Whopper Ploppers 2024

fishing user avatardgkasper58 reply :

So I am late to the scene with the whopper ploppers and I only threw the 90's last year.  Did OK had my fair share of issues with them but with BassResource's most annoying latest sale thread and some great sale prices I went all in and bought 3 110's and a 130.

These things look like a load to throw.  Gonna go 50lb braid on 7' mh rod.---Is the rod too light?  I am pushing the limits of the rod description

Also do I need to worry about a swivel since I am using braid?  I am in a weedy lake and can only imagine launching these things and getting a tangle right away.

TIA

fishing user avatarNolanh18 reply :

I’ve thrown 90 and 110 whopper ploppers on the same kind of rod you described with 30lb braid without any issues, mostly at a pond with a lot of reeds along the shoreline. Haven’t thrown the 130 much though.

fishing user avatarHappybeerbuzz reply :

I wouldn’t throw trebles into the weeds.  It’s too much hassle.  Besides, I have frogs for that.  I just throw whopper ploppers along weed lines and open water so I just use a MH for the 110 and a M for the 90.  12# Big Game is sufficient for either.

I am talking about vegetation under the water that gets chewed up and is sparcley floating around that happens to find my trebles.

Obviously not throwing it into lillies :D

You may find that throwing the WP in those conditions is a frustrating experience. It's not just the trebles picking up weeds, but it's also a pain when the weeds get caught between the prop end and main body and the darn thing stops spinning.

I love fishing the WP, but in conditions like those you described it tests my patience. I'll usually throw a Teckel Sprinker frog or a Booyah Pad Crasher instead.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

Exactly this ^^^^

just a small piece of floating salad will create a big problem on WP with severe line twisted problem no matter mono or braid. I use WP only in open water and also got sprinker frog when fish around weedy condition.

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

I use a Cabelas Tournament ZX medium heavy with 30lbs. Power Pro braid and have no problems throwing 90’s, 110’s, and 130’s.

I think you’ll really enjoy the WP and see that they are one of the best lures around.

I do use Mustad KVD Fastach swivel clips. They are a lot stronger than swivel snaps.

Which model of the ZX do you use?

I have a Cabela's gift card that I was gonna use on this exact rod. But as of just a few days ago, none of the ZX bass rods are on their site anymore. I wonder if they discontinued them.

That's what I'm wondering too. I noticed that.

When Bass Pro bought out Cabelas I ordered 8 of the Cabelas Tournament ZX rods bc I thought this might happen. Sad.

Today I went to my local Cabela's, and they still had a handful of the ZX rods left (so I was able to get my frog rod!). But on their site it's gone. So maybe once they're gone from the stores, that's it?

That’s what I’m thinking. Liquidating the remaining inventory.

I am not a big fan of snaps.  I am more worried about the line twists.  I was thinking about a ball bearing swivel or barrel swivel.  Not sure if I want the extra knots in there.

fishing user avatar5by3 reply :

I throw the WP 110 on a dobyns 736 cb Glass with 40lb braid. Wonderful rod for this bait.

I tie the braid straight to the bait with a palomar knot and have not experienced any line twist issues. For me, the less extra knots/swivels, the better. Hope this helps!

These do have swivels attached.

OoOoOo nice! never saw the bottom ones. Thanks for the information!!!

Well, add me to the Plopper gang. I just caught my first fish on one, a massive 12" LMB. WP90, 6'6" M Aird X with 10lb YZH. He hammered it on a long cast from shore. Fun stuff.

Congrats!!!

I think you’ll see that the Whopper Plopper will catch you many more fish!

fishing user avatarDrew03cmc reply :

I hope so, I've been quite disappointed with them.

fishing user avatargobig reply :

Yes, use a swivel. Don't listen to the na sayers throw that thing in some bad places. Where the rest of the crowd says to throw something else.

Are these the bottom ones? http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Mustad_KVD_Ball_Bearing_Swivel_with_Fastach_Clip_12pk/descpage-KVFS.html

Shows 2 sizes. I'm assuming the clip 1 is the 1.2 size, and clip 2 is the 2.3? What size do you use for the 110 Plopper? And the 130?

Yep. I use the 2.3.

The smaller one might work but I think it could be hard to get on.

OK, thanks. And the swivel doesn't hinder it at all? Doesn't weigh the nose down?

Not at all. Caught a bunch of bass with it the other day.

I also like these clips because they are far stronger than regular swivel snaps.

Likely just the make/model.  Same with reels as well.  I work for Cabela's as a PT 2nd job, and can confirm that Cabela's is weeding out the house brand, likely to carry Bass Pro's brand.  This is absolutely NOT true for other stuff like camping or hunting products, but since BPS is centered around fishing, it makes sense to rid the Cabela's brand fishing gear in favor of BPS branded equipment.

Too bad bc I've always thought Cabelas brand stuff was better than Bass Pro, especially their clothing.

Well you’re in luck, cause it’s only the fishing rods/reels as of now.  Lures, and all other stuff is still stocked strong.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

You'll have fewer issues with heavy braid HOWEVER, as has already been said, even the slightest bit of weed or junk between the tail and the body will cause the ENTIRE lure to twist and without a swivel, you'll likely have some problems.  I used my WP extensively for the first time last evening and I was not thrilled with this tendency.  I had mono on my bait caster and now I'm gonna have to "unravel" the twist the WP imparted on it.  A swivel is going to be a permanent addition to this bait from here on out.

We didn’t have too many problems with this issue until the end of the season when the weeds got thick. Not a huge problem but I agree it definitely happens sometimes.

Started using these bc they are a lot stronger than regular swivel snaps and they work well. I used the #2.3 size for 110 Whopper Ploppers.

I am a hard core musky fisherman in the fall. Way before the WP came out I would catch big bass on the musky sized top raider. I always said I needed to make a smaller one for bass. I sure did miss out on that one
