Anyone Else Disappointed In This Month's Mystery Tackle Box? 2025

fishing user avatartherealnutmeg reply :

Hi there everyone, new poster here, blah blah blah...

So, I was excited to see my Mystery Tackle Box came in the mail today. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I read somewhere that the goal of Mystery Tackle Box (and its way of differentiating itself from Tackle Grab) was the fact that it they included sample packs from smaller companies in their boxes with the goal of helping their subscribers discover some new baits.

This month's box was full of lures from none other than...

Berkley.

A Wal-Mart standard, Berkley equipment is available most everywhere. Before I start my rant, let me tell you exactly what was in my box.

- 1 300yd spool of 14lb Trilene XT Low-Vis Green

- Flicker Shad (Fire Tiger)

-Gulp Alive! Marinade, Shad Scented

- 8 Pack Fight'n Bug, Okochobee Craw

- 15 Pack Money Maker, Junebug

Now, you all might not be with me on this, but a few points I'd like to make.

Most people aren't going to use or need 14 pound line, let alone XT in Green. Just seems like some 8-10 pound clear would make a lot of people happier, or maybe a trial spool of Fireline or something? I'm sure some of you will use it but it's going straight to the neighbor kid for me.

The Flicker Shad was a nice addition that I don't have a problem with, except that I just bought 7 of them at the BPS Spring Classic for $2.79 apiece or so.

The "marinade" is where they really messed up here in my opinion. The package directly states "not recommended for plastic baits". According to them, this includes ANY plastic baits (including Berkley branded products) apart from Gulp! and Gulp! Alive. Now, maybe I'm alone on this one, but I don't need to be creating any hybrid-species scents involving nightcrawler ooze and shad juice. It honestly doesn't seem like a useful product to me because the tubs you can buy are already drenched in the stuff and the bags have plenty as well. To be honest, the only time I would use this is in a bag of Gulp minnows, even though they seem to have plenty of ooze in the first place. This is basically them forcing you to buy some Gulp! or Gulp! Alive product at some point to use the thing.

The Fight'n Bug seems good to me, but like I'm sure some of you noticed, I believe it's a full pack and I would have preferred some samples.

The Money Makers look pretty cool and I've used them before a bit. The 15 Pack doesn't bother me here because I'll use 'em, but I'm sure someone else is probably a bit peeved at this.

Now, what makes me mad here is not that they are giving us a sponsored box. That's what this whole thing is about. The fact that they gave us products which, for the most part, are in stock at your local Wal-Mart, really ticks me off. Not to mention I could get the Flicker Shads for $3 apiece or less not but a month ago. That reminds me! Powerbait and Havoc baits were something like $1.25 a bag after rebate ($3 before, maybe) and the line I think BPS had for $5. I can't think of a BPS on earth that wouldn't carry this stuff.

Anyone else got the same feels here? I'm just curious what you guys think. Next month, I hope MTB will be changing it up with some smaller brands and some different baits. On a side note, I feel like line is something too angler-specific to be including in MTBs. So many people use so many different things that the chances it'll get used are slim to none, bar a 300yd spool of 8 pound maybe or 30 pound braid.

P.S. to MTB: The removal of the pricing card was sly but did not go unnoticed please bring that back and change it up next month :mad10:

my mistake, didn't notice prices were included in the Dibble Digest.

fishing user avatarMatthew2000 reply :

Why can people never just be happy. You have obviously never tried the marinade, but complain how it stinks before you use it, then complain they have stuff you can get anywhere and probably used already. You don't want a full pack of baits ? Oh im sorry take 4 out and throw them away. Who is mad about a 15 pack of baits ?

And you found a sale so you should not send it to you. They don't personalize a box for you saying I know you use this all the time or oh he will never use this crap. Oh no you can find stuff at Walmart, obviously you would never try the marinade so they give it to you so you will try it. Rant over. Welcome to the forums.

fishing user avatarBrnnoser6983 reply :

.. Wow..

Well. 14 lb line works great, and you can always use it for back spooling. But it is strange to see someone complain about getting sample packs.

Not all tackle company's are going to have a winner every month and they certainly can't please everyone. Some are happy with known names others rather not see one. But with that being said if you paid less than what the box is worth be happy. If you want specific items go to TW where you buy and get what you want.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Geez...

