I see allot of talk about rain gear but not so much about sun protection. I got my first case of sun poisoning this week end and am looking to invest in some good sun shorts and am wondering what everyone would suggest. I'm very warm blooded I get hot so I need something light and breathable I've got one gander special fishing short in short sleeve that I like just wondering how the long sleeves are like the Columbia pfg shirts. Or is there something better out there

Quality Sun protection is a solid plan.
I use Columbia, HUK, Simms & Buff gear. It's all good when worn & fit properly.
Skin Cancer is no joke.
btw - "Sun Shorts" seem mostly unproductive. Go with full length fishing pants.

Columbia pfg, patagonia ( expensive), free fly and northface are in my closet and many are long-sleeved and or hooded. It has taken 35 yrs to take the sun seriously

Research "UPF clothing" for lots of information. Most of it is expensive, but worth avoiding skin cancer. I've already had skin cancer & now currently utilize Simms, Columbia PFG, Buff, & Coolibar clothing.

The sun flat takes it out of you as well. Enjoy the nice morning with some light protection and then cover up. Neck buff, pfg shirt, glacier gloves, huk pants. BC I have not fully learned my lesson. I notice that I am fresher and more alert when I wear my gear. My stuff isnt super expensive and keeps me right.

I take it u meant shirts not shorts as shorts wouldn't offer much protection. I came from PA to TX and hate the hot weather and the sun is brutal down here. I own the name brand stuff mentioned by the other members above. I just ordered one of the Aftco ninja shirts but haven't received it yet. I ordered it because the buffs always leave the back of my neck exposed. The Huk buff I have I don't like, as I mentioned it climbs up leaving my neck exposed in the back and fogs my glasses. Hoping the Aftco shirt eliminates that.

it feels warmer than short sleeves when I'm indoors but when the sun is on me I feel cooler with it on. If it's really hot just wet the shirt and the evaporation will cool you off

On a side note.....the big difference in price with garments rated 15 through 50 is the feel.
Most inexpensive shirts feel like you are wearing a plastic bag. Single layer shirts require a breeze to cool you down, where as the most lined shirts creat an airspace that keeps you cooler When the breeze isn't blowing

I have a few Huk shirts and absolutely love them! They are very comfortable, not restricting, and keep you cool. They have pants and shorts ( I haven't used). They also have a hooded shirt made for warm weather, which would eliminate the exposed neck some have referred to.

Under Armour Coolswitch (formerly Isochill) long sleeve shirts are my go to. Mesh panels in the right places and the cooling fabric is pretty legit. Simms sungaiters are awesome because they are scalloped. They fit the neck perfectly and won't ride up like the straight tube shaped ones.

I choose to fish in the morning and again in the evening... I work indoors during the heat of the day. This seems to be a more comfortable arrangement for both the bass and myself.

How r the Simms buffs for breathing? I know they have holes in them so r they pretty non restricting when breathing and do they fog glasses? Thanks

They're better than any others I've used but they'll still fog your glasses if you have it up over your nose. That's pretty unavoidable though no matter what buff you have on. I always wear mine all the way up with only my nose exposed. I just put suncreen on it and my cheeks for extra protection.

It's an investment, but what's a few hundred dollars to prevent skin cancer with a few shirts, gloves, and buffs? Wear them religiously. The long sleeve stuff (Huk, UA, Columbia, etc) is not hot in the sun. Some of them even are designed to cool you the more you sweat.

I don't like buffs, mainly because I don't know how to fish without a cigar hanging out of my mouth.
So, I wear Columbia PFG hoodies. Not terribly expensive and fairly comfortable even on the hottest days. I fish right on through midday in August with these without any problems.

For pants I have a pair of Columbia convertible pants though I never actually convert them from pants to shorts. The polyester quick-dry material most sun pants are made out of doesn't insulate very well so your legs should never really feel hot, even if you're wearing long pants in 100 degree heat. If anything by keeping the direct sun off your legs they'll keep them cooler.
You might also want to check Sierra Trading Post (or sign up for their email flyers) for sun pants that won't cost an arm and a leg. I've gotten a couple of no-name brand sun pants from there and they function fine.

I spent all of June, July, August in the desert last year on the water, every day pretty much all day and wore these plus a neck gater. Super cheap, spf and really made a difference.

Got my Aftco ninja shirt the other day in my TW memorial day sale box. And I love it, it's gonna become my go to shirt here during the hot TX summers. Very silky soft light material, can breathe very easily without fogging glasses and I love the coverage u get from the gaiter hood combo. Will pick up another one next time they are on sale. Next purchase will be the Simms lightweight pants. I bought the 31 dollar Columbia gloves and hated them, exchanged them for the Glacier gloves and they are great for 17 bucks. Want to try the Simms guide gloves or the regular ones if anyone owns them and can comment on them I would appreciate it. I also have the Columbia camo boonie hat, but don't wear it. Yea it offers coverage on the back which a baseball cap doesn't but the brim isn't long enough on the front for keeping the sun out of your eyes like a baseball cap does. Hope this helps cuz the stuffs not cheap but needed if u fish in hot climates.

That's what my brother and I do - and sunblock is quite a bit cheaper than a new wardrobe for fishing.

You need to re-apply sunblock every couple of hours! Also an added benefit of wearing clothing to keep the sun out is it also keeps the freaking mosquitos off of you. Nothing annoys me more than mosquitos while fishing, or waking up the next morning to itchy bites.
Also found the link I was looking for I think it was posted on this site by someone a while back. Interesting all-in-one sun protection upper, that stays cool with the vented sleeves.

The CG long sleeve shirts from Target (duo-dry) are nice. Even nicer when you catch them on sale in the fall.
Like others have said, keep the sun off of you and feel cooler. Dip either the shirt or buff in the water, and go for a quick ride!
Just got some buffs from SA company. Used the five for fifteen deal.
Need to get some sun gloves next.

Since I have had skin cancer removed, I take it very serious. I wear a hat with a large brim and a flap that hangs down in the back to protect the neck along with sunglasses. I also wear Huk shirts, which is very comfortable and gloves.

Cabelas has a thin, balaclava that I wear. I also have, Simms hood and Gilz face mask. Cabelas also has sun gloves with leather strips on the palm, which I thought were the best sun gloves. I can't find anymore though. I saw another glove with leather palm, but I don't remember brand. Cabelas also had a glove with soft grip.
i haven't tried the Simms gloves where the palm is cut out. They might be good.
Shirts — I wear a Columbia short sleeve Omni freeze with separate sun sleeves. I go this route because you get ventilation up the sleeve. Sun sleeves can be found for a few dollars on a popular auction site.
Thin Columbia pants are good to keep your legs sun free.

I have rosacea so it is an absolute MUST I have the expensive sunscreen (titanium and zinc powder, not chemical sunblock) or a buff.
I usually wear a hooded Huk shirt, hat, sunglasses, buff or sunscreen, and light Under Armour pants.

Can't stand anything around my face but I have a hat with flaps all around my head, neck, lite weight Columbia shirt and pants, and when it's really hot and we want to relax in the shade, a sun top for our boat. best thing we bought for it.

Cabela's hooded sun shirt with the hook stretched over the brim of a lightweight ballcap. I will add a buff if it's really bright out, but the deep hood and big beard work surprisingly well, my neck never even really gets tan. I will wear tights under the shorts when I am in my yak, but I just hose on sunblock if I am on foot. I kinda want to get gloves next, i burned the backs of my hands a little this spring.
