern Indiana..(more then fishing)...we are planning on driving 5 hous this spring to fish a private lake across the KY border....We fished a lake in Fla last spring and it was so good (50 bass in 4 hours.. avg 3 pounds or so) I would drive the 16 hours again for a weekend to fish that...

fishing user avatarLong Mike reply :

My nearest lakes are about 45 minutes away. My problem is that I don't have a local fishing buddy, so I travel a lot. Twice a year to Trophy Country - a six hour drive. Twice a year to Toledo Bend - eight hours. Once a year to whereever the Road Trip is headed - eight to twelve hours. Twice a year to the White River below Bull Shoals for Trout fishing.- four hours. I figure I spend at least $1000 a year in gasoline alone; but it's worth it, because I get to fish with my buddies and make new friends along the way.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have water maybe 20-30 minutes from home, but it gets a lot of fishing pressure. Mark Twain and LOZ are maybe 2 to 2-1/2 hours away, but I would only make that drive if the fishing was good.

LOL.... I am surrounded by cranberry bogs, and bog ponds so the fishing is fantastic here. With all the saltwater around here, I never fish it.

And it keeps you young. Enjoy my friend, see you at Pickwick. :)

I'm about five minutes to the Irondequoit Bay launch and there's also a TON of good fishing within an hour and a half near me: http://goo.gl/maps/jKYaq

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I drive about 90 minutes to my favorite local lakes on a regular basis. Plenty of good choices within 2 hours. With gas and other costs soaring, my trips are not as frequent as they once were. I do throw a tent and gear in the truck from time to time, and get better value for my gas dollar. I camped 3 nights and fished four days this past week for the price of one trip. I did have to haul water and everything else by boat to my spot, but a man does what he has to do to fish...

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

We have been doing real well at my local haunt the last few days, but ya get tired of the same fish. Took a break and drove 50 miles to a "hot spot" yesterday morning trying to find bluefish. 2 hours and not strike, nothing is better than home sweet home, my last road trip for a while.

There are a couple of community lakes within 10 minutes of my house, so I fish them a lot.

Within a 75 mile radius are 5 larger lakes that I fish with some regularity. My yearly trip to Colorado for trout is about a 10 hr. drive.

I'll drive about 2 hours one way for a day trip. Anything longer than that...I'm staying for two or three days.

About 50 minutes to Falcon Lake Zapata, Texas.
