Ever catch a bass this way? 2024

fishing user avatarwaldo567 reply :

Today while fishing the strangest thing happen. I somehow managed to catch a bass with the bait going through the gills on on side and not hooked in the mouth. I caught him as soon as the bait hit the water right next to shore. Somehow it must have landed right into his gills. Very odd.

fishing user avatarBrew City Bass reply :

Did it come through his gills first? Or go through the mouth and through the gills?

I've had the latter happen when they inhale it in a striking motion. Never had the first thing happen though. Trick shot to say the least!

The line was coming out of the gill so I only assume it went in the gills first. Took me a little while to figure out how the line was coming out of the gills on the one side. And then after that I foul hooked a little guy. Finally caught two big ones in the same spot. It was a strange day at the pond for sure

No.  But once I waited so long to set the hook the bait went inside the basses mouth and out it's poop chute.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Never with a bass but 2 days in a row I caught a flathead that inhaled my bait so hard that it went in their mouth, came out their gills, and hooked them in the base of the pectoral fin.

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

I trick shotted one a while back at pond with a crankbait... casted it out and soon as I turned the handle I felt a thump amd swept-set it. I caught the bass through the dorsal fin and in the cheek. No idea how that happened.

Another weird one happened to me a few weeks back in my own pond. I was thinning out bullheads and managed to hook one through the under jaw area then into the first gill plate. Took a minute to remove. No idea how that happened.

fishing user avatarFairtax4me reply :

I've hooked a few fish in the outside of the lip. Hook shank outside, hook point going in. The weirdest, was one poor dink that I guess spit the lure right before I set, I hooked it through the eye, into roof of the mouth and the back out its nostril.

Ive managed to hook a few in the back with rattle traps. And hooked a crappie in the tail fin with a crank bait once. Seems like if you throw a hook around enough it's bound to happen at some point.

What always surprises me is when a fish manages to shake a soft plastic lure off the hook, then re-hook the lure somewhere else.

Just had this happen the other day.  Bass grabbed my DS weight off the bottom, got it stuck in his gills, and I was able to land him.  It popped free the second I was able to slack the line.

When I was little, I caught a 6-7lb bass that ate a bluegill I was reeling in. I was pretty experienced in letting a big bass swallow the bluegill when this happened (it happened quite often). The difference this time was that I was using a size 12 Aberdeen hook, which can't hook a bass that size if it's already in the bluegill's mouth.

Somehow, when the bass ate the bluegill, the hook pulled out of the bluegill's mouth, went through the gills of the bass, and wedged itself on the edge of the bass's gill plate (like how the hook on a bungee cord is only held in place by pressure) . Weird fish stuff like that just happens to me, @A-Jay calls it mojo, I'm not sure what to call it!

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Got the best screen grab I could of the Youtube video from my bigger of the 2 flatheads. You can see the jig skirt coming out the bottom of her gills right at the base of the pectoral fin. It's a miracle her teeth didn't rub through my line.

I set the hook and somehow it got wrapped around a crappie .The hook grabbed the line forming a noose and pulled tight .I lassoed it . I think Glen did the same thing on a bass .

fishing user avatarLincoln reply :

Once when I was a kid I missed a bite on a t rig and shorty after my dad hooked a fish. As he reeled it in my line slowly started to move towards him, once we landed the fish we discovered that the bass had eaten my worm, it went out through the gills, and then it went and ate his spinnerbait 30’ away

I was thinking that I was releasing the fish. No one will believe me

Hooked a dink a few months ago. Being small, he was mostly moving along the surface, even though I don't really burn them in. He suddenly decides to put up what little fight he could and starts angling off to the deep part of the pond, straight at a turtle. I had just put new Gamakatsu EWG trebbles on the lipless crankbait which were very sticky, and sure enough, he snagged the turtle. Got lucky and was able to shake the turtle loose by grabbing the hook with my pliers and just shaking.

Did you use that fish as a line thru swimbait?

I believe you. My dad and I caught the same bass at the same time in the days before cell phones.

fishing user avatarItsHardwick reply :

The other day I threw a prop bait and my only explanation is it must have landed right on the this little smallies back. It hit the water and shot to the right, I started reeling it in and it felt like I had a huge one on the line only to find out I had Gould hooked a little guy right through his back.

I've almost had this happen before!

That is crazy.

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

Had a Musky hit the red bead on a C-Rig and wrap it around his snoot.  Brought him in without a hook being in him anywhere.

Caught a 1lb bass on a 5" Senko without hooking him.  He bit the Senko behind the hook and wouldn't let go.  Actually, I've had this happen more than once.

fishing user avatarG8RBob reply :

Yep.  Cast, immediate hit, set hook, reeled her in.  The hook had gone into the gill first and then out the mouth.  When I set the hook, she was hooked in the lip.  Strange, but true.  Fish long enough, and you will see about everything.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I have hooked bass in the gill plate a few times on the outside. They probably spit out the bait about when I set the hook, causing me to snag them.

I was bream fishing and hooked a small bream with a tiny hook. A 4 pound + bass suddenly came from nowhere and swallowed the bream. I set the hook as hard as I dared with 6 pound test. I hooked the fish and fought it carefully on in and it was hooked in the lip. The hook was just big enough to fit on the lip. I actually have caught several like this.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Nailed a nice one via having the crankbait snag him in the side while fishing Lake Anna.

fishing user avatarHook2Jaw reply :

Small pond, tons of dinks and a small population of 5-10 pound or more fish, and the big girls are very cannibalistic.  Set the hook, pull a small one in, 5er smacks the dink, knocks the hook through the dink, and gets foul hooked.

I would never believe you if you told me that, but it happened.

fishing user avatarRealtreeByGod reply :

I foul hooked a little 1.5 pounder in the side with an X-Rap once. Best I can think of what happened was that it swam up to investigate when it was suspending and I stuck it in the side with both trebles when I jerked the lure again.

Only real weird catch I've had.

fishing user avatarDerek1 reply :

I reeled in about a two pounder with a treble just sitting on the back side of the gill on the outside not actually hooked at all. I’ve also had many a lure fall right off as soon as I grab the fish, I’m sure that’s common. Tells me I need to work on my hookset.
