Plug knockers like this photo here (or you can find homemade ones cheap on ebay)... this one has a long line attached. I just cut it off because I am going to retie the knot. (There are some cheap ones on ebay that don't even have a line, you just slide it down your fishing line and hope it all comes up.)
Anyone come up with a tidy solution to storing these and the long line? I could wrap the line around a piece of cardboard or something... just wondering if anyone came up with something ingenious, lol. I forgot to try the bow and arrow method yesterday, lol, but this guy got my crankbait out right away.
Always looking for ways to lessen space for tackle!
I think I will buy one of the cheap ebay ones, they appear to be lighter, but if it works, that's good because it weighs less in my tackle box! This guy here is pretty heavy.
I have mine on a 26 foot retractable dog leash!

LOL, I could put it on an old casting reel, but that defeats 'lightweight and small.' I just wrapped it around some cardboard and added an rubber band around it but it's cumbersome. I guess I will put into a food baggy to keep it from unravelling.

My problem was every time I used it, the cord would end up tangled. This solution solves that problem! Quick and easy to use.

dog leash is a good idea.... i would also suggest a chalk line box, heavy enough cord on it and often times they're available in 100' and you can reel it back....

Do chalk line boxes let out with pressure? Will the knocker be heavy enough to pull it out and still work(knock the bait loose?)
Jeff
Snoopy pole with braid?

i'm sure it depends on which one you get, but i had some fancy pants Irwin tools ones that i got for free that would let out with the pressure.
basically same principle as this one, which is the one i have (although i admit i hardly ever use the thing)

I like to use a fairly stout cord, like parachute cord rather than braid. Braid has cut into my fingers one too many times, I don't use that any more. I've seen a couple of semi=pros here in Missouri use an anchor rein, permanently mounted somewhere close to the bow of the boat where it was easy to get to.
MY current set up is one of those H shaped brackets used for storing extension cords. It easily holds enough cord and is relatively easy to deploy. I've considered one of those dog leash set ups, but I wonder if it would really be any easier to deploy than my current set up.
@Fishes in trees maybe not easier to deploy, but much easier to retract/store!
Jeff
Bill Dance has one that comes with a basic reel to store the line.
I still prefer the telescopic fiberglass retrievers. They fit into the rod storage when not being used, or when you need it on a regular basis I can keep it right next to my rods on deck. I like the telescopic version better because it allows me more of a connection to feel what I'm hung up on and I think I can get more baits freed with it.
Also, I wouldn't go the cardboard route for storing your cord. The first time you use it you'll bring the cord up wet. Next time you use it, it's going to turn to mush. I think 00 mod or fishes have better solutions to cord storage.
I put mine on an old, round baitcaster and mounted it on an ice fishing rod. It's not exactly lightweight and small, but it is convenient, and it works for me. The retractable dog leash is genius!

i used the same orange extension cord holder, but that could be a pain at times. i bought a cheapo kite string holder that i now use for my anchor line (550 paracord) and it works surprisingly well. it spins freely from the handle so that you can essentially "crank" it back up.
cannot for the life of me remember where i found it though. looks about like this:
I like the dog leash idea and am going to get one .
Dog leash has worked everytime i needed it.
I have the Bill Dance version, but the reel broke after a decade of good use. I tied the line to a dowel, and stuff it all into a peanut butter jar.

yeah but creamy or crunchy?
i already know it's JIF because you're a choosy mom....
Not having the chains on the knocker makes it far less effective.
I followed some advice I got on BR a year or two ago and put mine on a chalkline. I still do need to replace the chalkline's cotton line with some stronger dacron cord.
Tight lines,

The question was about plug knocker storage. I also carry an extendable pole. I think you need both.

Thanks, good idea! I see one at Lowe's for $6 and it has polyester line, so, the line might be okay.
The dog leash idea is good, it's just not the smallest idea. An el cheapo dog leash breaks easily for dog use, but for this, it might last a long time, and it might be stronger line of all ideas.
Whomever suggested the H-shape thingy, that doesn't take up much room. Can put the entire gizmo in a baggy.
The telescoping pole, I haven't used one, but if they work good, that's an advantage to having to maneuver a large bass boat if you are in stumpy waters. Plus, you could use to yank a lure out of a tree. Been there, done that, lol.

Smooth Jif. If I want crunch, I add potato chips.

Re-label that thing and make a million bucks! Before long people will be saying, "I walk my dog on one of the those lure retriever thingies."
My concern with the dog leash or chaulk line would be getting your lure hooked on an old catfish rig, then getting your knocker hooked on the same line. Not sue what the pound rating is on those items, but I don't know if they could straighten a 1-2X treble or break 25# catfish line. Might lose the whole thing!
I need to fix my home made plug knocker. I had it on 80# braid on an old $5 reel mounted to a broken rod but I though the braid was too thin. I have some 1/8" nylon cordage to use but I need a new way of containing it. I think I might use the "handle" off of one of my jerk strings for duck hunting. You can see it here http://www.cabelas.com/product/RigEm-Right-Step-Up-Jerk-Rig/1993314.uts?productVariantId=4118793&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=43-159530391-2&WT.tsrc=PPC&WT.mc_id=GoogleProductAds&WT.z_mc_id1=04131221&rid=20

This is the one I have been using for a couple years and I just leave it in the boat glove box for storage.

See that hook on mine. Will break through gill net. Shouldn't have a problem with it!
Jeff
Mine has that as well.