It sounds like an interesting mix and great value to me. Maybe you will be happier next month or maybe this

just won't work out for you. And BTW, although i don't actually fish XT, this is a VERY popular brand and size

for baitcasting.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Take it up with the company, I see no other useful alternative here...

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Dang...I would love to be able to afford MTB. That sounds like an awesome box. As far as I know, they're the first to put line in their boxes.

If you were disappointed, I'll PM you my address. Feel free to send them to me.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Oh, and by the way, Havoc baits are not included in the rebate. Made that mistake myself.

fishing user avatarHardcoreBassin reply :

I'm not a member of MTB, or any tackle subscription, at this point, but that sounds like an awesome box geared toward spring fishing.  The Fightn' Bug will probably be great for pre-spawn and the moneymaker would probablybe great for pre-spawn and during spawn.  Like I said, seems like an awesome early spring box to me...

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

lol

This is exactly why I don't belong to any of the grab bag programs- if I want something, I go buy it.

If you sign up for a grab bag, you're going to get random stuff- some of it you won't be into.  Surprise, surprise.

fishing user avatarplumworm reply :

Wow, I must be nuts. I just purchased 4 300yd. spools of #14 xt. green because they didn't have it on a 1000 yd. spool. Now, I will never use it because "nobody else uses it".

Mystery is defined as something that is a secret, something where there is no clear explanation, something difficult to understand or explain or something unexplainable or unsolvable.

Sounds like you got exactly what you signed up for.

fishing user avatarbassinOUT89 reply :

The heck you crying about anyway.. You got your box 1 day after shipping.

fishing user avatargardnerjigman reply :

OP,

I'm thinking that perhaps you are not ever going to be happy with such service, regardless the company. Seems you are just too picky and would rather get your baits yourself. That line is very popular, and I used it almost exclusively until I switched to seagar fluoro.

If you have an issue with the box, go straight to MTB. Good people and truly care about customers. Give them a chance to make you happy (not that I think that's possible), before you slam them publicly.

Add on:

I find it hilarious that on January 20th you were asking for advice on ANY tackle to buy and willing to buy off our recommendations, but do nothing but rant and rave over a service that does just that... Common sense is so rare it should be classified as a super power!

fishing user avatart4bama reply :

I'm not gonna kick you around cause you've taken a beating already but those colors sounds really good on the plastics I mean they could have sent you something like hot pink fight'n bug and chartreuse money makers. The XT is perfect for baitcasters 14lbs I wouldn't mind it being heavier test but that's difference in where we live and fish. My son subscribes to Mystery tackle box and he always enjoys what he gets but I'll check see what he thinks about this months.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

The whole reason I want to sign up for mystery tackle box is the MYSTERY aspect, sounds like you got a pretty cool box....

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

So half the items you would use at least, another you are mad because you already bought some and another is line that you got to give to a neighbor so not sure of the issue.  were you expecting megabass or something?

fishing user avatarthomas15 reply :

I don't get MTB but I do get LTB. While I probably will not use everything alot, I think I will try everything at some point. I have tackle that I bought 20 years ago that I never tried. But I would urge the OP to at least give the tackle a fair chance, you never know.

And I also use Trilene 14# on one of my bait casters and would be pleased if I were to open one of my LTB and find a spool in there. Finally during the dark days of this winter it was fun opening the box and seeing what is inside.

Thanks for saying what is on my mind. I won't have to go on someones youtube and watch a boring unboxing video like I usually do, as I don't get my box until the 15th or so.

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

A few questions for the OP.

1. What did you expect to receive each month?

2. Do you currently have any baits that "you bought" that you've either used sparingly or not at all?

3. Would you be happier If you simply bought the baits "you" want?

4. In the Interest of forum harmony, and you need to be honest with yourself here, do you think It wise to air your complaint to a bunch of guys/girls on the forum or would the prudent course of action be to communicate your concerns with the good folks at MTB?

5. If you had received a box with everything you wanted would you have made a post praising the folks at MTB?

Lastly, always remember, we all have the "choice" to suscribe or not. :)

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

If you have a complaint or concern with a company, please take it up with them instead of ranting about it on the forums.
