So upon numerous recommendations that i add a Spook lure to my top water arsenal i see that there are several different models of spooks...which one is best? I am initially thinking that the Zara Spook would be best because it's got the right size at 4-1/2" and it's silent (already have a knocker in my Sammy's so wanted to be different) but reading reviews lot's of people like the Super Spook Jr. too. Not really sure which one i should get so some helpful advice would be appreciated!!!
Sometimes you can find them in a discount bin ! I would get both. Sometimes they don't want the larger presentation (which seems to be the new custom)
I swap the hooks on mine. I like VMC. But get the ones you Like, and that are in your budget.
A spook is Definitely a good tool to have in the bag !
I have a few...by far the best one for me is the full (regular?) size in clear. Looks like a gimmick at first, but it is my best producer.
I'm not fishing any deep clear waters though so not sure a clear would be the best choice for me. But what about the different models...Zara Puppy, Zara regular, Super Spook, Spook Jr. etc., etc., which are best?
I have 2 full-size Spooks in some kind of shad pattern with no knocker, a Spook Jr bass pattern with knocker and a Chug'n Spook Jr frog pattern with knocker. The Jrs seem far better at drawing strikes to me. My large ones are silent lures, but this is supposed to be a bait for covering a lot of water so one would assume fish need to locate it. How does that work? For me it doesn't.
Full disclosure: I live in an area with very little "clear" water. It's mostly stained to tea color around here. Baits that make some commotion work better for me. Another great topwater for me is the Chug Bug. It pops and/or walks depending on your retrieve.
I think color is very overrated for hard bait topwaters. And the hooks on the Jr size are very good quality.
They all catch fish . I asked this similar question about a jitter bug vs the jointed jitterbug and the best answer I got was
"Let the fish tell you"

Great, I'll take one shopping with me and have him show me which ones he likes...lol.
I meant get some and use them . And then you know which works best. .for you. Lol
I like the super spook jr. best.
I find the puppy hard to walk; If I'm using a bait that small, it will be a popper or propbait, not a walker.
I like this guy ^ . Don't know him personally but he always has somthing good to say

What about the regular Zara Spook...any insight on that one?
The Zara Spook is 4.5" and is the original plastic model, made to resemble the older wooden Zaragossa. Super Spook is a 5" bait with three hooks and heavy hardware. Super Spook Jr. is 3.5" and the Zara Puppy is 3"
If it were me I would buy a bone white and a black shore shad in the Spook Jr. and start there. The size is good and those two colors will cover a lot of fishing. Get familar with the way the bait moves in the water, the sound it makes and then you can adjust to a bigger bait, one that spits, or has rattles.
Great baits that don't break the bank.
Some people have recommended the silent spook (Zara) as the fish don't always like/want a loud knock so should I get both the Zara and the Super Jr.?
There's no right answer as with most 'xxx lure' questions. Conditions change daily and even hourly. Sun gets brighter, baro pressure rises, clouds move in,ect. Some days they want it silent, and some they don't. Some days they want a larger offering, and some they don't. Some days they want a certain pattern, and some they don't. Some days they don't want a walking 'spook' type bait at all, and some they do. That's all a part of fishing. Figuring out what the fish want on that given day. If it was that easy it wouldn't be much of a challenge. We'd all just tie on a 'insert color' spook each time we went out and catch 20 + fish that day.
I like the Heddon Zara Spook personally. Catch in clear and muddy water equally well. I used this frog pattern in a creek with great success recently and you can see the white/blue one tied on behind my broken rod in the second pic in dirty water. I use all different colors and have tried other brands too, but I keep coming back to the original Heddon. I love the walking action, it just flat out draws bites for me.
I own a ton of Spooks in different sizes but didn't catch a ton. Switched to a KVD Sexy Dawg (KVDs version of a Spook) in perch and started killing them and haven't stopped. I bought 2 spare and don't take my Spooks out anymore. I don't know what it is, the way it walks, if it's easier to walk, but the KVD is the best Spook type bait I've ever tried, albeit I haven't tried a ton.

All I have to share are half-baked preferences, not expertise!

It's great! My tastes on most baits run toward the smaller side, that's all.

I'm sure in some places and some times it matters a lot. I personally have never noticed a difference where I fish between silent and rattling/knocking versions of, really, any lure. Even the classic silent spook isn't strictly silent -- it splashes around, the hooks jangle, etc

Big Bass
In nearly 35 years of throwing it I don't think the knocker matters one way or the other.
Buy a couple regular and a couple spook jr's. As far as color I'm not sure it matters any but I like bone, black shore minnow. clear and a color we call Christmas Tree in the ozarks, although I'm not sure what Heddon calls it.
The spook has a different profile than a vixen or a sexy dawg or a dog x ect.. some days they want it.some days they want something else.
I throw the saltwater model some too.
Bone super spook. A top producer up here.
I'd get a super spook jr in bone or a simple shad color. That'll get your confidence up in the spook line up and you can go crazy with size and color combo's. The Jr model already comes with a feather tail too.
My favorite is the one knocker spook in bone, then I'll add my own feathered treble.
If you get the original spook, I'd suggest adding split rings to the hooks.

is that a veritas? if so i have broken 4 of them.

Yep, you nailed it! I was trying to horse my lure off a submerged log and SNAP!

