the pic im posting was from early this year during cobia season on the Pensacola beach fishing pier one of the regulars caught what we think is a peacock bass this was in the gulf of mexico in North west Florida

At only a glance, I'd bet $100 that is a Peacock bass X Speckled Trout (not really a trout, but a saltwater species which is in the Croaker family, and related to a Red Fish, and plentiful in the Gulf) !
Really amazing catch !

Totally cool catch.
However my piscatorial expertise leads me to conclude that is most definitely a peacock bass X speckled Trout Tilapia. This rare but colorful fish is a challenging game fish except during the cold months when the third fin suffers shrinkage.

This is the explanation I got when I found out a local store used some clips from our videos in a compilation that plays in the store. Don't get me wrong, they said if I objected, they would not play it. I said the only part I objected about was them not asking me first. To make good, they (He) made a donation for CAST for kids and I got a free jacket

I think it's just a regular peacock bass that has a different coloration from living near or in salt water.
I seriously doubt it that a saltwater fish can produce offspring with a freshwater fish.
Is there a river near the pier that fish was caught off?

from what i have read most peacock bass are in south Florida and dont like cold this fish was caught in the gulf in april in North West Florida close to the Alabama line we think he followed he pompano up on there migration the nearest rivers are up in the bays which contain lots of largemouth and stripers but also hybrids

I dont know but I dont think his parents were the same species. lol Does kind of look like a peacock with brownie sides.

It's a butterfly peacock bass, and the thing holding it up is called **** sapien pranksalotus. Pretty funny idea! Maybe I'll try bringing a bluegill to the beach next year and tell the local tackle shop I caught it in the surf! ;D

I have to agree with T-rig. I can't imagine a mostly freshwater fish, hybridizing with a saltwater one.
Probably an oddly colored Peacock, which has been carried to the ocean side. But if it were a prank, it wasn't a bad one. Had me going for a bit :-)

To me it screams phoney.
Look at lower 1/3rd.
There is a perfectly straight line accross the length of the fish where the spots stop abruptly and the orange-ish color begins.
It even appears to be in different focus. The one vertical bar was painted in, but he couldn't be bothered with the rest.
It's a very fun picture to be sure, but I never accepted it as a real fish.

Yup, the top of the body of the fish has been replace by another at the point where the dark amber turns to green.
