hi im trying to use a rod/reel just for spinnerbait and was wondering whats a good setup for it. like what length size. what action rod and etc. I don't want a setup to break my ankle.

I recently started using the Abu Garcia Ike delay series 6’6 MH Moderate for spinnerbaits and squarebills. I’ve only caught a couple of fish on it but I’m confident in saying it has plenty of power to set the hook with a spinnerbait and flex when using a squarebill.

Answer a few questions and you’ll have your answer; What size baits will you be throwing? What type of line will you be using? Will you be casting to specific targets, deep water structure, or for distance? You’ll get better accuracy from a shorter rod, more distance from a longer one (generally). The less stretch your line has, the more flex you’ll want in the rod. The more stretch it has the faster the action and longer the rod you’ll be wanting to use.

A good all purpose spinnerbait rod would be a 6’6”M/H power with a Mod/Fast tip rated for 1/4oz. To 3/4oz. Some brands offer technique specific rods and the majority of them fit the bill nicely.

I prefer a 7' rod for most spinnerbaits, but generally this is spot on. I use a 7' MH MF Aetos and love it. It's on the faster side of MF, but even with braid provides just enough flex.

I have a 7'6" cut down to 7"3" M Fast Action I use for spinnerbaits/chatter/buzz up to 1/2 oz, its great in open water around laydowns and standing timber, ticking tops of vegetation and sparse vegetation. As papajoe said on length versus accuracy it is a tradeoff, but by cutting a 7'6" down gives me best of both worlds. I have same rod in MH on order for same baits but to use in heavier vegetation cover, and for heavier lures.

I pair with 7.2:1 reel and 65# Bushido braid.

If your looking for a single rod to cover most situations and be very versatile I'd probably step up to MH unless you don't have a lot of vegetation, but I would try to stay at minimum 7' just to get distance, with spinner you want to cover water and extra distance will help.

I will throw a 3/8oz or 1/2oz spinnerbait on my Daiwa Tatula 7'2" MH/R glass cranking rod. When I move up to larger spinnerbaits, I will throw them on my Tatula 6'10" MH/F rod for the extra hooksetting power through extra weight and depth. I can also throw smaller spinnerbaits on a MH/F rod as well, it's just a matter of what else I plan to have rigged up.

I use a 7 mhmf mojo it was ok for my first spinnerbait rod but I think I’ll go mhf next time around.

i'll be using 1/2 to 3/4 oz spinner bait. i'll be using a #30lb braided line and want to throw further and want the reel/rod to be light so I can keep throwing and wont be tired after a few cast.

I prefer a 7'0" rod for 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. I can cast farther, and cover more water.

I'd go MH, F with min 7', I like 7'3 for reasons you stated. The lighter the rod the more expensive, generally speaking, lots of choices in everyones budget.

I use a Dobyn's 703, which is a 7' (true medium rod) and I'd much rather prefer the 734, a 7'3 (true MH), got a little more power and a little bit more length. The medium is good for 3/8 at the most, and the 7' is good for shorter and more accurate casts.

alright so right now people prefer 7'3 and MH for the spinner setup, will I be able to get a light setup with a 600-800 budget for rod/reel?

On smaller waters a 6'6" medium action fast will suffice...there are great retailers with good to excellent rods at reasonable prices to be had starting with this site...you can't go wrong being light on ponds and small lakes...

Do you bank fish rivers? If so you might want to get a 6’6 or 6’9 mhf it will be easier for you not to get hung up on trees and junk I fish rivers and I like a 6’10 max 6’8 preferably because it’s easier to make precise cast without hitting any trees behind you or above you.

Yeah well consider that because 7 foot is going to be to long you need to be focusing more on a shorter spinnerbait rod. What is your budget anyway for the rod?

mybe i can go $300-$350 on rod and $250 on reel so mybe around the $600-$700 range

With that budget you can get almost anything you like and be very happy.

ya with that budget theres a lot of rod to pick. i cant really find the rod weight on the well known brand except st.croix so i don't know which rod is lighter than others.

600 -700 you are in the enthusiast range for rod and real if you look around for pricing. Any 7 foot to 7’3” rod will work for a spinner bait rod. You can locate a pretty nice reel for a $120 like a diawa tatula sv or a Shimano k. As far as rods many brands for moving baits in your price range will work nicely

I've fished a lot of rods with Spinnerbaits as I live fishing them. The cabelas tournament zx spinnerbait rod is my favorite to date. Plenty of backbone but some tip in the last foot of the rod. For the money and lifetime warranty I think these rods are the real deal.

right when I was looking to upgrade my spinnerbait rod, today went fishing and it snapped by a big bass and got away. this was when I first got it to start bass fishing brought it from Walmart like 3-5yrs ago. =(. im trying to look for a light rod with a light reel. my friend told me to get the sheez and the tatula lt, if you guys got any lighter option and is around that price point just list them. after the spinnerbait rod broke I used my dipping rod on a spinnerbait man it was tiring. the rod is st.croix bass x with abu garica revo sx

I like a crankbait style rod for spinnerbaits. MH for most applications, but a medium for 1/4 ounce spinnerbaits (yes they have a very important role in some situations). I have two BPS Crankin Sticks in 7' M and 7' MH, and also a Abu Veritas Winch in that size. Any mid level crank rod is great for spinnerbaits.
