10Xd Replacement Trebles 2024

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

I know there are a few guys here that already have these baits so I was just curious to see what trebles you're using with these. Surely you aren't going to fish with stock hooks (gasp!!) . I picked up my first one this afternoon and decided to go with 3/0 Owners. I don't think they'll effect the action but I'll have to wait until I fish it to know for sure. Pay no attention to the DD22 in the pic, I took the pic to show a buddy how big the 10XD's are. He hadn't heard about them yet.

I just saw these in Dick's for the first time not too long ago. My god that is a massive crankbait.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I'm trying two different models; a 2/0 Mustad KVD short shank on one bait and a 2/0 Owner stinger 36  - hope to be feeding them to a few Brutes next week.

When you look at it like this - it's not THAT big . . . .

(this was before the hook replacement)

When compared to a 5 & 6xd it looks quite sizable.

Next to the 6 inch Bull Shad - not so much.

The photo is - Top to Bottom: 5XD - 6XD -10XD - 6inch Bull Shad - 10XD - 6XD

I'll be very interested to know your findings. I probably wouldn't have gone with the 3/0 ST-36's myself but I already had them so I just figured why buy something else before at least giving these a shot. If I have a lot of snagging problems I'll switch to something else. Let me know.

I have a crankbait easily as big as a 10 if not bigger that looks like a shad I should sell one of you guys. Looks very similar to this if not this exact lure.

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

These baits are getting out of hand, everyone will have to buy new "heavy" crankbait rods just to throw these things, and don't think the tackle companies won't come out with rods just for these big baits because they will. I'm really surprised Quantum doesn't have a KVD Tour rod for the Strike King baits already. If these bigger cranks take off, I'm sure they will its already hard enough to find the 10XD's, rod companies will be on this in a flash. I'm not saying it isn't warranted, heck I'll probably be one of the first in line to get one, all I'm saying is fishing is really getting expensive.

I haven't been fishing all that long, since 2001, but it sure seems like everything was much more simple and less expensive then. I'm sure this can be said of any time an angler started fishing though, if you started 20 years ago I'm sure it seemed to expensive in 2001 to them. I'm not saying tackle companies are necessarily doing this but I'm just going to use Shimano as an example, they've started marketing "fishing systems" for the salt water guys where they make the line, lure, rod, & reel for it. They promote it like you have to have exactly what they are selling or the technique isn't going to work properly. Now as everyone knows I'm a huge Shimano guy so I'm not bashing them in any way, I just used them as an example, all I'm pointing out is the fact that tackle companies may be coming out with new products like these very oversized crankbaits to not only sell the bait but everything else that goes along with it.

Which part? Is it crazy or did you just not understand?

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

You act like it hasn't been occurring for years already. Shimano has the waxwing series, which in truth, isn't going to perform as well outside of having the exact equipment. The same goes for the LJV series of paired rod, reel, and lines.

It is no different than having a dedicated swimbait rod, or for the a bama rig. Having a mag crankbait rod is no different than any other specialized tool. It is as expensive or as cheap as you want to make it. Don't want to buy a rod that can properly handle 10XDs, don't. Better yet, don't fish them at all.

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

I understand its been happening for years that's why I brought it up here. I'm also glad I'm talking to an expert who helped design the waxwing & LVJ systems of fishing and knows the exact ins and outs of it all.

You also certainly won't be telling me what I can or can't fish. If you don't like a post in a thread I started don't coment on it or, to use your phrase, "better yet" don't even read'em.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

I do know the ins and outs, that's what I get paid to do. It's the principle of a system. And you're correct, there are a large number of rod makers that are already producing mag crankbait rods.

I'm in no way telling you what to fish or what not to fish. I simply made a comment based on your response, insinuating that if you don't agree with the manufacturing practice of rod and reel makes specializing gear, don't fish the specialized gear. It's not meant as snide, or as a prickly remark. It has nothing to do with me liking or not liking the comment, it has nothing to do with anything other than the subject at hand.

Moreover, the specialization of techniques and tactics- leading eventually to the specialization of tackle is what conti he's to advance this sport. It's also a situation in which we, as anglers, benefit from the design principles that manufacturers hold. Be it Daiwa, Shimano, Pure Fishing or any other. When they make advancements in gear and goodies we only benefit. The 10XD being a very specific situation that previously was near impossible to repeat. I'm willing to go to great lengths to catch more and bigger fish, I see the specialization of gear as being just that.

Are the SKT Magnums for sale  yet ? I'm very interested in these as well.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I've been looking as well but with out any luck I'm sorry to report.

The most recent info is still the same stuff that was released back at the first of the year.

I'm hoping to get in on the initial batch . . .

No I bought it a few years back because at the time there were no large crankbaits on the shelves. Ive thrown it a couple times, it needs a HEAVY rod. Ive never fished it long enough to see how it would do but the recent trends have me thinking about it. I also have another made by the same company which is a large perch.

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

Thanks guys. I'm also looking at oversize traps this year like the Lucky Craft LVR D 30 which is 4" and weighs app. 2 ozs.

FYI for those interested in the SKT Magnums according to the guy I talked to today at Tackle Warehouse it sounds like the new Lucky Craft cranks are coming out the end of March and will sell for $ 19.99.

Also, for anyone looking for a rod to sling it with Kistler has one listed on their website in the KLX line that is designed for the oversized cranks.

 Thanks for release update -

No doubt Kislter makes a nice stick, but the old surf caster in me says to deliberately make a long rod designed to throw 2 ounce baits with a shorter handle is a mistake.

The description of the rod (see link) talks about being able to use more of the rod to cast.

Look at the design of the rods built for the Musky anglers - rourinely built with longer handles.

This is to reduce the effort required by the angler and thus enables the caster to have more daily on the water casting endurance.

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

It's probably matter of what you are comfortable with, that said I have a couple of swimbait rods with the longer handles so I can go either way. I guess I will find out soon as I plan on getting this rod as I'm stoked about fishing these baits and I've been interested in the KLX line when I first heard about it. I believe Kistler will also do customs as well but it's probably going to come with hefty price tag.

I'm pretty excited to fish these baits as well. They should really up a guys odds of catching quality fish.

I don't remember exactly, but it seems like they were in the $20.00 range.

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

Yeah, Bird dog has it right. I read somewhere they are $19.99 each.

fishing user avatarzip pow reply :

I'm using stock hook and a skeet Reese magnum crankbait rod two sins in one cast

fishing user avatarMurv reply :

I'm curious, would there be negative effects if I took the original hooks off and put #4's or even #6's on it? I'm thinking about doing that in case a smaller fish decides to inhale it, and hopefully I'll get easier hook penetration.
