Want To Own Just One High-End Lure? 2024

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Megabass PopMax

This is a bass magnet. Mine is beat to death and

it's going to stay that way! This was by far my best

producing topwater lure in 2010.

The only one I own is the Tonosama Frog pattern.

Dually Noted!

My only high end lure is the Deps Buzzjet. I am sure excited to see what it can produce.

This is, without a doubt, my favorite popper; I can pop/walk circles around a Rico with a Pop-X.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Been wanting to try one of those Pop Max for a long, long time now. Every time I walk into the mom and pop's store and pick it up I end up changing my mind. That $28 price tag just seems to dang steep.Been waiting for one to pop up in the flea market....but that hasn't happened yet that I've seen.

fishing user avatarMarc David reply :

I've been looking at them for a while. Anyone know what about the Pop Max makes them better than other poppers?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Consider this: You probably won't lose a topwater

lure. So, even at $28, you will have this lure for a

very long time. I don't remember exactly when I

bought mine, but it was at least 5 years ago.

fishing user avatarchromedog reply :

Where do you guys usually purchase them from?  TW only carries them in two colors.

fishing user avatarMorelures reply :

Do you like it allot better then the Rico popper? If so why? I havent had the chance to use the Megabass PopMax yet.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The Rico's biggest issue, for me, is weight. Maybe

they are great lures, but mine are just a part of the

95% of my collection that I never fish.

;)

fishing user avatardeaknh03 reply :

I just looked on ebay and found a bunch, between $15 and $29, is there a difference? The pop max that is.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Well I pulled the trigger on one.Ended up getting the Pop max Cicada.

chromedog,Look on ebay....there's plenty of them on there.

It depends on the seller but also depends also a lot on the availability of certain colors. Megabass used to paint particular color schemes of certain colors and patterns and they made only for one year, to the point that their lures had the year painted on the lure, those limited run colors and patterns make them more desirable ( for collectors ) and boost the price. Other colors were painted on more baits and year after year so those are cheaper.

For example: Cicada, that color was painted about .... 3 years ago ? you guyz in 17 year cicada territory know better than I, when was it ? So that Cicada pattern is a limited run ( I wouldn 't fish it ).

Other colors seem particularily scarce, Tonosama Frog ( the one RW has ) is one of them, it 's not a limited run but I don 't think they paint a lot of them.

So I just brought a lure I probably won't find again if i needed another one?

Speak for your own waters ;). I watched in horror one morning as very small pike went completely airborne and came down on the front of my sammy mouth agape, cutting my line and taking my lure in one swipe. It happened in the blink of an eye but seemed like slow motion ;D That said I still bought more sammy's. But Tw's can and will be lost around here. It sucks when it's a $6 spook, it really sucks when it's a $16 LC, and it would probably seem like the end of the world when it's a $28 MB popper,I don't have one, but if we didn't have those toothy bait thieves around here I would.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

You're right, I hadn't considered "toothy critters".

;)

fishing user avatarchromedog reply :

Well, I bought one.  I hope I have the stones to actually fish it, lol.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

RW, how much of your success with this lure do you attribute to the color? Are they worth considering in other colors?

I have always questioned color in regards to topwaters as well, I guess the fish only sees the bottom, maybe a bit of the sides, so what does the color really matter?

This fish was was caught on a discontinued JDM crankbait, on 8# CXX, using an Avid AVC70MM.  To think I was lucky to get it back is a HUGE understatement.

:(

fishing user avatarbrushhoggin reply :

those pop maxs are sexy but i dont think they catch more bass. i've done exceptionally well with my plain ole rebel. maybe its cause i  fish murky water exclusively and their just stalking the sound its making rather than studying it for a second before hittin it

Haha, that would be a downer to lose a $20+ crankbait. I have a hard time dropping more than $10 on a lure because of all the pike in my local waters.

The good thing is, oftentimes when a pike snatches a lure, they aren't even really hooked. Three times last year I was able to find my lure floating within a minute, just yards from the scene of the crime. One was a Sammy, another was a Gunfish, and the other was a Phat Frog. My total losses to pike last year was about $60 worth of jigs, tungsten sinkers, crankbaits, frogs, and chatterbaits. :-[

I might have to jump on one of these Pop Max and hope for the best. They look really cool with those open gills, and I haven't tried a Megabass lure yet.

If I had to choose one lure, it would be an American Shad LC Pointer 100. These are about as "high-end" as I've been willing to go as of yet.

fishing user avatarWanderLust reply :

American Shad LC 100 & 128 are awesome!!!

As far as color, the only lure I've ever painted was a spook. And I painted it jet black. ;)

Needed a dark color for dusk fishing.

I honestly don't know. I only have one and I like

green, so that's how I ended up with this particular

lure.

;D ;D ;) ;D ;D

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Besides, Tonosama Frog pattern is simply beautiful, so is CMF ( Cracked Matte Frog ).  ;)

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

River2Sea makes a decent knock off for $8, called the Bubble Pop. I have two, they are superb poppers. Never pulled the trigger on the Megabass version.

fishing user avatarStringjam reply :

The best expensive lure I ever bought was a Charlie-O

Find one in really nice shape and they go for over $40 a pop.

I bought this one for $25 and have caught the SNOT out of bass on it.  Very unique action.  If you like your fat cranks to act more like a lipless crank, this is the one.

Ya that's the way I justify sacrificing my wallet to the bait monkey. It turns out to be like .015 cents a day ;D ;D ;D

Those are a bargain compared to the Pop Max.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Everyone has their own favorites. If a $30.00 lure works for you and you have confidence in it, that's what should matter to you. I've never used one and probably never will. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. (especially at 3 times the price)