I broke 2 of them just casting, one I was just pulling on my jig in the left hand BARELY flexing the tip as im going to the next dock and it snapped. The other I was hung, trying to get it out and it snapped. My buddy, broke his the next week being hung too. Moral of the story is: St. Croix for life lol
I like the super spook jr with the knocker in it. I have one that has absolutely been through the ringer and I'm still catching fish on it. I don't use the super spook or regular spook because I just have never seen a difference there, and the knocker makes the jr really easy to throw long distances.
I will occasionally throw a zara puppy for finicky schooling fish, they are not hard to walk if you are fishing 10lb test or lighter.
Super Spook Jr. in bone with the dressed treble is my favorite and best-producing plug
If you have stained water the chugnspook or the one knocker spook could be a good option. Will give them something to hear to help locate the bait, and the one knocker will be a different sound than the current rattling version you have. Clear or stained water, I prefer bone or the g-finish colors (your local stores may not carry them).
On 9/2/2016 at 1:55 AM, Haze said:the one knocker will be a different sound than the current rattling version you have
I actually don't have a spook yet so I don't have a silent or rattling version yet. I do have a couple of Lucky Craft Sammy 100's that I recently got but haven't had a chance to fish yet but these will be my first ever spooks that I buy when I buy them.
Gotcha, I read your OP wrong. Good luck when you get to fish them, let us know how it goes!
If you just want to try one, I'd start with the Super Spook Jr. Great size that will get bit most everywhere. Another point that hasn't been made yet; if you're new to walking baits, the "knock" of the Spook Jr. will make learning a piece of cake. You have the sound reinforcement beside just the visual coordination - remember the kid learning to fly fish with a metronome in "A River Runs Through It?" You can learn and get good at "walking the dog" with your eyes closed

I have only tried a few walking baits, but the spook line-up has been by far the best producing. If I could only pick one it would be a super spook junior with a loud knocking sound (every spook I've tried sounded different, shake them and listen for the loudest sound in store if possible) like T-9 and everythingthatswims said. I mostly use them in the post spawn period and for schooling bass in the summer and fall.

Unless ya fishing for tight eyes!
The XT walks easily & is a great complement for the Saltwater Chug Bug
Postspawn, big grass flats where the grass is still under surface, throw those big boys & out fish your frog buddies!

Bwahahaha.
I'd try the super spook junior in bone if I had to pick just one. But I use both sizes of super spooks, the original rattling spook, the chug n spook, swayback spook, and the puppy and I've caught fish on all of them. The super spook Jr in bone, RI barely legal vixen, the smaller strike king kvd bait, the sammy in all sizes, the skitterwalk, zip baits irony, and the lunker punker are the top water walkers I use regularly and catch fish on. The super spook jr, sammy, and irony have been producing the best this year. I really like walking baits and so do the river smallies and stripers this time of year
one knocker is good.
What are the differences between the freshwater and saltwater versions of the spook/spook jr. ?
Usually it's just the hooks. Saltwater baits have corrosion resistant coatings on the hooks.

So are the hooks still bad and should be replaced?
That's up to you. The hooks work fine for me, but I prefer VMC Vanadium Inlines. I also add a split ring at the hook hanger to free up hook movement. The Super and Super Jr. already have this mod in place.

Yeah, those are what I'm looking at.
It's hard to tell what you're looking at - there's like 12 different "spook" baits by Heddon. Add the Chug'n Spook, and the One Knocker, and the list gets even longer. There's really not much to discuss. I have two Zara Spooks. They're over decade old. Did the hook mod, have literally caught hundreds of fish on each. One is chrome/blue, and the other frog pattern.
I have most of them in different colors. The spook with the prop works good. Again it's my 1-2-3 rip n pause presentation. A nice even rip three times then pause. If no action fish it slower with a longer pause.
I picked up a discounted producers orange colored spook. It's hot here.

I'm looking at the Super Spook and Super Spook Jr.
I'd get one of each, and learn to walk them. That's all there is to it.
I have settled on the Sexy Dog Jr. - easy to walk , great action , good colors , good build quality and great overall value .
If you fish heavy braid on casting rods, the saltwater Spook Jr is often a buck at Walmart this time of year like all pradco lures.....I just picked up a ton of lures and they had the right colors.
I prefer saltwater hooks since I use the spooks on casting gear so I like the Xcalibur Tx3 Treble Hooks, but make sure they have split rings.
For spooks, Bone, Black Shore or black shiner, Chart, White and chart...I would say that covers it....Super Spook Jr is probably what I use most, but also the standard size one knocker and silent, I have never noticed a difference.
If I want a loud walking lure I use the Rebel T-10 T-20 with a lead rattle that is as loud as my expensive Walkers and I pick the Rebel over some $15 models 9/10 times since it just walks so easy like the spook.
Color is a confidence thing, Clear is good because you can color them with markers on the water. But clear is good because fish think it is a school of glass minnows or in stained water or clear, they can't tell the size of the lure. I use bigger lures in clear, and I seem to do better. I always add chart to the belly, just having that tint seems to help.
Bone colored spook Jr. was the best selling bait when I worked at a tackle shop for spooks. People like the saltwater spook Jr for $5. Chug bug was the second best selling walking bait. You only need maybe 3" of water above weeds which is why it is popular on Stick Marsh and in the south.
I went with a freshwater Super Spook Jr. in Bone with a dressed rear hook for now but do plan to add more as I can!
That bait will catch you a lot of fish if you take the time to learn it.
