Eye Tracking Technology Bass Fishing 2024

fishing user avatarRMcDuffee726 reply :

So, to get into a Graduate Studies program I have decided to work with Eye Tracking Technology in theory and physically.  Basically, it allows computers to know where the user is looking (Tobii in Brief).  Eye tracking devices detect and track the features of the eyes and their movements.   The technology is associated around four key functions.  These functions include connection, calibration, synchronization and the ability to data stream.  Connection and Calibration are associated with the being able to see where the eye is looking, and the movement involved in the eye.  Synchronization is the ability to view the devices state, which is crucial for the last function.  The final function is the device needs to be able to give real-time data to the user or operator.  "Real-time" means that the data is being received as the action occurs, which in this case is eye movement.  Hopefully I explained that in a simple enough way (ask questions if you like).

Anyways, I was surprised to find that this technology has not been implemented in bass fishing yet by some of the larger companies.   Is the owner of Rage Tail on the forums?  That would be super cool to see if he could answer that question.  As I was saying, the technology has been around for a while now.  This isn't a new breakthrough in technology.  All you would need to do is recreate situational environments that you find in bass fishing such as cold muddy water etc. in the lab multiple techniques and baits could be used and the data could be studied to theoretically improve baits.  Eye tracking can give you serious amounts of data, I mean you are essentially looking at a brains thought process through a specific sense.  People only understand how bass function to a certain level (patterns, how bass react to weather etc.) but this could get so much deeper than that.  I'm curious to hear everyone’s thoughts or opinions on this.  If you guys are interested I can link some research papers on the topic, which go deeper into the subject.

Implement eye tracking in bass fishing to do like what ?

To show their actual reactions to specific baits, to see what increase eye activity (interest) in something.  You could literally do endless things for bass fishing with this technology.  You are going into a fishes brain while a bait is in front of them and receiving real-time data.

Sounds like you've got the idea, now run with it.

Too bad Reaction Innovations is already taken.

fishing user avatarTxHawgs reply :

What would u do attach the devices that track their eyes all over the outside of the tank? How would the devices stay locked onto their eyes with them moving all over the place?

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Lol...it's just fishin....

Talk about overcomplicating things....

I clearly wasn't looking for the "it's only fishing" lol. I wouldn't have written this post if that was the case.

fishing user avatarNitrofreak reply :

If fish used only their sight this may have some significance, I believe fish use more than just their sight when targeting prey, in most cases that is to say.

If sight was their only sensory input they would most likely shy away from most baits made today, I believe that when a bass studies an unfamiliar prey that it is waiting for inputs from all of its sensory organs or maybe requiring more than one input that agrees to encourage a strike or an exploratory bite.

In bass fishing, you have to believe, or have confidence in, that on most occasions a bass is studying (eyeing) your presentation, it's up to the angler to make his or her presentation real enough to trigger other sensory inputs that will allow the fish to commit to the strike.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

novel idea, but too many variables to make it a controlled study.  once you put the fish in a tank in a lab, you're no longer fishing where i fish...

Ok...then what were you looking for?  I'm all for technology but once again...it's just fishing.  Maybe your research could be used to help find a cure for cancer or something.

Give the guy a break, it's a great idea even though it probably won't revolutionize lures.

fishing user avatarCoopdog72 reply :

I've had 200 dollars worth of Lazer lures, because some guy said bass will be attracted to these lights coming from my lure. So even though the idea is cool, thanks there's just to many variables that'll be used to catch fishermen instead of fish.

True.  Message the Big O.  He's the Rage Tail guy.  The folks from Zman are on here, too.  This all sounds like something the Japanese would LOVE.

I don´t know what he smoked previously but I want some too.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Why limit it to eye tracking?  Mind control is where it's at.  You tell the fish when and where to bite. B)

Man, if he can stop a laser beam in thin air I can bet you a brand new crispy two dollar bill he can convince a bass to bite.

Graduate Studies for my Masters?

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

ETT would have limited value with bass, I think. Posture is likely more significant. A bass's pupils cannot dilate, and pupil dilation indicates adrenaline etc.

can you provide a few more details on the specifics?  they use this often in CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies, but with glasses and such.  i think you've left out a number of details as to how you'd apply this in a real world application which has left everyone here to their own devices....

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Spend your time mastering the art of preying on a fishes instincts, you'll be more successful.

fishing user avatarYourBassIsGrass reply :

I think that at the very least providing a hypothesis to your thesis would be a good starting point. Are you looking to change a lure to become more attractive? Or would the basis of the study to understand whether eye tracking can be used at all?

If you are going for the latter, you could start with getting an eye tracking system to at the very least recognize a fish eye and 'lock' onto it to start tracking.

As stated earlier, most fish, including bass, cannot constrict/dilate their pupils and they also adjust their focus differently than a human. Not sure how you would need to configure your recognition software to compensate. If you would be able to create an application that would be able to perform the very basics of eye tracking on fish you would have a decent thesis. Application of the findings (determining the attractiveness of items in front of a fish) would be a bigger step, but probably just as lengthy a goal.

Congrats to thinking outside the box. I wish you well with your research, it sounds interesting, no telling what you might discover.
