Dobyns Fury / Rod power question 2025

So gonna get my 2nd rod. I have a star rods mf 7ft.
I'm looking at the dobyns casting rods 704c or 703c, heavy fast and medium heavy fast respectively.
I have 2 or 3 questions.
Why is the 704 and 703 shown to have the same lure weight? Shouldnt the heavy have a higher lure weight?
My medium star rods stellar light is a 1/4-3/4oz lure weight. Same as the 704 and 703 from dobyns.
Does this mean they all are used for the same application?
I want to get a 2nd rod and wont be getting a 3rd for a long time. I'm leaning towards the mh just so I can throw heavier lures. Since I'll only have 2 rods I'm gonna use it for generally heavier lures like spooks, chatters, cranks, spinners, and maybe some punching and occasional frogging. My medium will remain for plastics.
I understand you really want different actions for most of this but I cant afford a lot of rods and I fish from a kayak on NY where i have tons of vegitation.
Does this sound like the right move or would you get something completely different?

I believe the 703 is rated 1/4-3/4 and 704 at 1/4-1. 703 is more of a medium and 704 more like a MH

This is correct. You will be better off with the 704.

I just picked up both. Caught about 20 on them. Get the 704. Both are nice inexpensive sticks . As mentioned above, they are a Med and MH power, what the label says not withstanding. It's a versatile stick, but I wouldn't want to use it for frogs and spooks though, not enough a$$ for the former and too long a handle for the latter. Get it though, for under $100, it will handle most bass lures, and do it well, the Incredible Hulk graphics aside.
ps: If I was rating the rods, I'd say 3/16-1/2 for the 703 and 1/4-3/4 for the 704.

ps: If I was rating the rods, I'd say 3/16-1/2 for the 703 and 1/4-3/4 for the 704.
I just realized I read the specs wrong, the 704c is 1/4-1oz. But since you are saying its more like 1/4-3/4 and I have a rod with that weight already should I go for the 735c? its a 7'3" 1/4-1.5oz.
I dont want to virtually get the same rod lol.

Assume you are talking about the fury lineup. I have a 734 and 735. The 734 is one of the more versatile rods I own. I throw chatter baits, spinnerbaits, and light cover popping frogs. I would get the 704 or 734 based on what you're looking to do.
I use the 735 for frogging almost exclusively.

Awesome, thanks. Ill probably stick with the 704 then since they have the same lure weight ratings but the 704 is smaller. I dont think I really need the extra 3 inches yet and it will be easier to travel with and use on the kayak

New question, for a rod like this would I want a 7:3:1 or 8:1 retrieve for my reel? Or faster?
Ill be using mostly cranks, chatters, spooks and maybe occasionally ill use it to flip/pitch in heavy weeds.
The lakes I fish in have a lot of vegetation so thats why Im considering a higher ratio. To keep it out of any weeds and structure. But im afraid it will rip the treble hooks out every time

Just spoke to someone in customer service. He recommended the 734c instead of the 704c. It will be a little more of a multi purpose rod because the extra 3" wont load up as fast as the 7' 704c. But i can still throw frogs, flip/pitch in a pinch if I wanted.
That sounds ideally what I need since Im gonna be putting lures with trebles on it mostly.
This sound right to you guys?

I didn't see it mentioned, do you fish from a boat or the bank? I have the 735 and for me the extra 3" makes it more of a challenge to walk certain non-frog baits vs using my 7" rod. I've used a 6' 6" rod as well but I felt like I was ripping the hooks out because it wouldn't load up properly. I would lean more towards the 704, but you want to crank with this rod too? Maybe consider the 705CB, was that ever mentioned when you called CS @ Dobyns?

I fish from a kayak.
He did not mention the 705. I think its probably because thats more specifically for cranks whereas i need something that can work ok for everything right now.
I was worried it may mess with walking baits, I use a spook right now for top water. hopefully It will walk ok because I really want to keep my medium rigged with a plastic to go after a miss.

Gotcha, shorter the rod the better. I've tried to jig with my 735 from the kayak and it was definitely too much length to land a fish.
I thought I saw top water as a secondary technique on their site. My bad. I would definitely go with the 704/734. I wanted the 734 originally, but the one shop that carries Dobyns rods in my area had a 735c or 703c. If I did it all over again, my ideal set up would be: 702sf, 704/734c and 705cb.

I'd get the Dibyns Sierra 704 on tackle warehouse right now, they are on sale for the same price as the fury and are much better. The sale ends in 3 days so I'd hurry if I were you.

DAMNIT!!! I already ordered the Fury 734. I wish I saw the Sierra, I would have ordered that instead!
I got the fury for $79.99 though. Not a bad deal from 110.
Im hoping I can deal with the extra 3". I liked the fact that it wont load as fast as the 704. Maybe the difference is negligible but its going to be my last rod for a while and want to cover as many styles as I can. Hopefully it will be a little more gentle on treble hooks.

It's all good. You got an awesome rod that will do a ton of applications. Where did you find it for $79? I saw today that the Dobyns site increased the prices to $120 and the SB models to $130
Ninja edit: Do you plan on using braid? If not a mono or fluoro might be more forgiving for treble hook baits

Not gonna go through that hassle, I'm more than happy with the fury. Plus I as able to get a charger for my fish finder battery and a chatterbait for the cost of shipping. My girlfriend ordered it for my birthday.
Unless you think it's a significantly better rod...

I was planning on going straight braid but was questioning if I should go up to 20lb or 30lb. Or neither and go floro? What's your opinion
