Australian traveling the USA who wants to catch a bass 2024

fishing user avatarJosh-Volf reply :

Hey guys , I'm from Australia and will be traveling the states from the 15 of August to the 15 of October and I really want to catch a bass plus meet great people and enjoy a few beers . I am a very keen angler and keen to check out how you guys go about catching the all mighty bass . My adventure starts at New York and continues to Washington , Nashville , New Orleans , Austin , Odessa then to las vagas  and so on . I'm after advice and recommendations for charters and what I can expect for that time of year . I'm obviously a major green horn and any advice and tips will be greatly appreciated cheers guys  .

Welcome to the forum!

If your adventures bring you through Kansas, I'll put you on some fish.

fishing user avatarJosh-Volf reply :

Sweet man that would be great . will let you know if I'm coming through that way

fishing user avatarQuarry Man reply :

Good luck with your vacation, and welcome to Bassresource! Texas, Florida, and California are the best largemouth states. Michigan, and New York are of the better smallmouth states.

fishing user avatarJosh-Volf reply :

Sweet man looking to spend a bit time in Texas so will see what the adventure brings keen to catch anything really

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Austin Texas has outstanding bass fishing within the city limits. While ya there check out Aaron Franklin BBQ, voted best BBQ in the world!

New Orleans has some of the best offshore angling. Food wise can't list em all!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Welcome to the BR site and it sounds like you plan to travel across America, you should enjoy your vacation. We have several different bass; largemouth, Smallmouth and spotted bass are the most common with LMB bass the most popular.

You have a bass in Australia called Australian bass that looks similar to smallmouth bass and I recall located in the southern region.

Your trip is during our summer transitioning to fall, hot and humid in August turning cooler in October. We can help you with some suggestions if you have a travel itinerary with some dates where you plan to travel.

If your going to be spending sometime in Austin and like to fish out of a kayak. I can probably fix you up with a trip. I've got plenty of extra tackle and know the area well. There are several kayak rental places in the area if I can't scratch one up.

Regards,

Fishingmickey

p.s. Franklins BBQ is the bomb, but waiting hours in a "cue" for it suck.

Welcome aboard and welcome to the U.S. (when you arrive).

It doesn't appear like you will be but if you happen to be driving through Central Illinois, I can probably find some fish for you.  Nothing huge, perhaps, like the southern states have but they are (sometimes) obliging.

Be aware that EVERY state will have it's own fishing license and fees.  You'll probably have to buy an out-of-state license.  Some states may have short 3 or 5 day licenses while others may require you pay for an entire year.  There should not be any hassles regarding buying the licenses though you may take a bit of a "hit" as you leapfrog from state to state.

As mentioned already, the southern states will be scorchers in the summertime.  You can still (perhaps) catch fish (no guarantees) but you may die of heat stroke while doing so.  Fortunately, the fish tend to bite best in the early mornings, late evenings, and at night when it's not so unbearably hot.

I'd like to hear how you do.  Good luck!

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Congrats, it sounds like a great trip. Get some senkos in watermelon red color, add a #3 Gama EWG hook and some bullet weights and you can catch large and small mouth anywhere they live.  Fish it slow, fish it fast, and everything in between, this is a fish catching little bait.  Magical little bait.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I'm in Cali so can't offer up any advice for your itinerary, but hopefully on your trip you have the time to keep some sort of thread updated on here to let us know how the trip/fishing is going!  Hope you enjoy your stay!

fishing user avatarDoug Anderson reply :

I am just south of Washington DC, Have tackle and beer. PM for days you will be in the area.

speak broken Oz.

fishing user avatarRMax reply :

Eat tons of tacos and burritos. I have a feeling those aren't too present in Australia.

fishing user avatarHot Rod Johnson reply :

New York State: #1 NIAGARA RIVER, #2. LAKE CHAMPLAIN...

Please check your PM's... #3. Lake Erie in Western New York.... In a 30- mile radius from Buffalo New York your odds for catching a twenty plus pound limit of five Smallmouth Bass may be better here than anywhere. Plus you can do this in any season..

fishing user avatarJosh-Volf reply :

Thanks for all the help guys will keep you posted as to what my movements are and hopefully some pictures of some geh geh geh geh GIANT bass haha

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Let us know how you do as you go along your trip.  Many of us will be following.  Good luck!

fishing user avatarsmr913 reply :

Send me a message when you are in Nashville. If I'm around I'll try to take you wading and put you on some smallies. If I'm not available I can give you some spots to try on your own.

Got to get to Bass Pro in Springfield Missouri if you want to get to a big tackle store. Plus it's not far from the White River Chain of Lakes.

Go to the Bass Pro in the Pyramid in Memphis. Not sure if there other location in Memphis is still open or not, lots of Memphis guys on the forum though. It is a spectacle. You can probably hit a dozen Bass Pros on your trip. Also the Cabelas in Dallas is awesome as well. Not sure the state that company or their retail spots are in with the buyout.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Best destination fishing stores, Bass Pro Pyramid, and Springfield Bass Pro. If you're in northern/central Wisconsin let me know and I'll take you out. Also, I don't live far from the St. Croix rod factory and if you need a rod they'll have it!

fishing user avatarMysteryTackleBox reply :

Looks like you’ve got an awesome trip planned and you will definitely be traveling through lots of prime-time bass fishing territory! New York, where you are beginning your trip, offers fantastic smallmouth bass fishing statewide and you’ll have a great chance of catching a monster largemouth in the southern states near Texas. To help in your bass fishing adventure, here you can find a list we put together of the Best Bass Fishing Lakes of 2016.

Happy Fishing!

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I would take you fishing but I'm afraid there would be Aussies all over my fishing spot from then on .;)

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

The bass fishing near New Orleans is nothing terribly special, its available but I don't think it will wow you like it will in many of those other places you are visiting.  If you wanted to fish around New Orleans, I'd recommend going either Salt water inshore or offshore, both will be a blast it just depends on how much you want to spend.  If you need more info let me know, I know a couple inshore salt water guides and can point you in the right direction.
