Jigs for fall bass 2025

I've seen a lot of articles with top 5 fall baits being:
jerkbait
crankbait
spinnerbait
swimbait
top water
how does the jig hold up?
i fished a jig late last fall and it was super slow to find fish, but once I did I caught some nice size and numbers.. just seems as tho it's not as popular a bait as in the summer from the pro's articles.
Thoughts?

I caught 5 yesterday on a SK bluegill swim jig . I was using a rage menace trailer. None were real big.. but.. one was decent

I pretty much fish all lures year round. I pick my lure, and lure color based the following: sunny vs cloudy, calm vs windy, clear vs vegetation, clear vs stained vs muddy water, day vs night, and most importantly for me, what is the forage. Other factors may come in to play but those are the main ones. I choose lure type, and lure color based on these factors and will change it up depending on if the fish are responding to what I first chose. I've caught bass on early-August mornings this year on a buzzbait, and I just caught another yesterday on the same buzzbait. 80 degrees vs 50 degrees. Bath water vs colder water. One similarity between the two days - it was windy. Frogs are another one I throw year round because they can mimic a frog, or a trapped bait fish.

I would be very interested in hearing more about potential topwater techniques to use through the ice in January.

My "Jig" fishing in the fall is definitely a slow presentation.
Once the lakes here are done turning over, they get super clear (again) and the water temps are usually some where around the mid 40's give or take a few degrees. The best "search" bait for me then is a blade bait - and second place isn't really close.
But once I find a few and if they are snuggled up to cover (usually wood) - a jig is the way to go. I usually go lighter (1/4 or 3/8's) as in the chilly water rate of fall plays a big role (usually does). Slower is good; along with a tantalizing glide to the bottom. A couple of seasons ago I started playing around with hair & plastics in this scenario. The Punisher Hair Jig with a 4 inch Reins Punching Predator works well. It's a combo used by Elite Pro angler Paul Meuller and it's been a solid producer for me.

Those hair jigs look sweet. Gotta pick up a few of those for sure!!

Nope....jig suck in the fall....I WOULD NOT throw them at all if I were you...you won't catch a darn thing...EVER!

Always gotta push it to the extreme?
During your fishing season (ice in to ice out) ya never use any combination of the lures?

Nice Bass - And judging by your attire (or lack there of) and the color of the landscape behind you (still quite a bit of green) - you're probably Pre-turn over. Or at least that would be for me here - - So I'd still be using a standard 1/2 ounce offering right there and my trailer would be a little more active as well. Love that Jig bite "THUMP"

River2Sea is coming out with a winter version of the "Whopper Plopper". It will be called the "Whopper Chopper" and can be used until the ice gets more than 6" thick.

Indeed those are mostly pre-turnover, but I caught some decent ones last year post turnover on a jig, and another guy who fishes all the way up to ice out alternates between a crankbait and a jig right up until he can't get on the lakes anymore. He's one heck of a fisherman and my one uncle was his tourney partner before he passed away. This last summer he had taken me out and showed me a few things and has never given me a reason not to believe what he says.

Sorry, Catt -- I'm just picking on you for answering questions with questions, and not simply saying what you mean. That and I think its funny to hear a Louisiana guy tell everybody their lures should all work equally well year round. I'll stop.

I use a jig from ice-out til ice-in, they vary throughout the year, but I always, ALWAYS, have a jig tied on,..its the #1 bass bait in my eyes, and the big girls seem to gravitate to them as well.
Why wouldnt you throw one in late fall? On the main page, read the crayfish article, interesting.

Fish what works for ya. Don't disregard the seasonal lists of most effective baits, but don't abandon one just cause it's not on it. I don't think these dang fish play by the rules we apply to them anyway
You'd be hard pressed to convince me that there is any fish able condition where the right combination of jig with the right presentation won't catch fish.

A jig is very rarely a bad idea. It's scored me some nice fish lately. In fact I've only had 2 rods on the deck my last couple trips to one particular lake nearby, one of them has been a homemade 5/8oz brush jig in junebug color.

I use hair year around, if they bite it in cold water they bite it in warm water.
Like it when I am the only angler feeding bass what they like, real hair & pork.

Once upon a time I used marabou most, hair second. I tied my own and still think if I were left with one material to catch fish with, it would be marabou. One of my favorites was a marabou jig with a small pork strip.
In the 80's "living rubber" became the rage and it caught bass. I originally used it sans trailer! Imagine that! I soon went to pork and have always used pork since. Nothing moves like prepared pork, except marabou. What marabou lacks is bulk -that pressure wake that hair, rubber, and pork can roll out behind the bait. I think that's one of the reasons jigs can be such good big fish baits.
