Jig fishing from shore 2025

For the guys that throw jigs from shore, what do you use? What weight? Head style? Was told at my LFS not to throw jigs from shore because they wont work correctly. I feel like there might be some truth to that but at the same time why couldnt I?

Your LFS is feeding you a line...I throw jigs from the shore all the time. Head depends on what cover and structure that I am fishing. It’s open I go with a football head. If there is lots of cover I put an Arky head jig that will pull through cover easier. I like throwing swim jigs(keitech with fats) from the shore a lot. They cover a lot of water and are more versatile.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think 3/8 would be too heavy? I have the setup to throw it. I fish mostly hard bottom with sparse vegetation.

A Texas Rigged Plastic with a 'shirt' incorporated into it - pretty much fishes (and catches fish) like a jig and is a great choice in & around most any cover but especially from shore.
Easy to put together and extremely customize-able to most any situation.
The weight size, shirt color, type & color trailer, as well as the matching hook can ALL be whatever you want.
With a small selection of the above Items, one can make up an assortment of "jigs" right on the spot.

I throw 3/8 oz, 1/2 oz, and sometimes a 1 oz depending on the type of cover.

A 3/8 ounce is a good all around choice . Back in the day I caught lots of big bass on a 3/8 Arkie style from a culvert that went under a road . Trees would wash up against it and the bass would be right in the thick of things .

I don't see any issues with jigging from shore, aside from the possibility that the vegetation is so thick near-shore that you would have to pick a salad off the jig every time you need to cast again. That's the problem I have once it is around mid-June.
If that is ever the case, then take A-Jay's suggestion with the skirted Texas rig.

That's a good one! As far as weight, it will depend on the same things as if you were standing on fiberglass, so no way to answer if 3/8 "will work" or not. Shore fishing isn't any different than fishing from a boat.

I fish jigs all the time from shore. I usually try and get away with the lightest jog possible so spend a lot of time throwing 1/4 oz. I’ve thrown up to a 1oz jig to get it farther out. I find with a lighter jig I tend to get hung up less. I will say I do tend to lose more jigs fishing them from shore vs my boat or kayak...though they still catch the same amount of fish

Yes, how do you get your jig unstuck from shore? In boats you go to the other side and it often comes free. Jigs get hung so often it seems.
Based on that, I'd say either don't use braid or use a leader if you use braid so you can break that line and retie and keep fishing. You might lose many yards of braid otherwise if you have to cut when it's out far.

I've tossed jigs from shore for years. Most times I used 12-14 lb copoly, or 15 lb mono. And yes, I've got snagged a few times, just part of the game..

Back when I was fishing the ditches I was using a 6'0" mh Lightning rod mostly and spooled with 14 lb stren . I was horsing those bass in , up to 7 lbs , maybe an 8 thrown in .

Depending on how deep it is, I use 1/8oz hair jigs up to 1/4oz with a trailer. My personal favorite is a 3/16oz Owner (black and blue) with a small craw trailer.

That's stupid (the LFS, not you). Fishing a jig from shore is what gave me the confidence in a jig to begin with. I've had some special days throwing them from shore. Find yourself a ledge, and its on.

Yes. Fish have been caught with a jig from shore. 1/4, 3/8 probably your best bet. Straight out, 45, parallel, pitch, swim, drag..try it all

I fish the same jigs from shore as I do from a boat minus the heavy football jigs I'd fish on deep offshore structure.

While you're getting excellent advice on casting a jig from shore DO NOT overlook punching from shore.
In most bodies of water the thicker cover is within punching distance from the shoreline.
Many times I've wanted to get out the boat & get on the shore for better positioning.
Actually I've done it a few times ????

Catt, I tried punching from shore for the first time a couple weeks ago and I couldn’t punch all the way thru. I was using a 3/4 ounce tungsten weight. Since I was casting far from shore do I need heavier weights to account for all of the line creating flatter angles? Hope I’m making sense.

Your LFS should be encouraging you to fish jigs from shore, you lose more, they sell more. The issue is it's difficult to unsnag a jig from shore because you can't change the angle to shake it loose.
I will go against the grain on this topic and suggest a bullet weight T-rigged worm or creature will catch more bass working uphill from shore most of the time.

If 3/4 oz aint punching through go up in weight until it breaks through with minimal shaking of the rod tip.
During warm water periods that quick fall of an 1.25-1.5 oz will trigger a reaction strike.
As far selecting a Texas Rig over Jig-n-Craw

FYI ????
Most anglers try forcing a jig through grass which is all wrong, you finesse it through grass. When you feel the jig starting to load up in the grass...STOP! Release the pressure, pull up until you feel the heaviness again but apply slightly more pressure, then release, repeat until it breaks free (at this point ya wanna hold on real tight to your rod cause ya might get your arm broke). You want the motion to be similar to & as fast as working a shaky head, you're just applying more pressure.
By the way same thing with a t-rig!

I throw jigs around certain points and weedless structure that I can get to.
I typically use 1/4oz - 3/8oz.

My go to rig when I first get to the water. I throw 1/2 oz but I think I'm gonna switch to 3/8 oz just to lighten my bank fishing gear. Arky of my own creation or a Danny Brauer structure Jig.
