Your tackle buying strategy? 2025

fishing user avatarMattinOK reply :

I was just looking through my tackle bag, and started to think about something. What percent of your tackle do you pay full price for? About half of my collection has come from garage sales (I've found 20 brand new packs of soft plastics for 25 cents each, NIP spinners and cranks for $1), and sales/clearances/closeouts.

fishing user avatarandamtoft reply :

between ebay bucks, bing cashback, and sales, i hardly ever pay full price. Only pay full price when item is at a store and i need it that day or something

fishing user avatarAdam Harbuck reply :

If I need it, I go to BPS or Academy and buy it, at full price. Sometimes I will look at a clearance selection, but in my case, all I see is picked over junk that no one else wants, why would I?

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Usually about half of my tackle was on sale the other half i paid full price for. 50% sounds about right to me.

Reels however......i don't think I've paid full price for them except maybe 2 of them. ;D

fishing user avatarbigtimfish reply :

51 - 75%.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Just about all of it for me.  Probably 76-100%.  If I need it, I just buy it.

Same here.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Less than 25%  ;)

fishing user avatarmidnighthrasher reply :

I buy 75 % of my stuff at Tackle Warehouse. I pay full price at TW apart from the odd sale. Where i save money is because TW is so much cheaper that gear in Canada. So for me alot of things at TW even though it is their full price is a awesome deal for me.

fishing user avatarD4u2s0t reply :

I shop many times on ebay, and get tons of items for free in the process.  I pay full price very few times.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

i picked 76 %-100% ..i usually pay full price for tackle (baits , lures , soft plastics) because the baits are never on sale !!! i don't shop the bargin bins and i don't like the cheap baits (not that i buy expensive stuff either !) i just get what i know i need and want . but when it comes to reels , i prefer to get them off e-bay , from excellent sellers like Lakeside Reels , United Outdoors , etc... , all NIB deals . as for rods , getting custom made rods , there is no such thing as "below retail" ;D

fishing user avatarGangley reply :

generally, when I decide i need a certain lure, I want it then and there.  I do not wait for sales.  Certain stores in my area have certain items cheaper than others. I chose the store according to what I need at the time and will go purchase it there, regardless of sale.

For instance, my Walmart has Rapalas for much cheaper than any store in the area, but Academy has soft plastics for cheaper (ZOOM, Berkely).  This never fails, so depending on what I want, I select the store to go to and purchase.  It would cost me more to search for the sales, than it would to buy the lures outright considering I only by one or two things at a time as I need them.

If i was buying in large bulk, then I would definately look for sales

fishing user avatarTeal101 reply :

Only lures I pay full price for are rapalas.  Everything else is when its on sale unless I need it then.

Rods and reels, never paid full price for any of them.  Ebay has great deals.

fishing user avatarLAO162 reply :

To say I'm cheap is an understatement ;)

fishing user avatarBamajoker reply :

If i don't need something immediately i have a friend who can order from Farris Brothers and get Tackle and rods etc at wholesale but if i'm headed out and need something ill pay full price.

But what about the stores close to the river/lakes that have a 25-50% mark up on baits lol

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

Everything purchased for wholesale.

fishing user avatarDave P reply :

'Bout half. Mostly baits. Find a lot on clearance and I hate sorting through bargain bins unless they're freshly stocked!

You must be my long-lost brother ;)

I'm an unrepentant yard sale shopper. My tackle box (and my rod rack) is full of stuff I've bought for pennies on the dollar at garage sales. I pick up a lot of stuff in the clearance bins too.

fishing user avatarominousone reply :

I am a value shopper especially with hobbies. I will usually only buy on sale something that I know that I will use.  I make my own soft plastics, jigs, and spinnerbaits so that alone puts them at a fraction of retail (except when you figure in all the lure making equipment... which I usually can find a deal of some sort on).

fishing user avatarStasher1 reply :

I don't work during the week, so I spend some of that time hitting the clearance bins of my local retailers. I usually find some good deals on the things I use, but I have a tendency to buy way more than I need.

I typically pay retail for my terminal tackle and rods, and less than retail for my lures, reels, and line.

fishing user avatarMike Z reply :

I'll say 50% for myself because the Senkos and line I recently bought was on sale. Plus I bought a reel for half price but a rod at full price.

another question though.

I was at Gander Mountain last week and they had the store brand Trick Sticks, beavers, craws, and other baits for their regular price. However, their store branded regular price was 30% less than the name brand and they have you about 30% more. So a 10 pack of trick stick from the regular company was $5 but the Gander Mountain package was a 15 pack (a free hook too) and only about $3.

So is that paying regular price, or a discount?  :-?

fishing user avatarSGT Rico reply :

My best friend owns a tackle shop, so I am very blessed  ;)

fishing user avatarDave D reply :

I'm a sale shopper and when I see something that I use a lot I stock up. Bad thing is even if I'm still stocked up and see another good deal...I stock up again. DOH!

fishing user avatarshootermcbob reply :

I watch the bargain cave online at cabelas and the clearance area online for bass pro. I also check out the home sites for gambler and others. I rarely pay full price for any tackle. I check every other day or so and take advantage when the opportunity comes. I also take advantage of the get 20 bucks off if you spend a hundred dollars at cabelas and bass pro if they have other stuff on sale that i want or need. I also keep an eye on walmart. Many times I find really great deals after the season. Last year I got 2 spools of berkely big game ( 12 lb) for a buck each.

I would have to say 50-75%. I'm just building up my tackle now though. Usually I look for the deals!

fishing user avatarOntario Bass reply :

I like to shop ebay or walk around bass pro looking at the sale tags.  I'd say i pay full price around 50% of the time.  I do this when it's a product i really need.
