Better Deal Versus Local Store 2025

fishing user avatarWiregrassRiverRat reply :

Do you go for the better deal or do you try to support you local stores?

This is obviously within a 2-10% of the price range, but where is your allegiance?

fishing user avatarbasshole8190 reply :

I do a little bit of both... i only go online if i can't find what i need locally the anticipation of waiting for packages kills me

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Yeah, it depends on what the item is, how much it costs and how quickly "I have to have it."   I do try to support the privately owned local places as much as possible though.  The problem is the local stores often don't have the selection of the online retailers.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Usually the deal if it it's a significant purchase.  Local stores are good for a quick fill in item and I don't mind spending a few extra bucks on something.

fishing user avatarBassnChris reply :

I am in agreement with Sir.

Local is ok for last minute type purchases.

Any purchase that is significant in price I will purchase online if there is a savings.

My finances are limited and finite.......I wish I had the financial resources to buy everything I want/need without consideration of savings.

I have come to the conclusion I will never be financially independent.........but, I'm a lot closer to not being broke, if I pinch my pennies and save where I can.

This is my take too.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I always buy some tackle on the road. 00 Mod and I recently hit Big Red's on our way to the White River.

This is a tackle shop with hometown charm and a good selection of baits and lures, both domestic and

JDM. When we were there Red had MegaStrike Vision 110 FX on sale for $17 and most impressively,

a HUGE supply of the new Gary Yamamoto hard baits.

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

if it is something like a trolling motor , price is king.

if it is plastics or normal stuff, I'll shop anywhere I can get it when I want it.

fishing user avatarcajunpapi reply :

ON LINE NOT TO MANY LOCAL SHOPS LEFT. I TRY TO USE STORES AROUND LAKE WHEN I CAN

fishing user avatarArv reply :

I mostly support forum members.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Mostly local stores as i am not one to buy things online for fishing unless i know exactly what i am wanting and the price is to good to be true.  I have also found that the majority of the time my local shoo if they order something they will match or at least get close enough for me to order from them instead of a big box guy.

fishing user avatarAK-Jax86 reply :

Good deal I mean isn't that human nature?

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

I try to work with my local guys as much as possible, but if I can get it much less expensive, or something that they just can't get, I go elsewhere.

fishing user avatarCKFishin reply :

I'll support local depending on the price difference. some stuff I just can't justify how much more they want.

fishing user avatarMike2841 reply :

Most of my tackle I'll buy from the store, but I find that you can find better deals on rods and reels online.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

I had a local shop that I tried to support. He never had what I was looking for. He would order it for me, but it would take forever, and sometimes would never show up. The owner was not customer friendly.  My point is, I support business' that take care of the customers. If it's a mom and pop shop or a big box store, they have to treat me right to get my business.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

I'm buddies with my local shop owner, he doesn't do much fresh water so I do all of my saltwater through him.

fishing user avatarKyakR reply :

Local. I really enjoy the fishing lore, stories and advice....just talking with clerks and owners I know.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

We try to support our local stores. Always have.

The Internet has opened up many doors for shoppers making it easy to shop in your home, avoid sales taxes and have a much broader product base to consider.

Local stores may not have the exact product you are seeking so I do not feel guilty when I go to a big box store or Internet to try to locate exactly what I want.

Today I will order the White House Christmas ornaments via the Internet as you cannot find them in Richmond.

Will go to BPS this week to purchase a girl's toy for my granddaughter to balance what we got our grandson to avoid a fight.

I do like to shop the smaller businesses on the Internet for fishing gear that is not available in my geographical area.

fishing user avatarS Hovanec reply :

I would support a local store if it carried what I wanted. Problem is, nothing local or within a reasonable distance has what I need. I'd say that 95% of my bait purchase is on-line. The other 5% is local hand-pour plastics.

fishing user avatar5dollarsplash reply :

If I can find it online and at the local store and its a more than say $50, I'll ask the local shop how close they can come in price.  I'd rather support a family business, but at the same time have to support myself and my family too.  Recently picked up a rod from the local guy, marked $220.00, Gander had it on sale for around $170 and the local guy matched it.  If he hadn't matched or came down I'd go with Gander.

On baits and line, its more of a as needed basis.  If I plan ahead I order online, if not its the local shop.

fishing user avatarzachb34 reply :

I'm with Arv I like to buy here on the forums.

fishing user avatarRAMBLER reply :

My credit card points let me shop at Gander Mountain for free.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I try to save when I can but I shop online and at my mom n pop local bait shop. My local bait shop has discounts on older new lures. I give these to the kids.

Since my disability(bad knees) is becoming worse I rely on online shopping more and more. I really miss walking into the bigger chain stores browsing. As long as I can fish a few feet from the car at my local hot spots I'm good to go.

fishing user avatarMacP reply :

I make a few $50 purchases at Tackle Warehouse throughout the year, 3 this year.  I'll probably make another TW order during the holiday savings.  I've probably spent $150 bucks between Dick's and Academy this year.  They had some killer sales!  I've probably spent $250 at Bass Pro this year.  My local store usually gets $20 bucks from me a week for 9 months out of the year.  I've bought a few things off the forums.  I've bought some things from forum sponsers. I spread it out pretty well I think.

I buy stuff I need or want when it's on sale usually.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I start by going to the local stores.  If they do not have what I am looking for then I go online.
