Hello all, I just received a 100 dollar gift card for Bass Pro Shop and I was wondering if you fellas can give me some ideas of what to purchase to make the best use of the gift card. I was planning on stocking up on lures and terminal tackle, since I already just purchased a good rod/reel already. What types of things should I look out for to get the most out of this gift card, since I know if I added a few lures here and there it would add up real quick. For example, are there cheaper alternative that I can purchase instead of a name brands like rapala or lucky craft that will perform decently? Maybe even tell me what you would personally get if you had a 100 dollar gift card and i'll just copy and paste your answer into my shopping cart
Most bass pro models of other brand ne lures are pretty decent. Otherwise hard to help you without knowing your fishing style location and favorite techniques to help you choose.

Well, I enjoy a a variety of bass fishing techniques. I am open to anything new, but I do a lot of the general worm/jig, crankbait, and spinnerbait fishing. I was looking for several crankbaits and jerkbaits. Though, other than the well known brands, I've never tried any of the imitations or even BPS brands. This includes fishing line and all the terminal tackle as well.
Check the clearance bins and pick out what you use the most of.
These "other brands" you speak of catch as many fish as rapalas etc... all baits are very good on certain days, conditions etc..its just a matter of throwing them and catching a fish or two on them then boom you have confidence in them, hence youll use them more and catch more fish on them..theres a few colors/style/ type lures i have and have never been able to get a bite on and they just sit and never get used until i take only that and head out and am forced to fish it and catch fish with it..that doesent happen often because i have plenty of baits i know will catch fish and am too stubborn to try the ones i dont like.. 100 bucks iwould get a few cranks you like, some jigs and spinnerbaits and call it good..youll be able to get about 15 good lures,jigs,cranks...
Get some XPS line of your choice...Used to use it and liked it
Stick O's...They're not a Yamamoto Senko but that's alright.
Scum frog
Booya jigs
BPS plastic terminal boxes
Mike
thanks for the recommendation guys. I feel a bit more at ease now purchasing the imitation stuff

the XPS and Stick-Os were also the stuff I was looking at, but was afraid of its quality compared to well known brands.
BPS shroom head jigs if you ned rig, i like them a bit better than the zman's because you can pick the hook size
Bomber and Norman crankbaits are a good value . Have fun shopping .

The quality of the XPS line is fine.
Many BPS sponsored pro's and many posters here use it.
From what I understand it's made by Seaguar useing some kind of priority process. I may be wrong, but someone a lot smarter than me may be by soon and explain better.
Other than a Sluggo, I throw thier Stick O's stick bait more than any other.
They don't have the salt content that a Senko has, and maybe a fraction less action on a wacky hook, and that's fine with me.
They sure will last longer too.

Was thinking about grabbing 1 or 2 of those as well!

Thanks for the input Mike very helpful! I just thought well should I buy 2-3 cheaper alternatives or is what you pay for is what you get kinda thing and I should just buy 1 quality compare to 2-3 cheaper ones. Quantity > Quality?
IMO, this is the perfect time to go ahead and buy that Lucky Craft, Megabass and Rapala. I assume this was a gift of some sort? Buy yourself something nice that you wouldn't if you were just browsing there with your own debit card. I won't say that BPS stuff won't catch fish. But, I will also argue that LC and Rapala are 'better', IMHO. Are they $5 or $10, or whatever, better???? Who's to say? I think so. Which is why this is the time to find out for yourself. I spent a few years buying cheaper lures before I broke down and bought something more expensive as a treat. I haven't bought any BPS anything since.
Another reason....if this was, in fact, a gift then don't you think it'd be more special in 5 years when you look at that LC bait and remember who 'gave it to you'? A few BPS cranks are going to be lost, broken or forgotten by the end of next month....or at least they won't be memorable as to who was responsible for you getting them.

I agree with you on this one, but only if the OP has experience fishing the types of lures that he want to buy. In my opinion, if he has thrown a crank or jerk bait only a few times, he isn't going to notice much of a difference between that BPS or megabass, except at check-out.
I'm pretty biased, because I don't use hard baits a whole lot (have plenty of them, that bait monkey is a jerk..) I could probably keep 2 cranks, 2 square bills and 2 jerkbaits and never need anymore than that.
If it were me, I'd stock up on plastics such as creatures, beavers, trick worms and trailers. Throw in a few jigs, hollow body frog or two and your terminal tackle and call it a day.

That was the plan I figured I was going to stock up on a few bags of plastics/ terminal tackle then whatever I had left I'd buy some hard baits. I thought I would just get a few more hard baits if i didn't buy the expensive brands, but Choporoz did make a good point above...
XPS lures are solid lures for the price. Harbaits and plastics both. I would look into some of them if I were you. The only time I've brought myself to buy more expensive brands is when I catch a sale. But I can tell you that I've caught plenty of fish on XPS lures, and have more expensive lures that don't catch fish. Lucky Craft makes solid baits, their Jerkbais are especially popular, but when it comes to something like a topwater or soft plastic, I do just fine with XPS.
You could also buy a bag of zman baits for every 5 bags of other plastics you want. That 1 bag will outlast the 5 bags of the other product every time.
JUST KEEP THEM IN THEIR ORIGINAL BAG
DID I MENTION TO KEEP THEM IN THEIR ORIGINAL BAG???
Well, if you are ordering on line you will defenently need to order now. Otherwise plan on buying some shipping (run about $15.00) and dont forget to pick up a sales tax for 6-8 dollars.

Thanks Jakob, good to know the XPS works. I've fished with plenty of quality lures from rapela to megabass, but I've never given any of the cheaper alternatives a chance, so i just thought what if I wanted to save some cash then maybe those BPS would be a good bargain.

IMO you should look to fill out tackle and baits for your preferred method. In my case its soft baits so expand the inventory of hooks and weights alonng with various baits in multiple size, styles, and colors. Or you can decide to outfit an entirely new method that you have wanted to try, such as drop shotting. I would not just buy bargain lures that you may rarely or never use. Every fisherman has a go to style and presentation that he believes will catch fish. More tackle and lures doesn't mean more fish in the boat.
I was going to say those el cheapo Uncle Buck's spinnerbaits for like $1.50 each. But I went on their site and the cheapest BPS brand SB is now $4.49. That's a shame. I still have some of those old ones and they still work fine. They had good hooks and blades. Realistic heads with holographic eyes are really not necessary.
Go to Academy and pick up some cheap SBs with a variety of blade combos (right now willow blades are what you want) and a box of good trailer hooks.
If I had $100 to spend at BPS, I would either stock up on the things I use all the time or splurge. It all depends on what I have in my tackle bag to last me the rest of the year. If I had to stock up, I would get 5in senkos, 4/0 EWG hooks from Gamakatzu, and Seagur Invisix. If I had to splurge, I would pick up a couple of megabass lures (vision 110's and knuckle 60's) and a Case knife.
If i had the gift card i would get a few plano boxes and stock up on tackle, as fas as a cheaper alternative bps brand lures are just as good as most.
Well its not fishing tackle but if I was at Bass Pro I would have to get some fudge....
