Lake Conroe Fishing 2024

fishing user avatarbass-ackwards reply :

I'd enjoy exchanging ideas on where, what and when to fish on Lake Conroe.  I live off April Sound and boat all over the lake all year to Bass fish.  Largest fish since moving here 2 years ago was 10lb 2oz.  I've caught 20 fish over 5lbs. so it is a good larger Bass lake.

The rip-rap tends to be good after a couple of sunny days this time of year.  I really haven't done any extensive chart work but did find several brush piles that produce decent catches in the winter.

I have three hot spots which always produce in the summer to fall.  Anyone interested in making this a thread for sharing spots lets get going!

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I fish it a lot. Willing to help anyone that needs it.

Jigs are producing the best right now for me. Long points, docks off the sides of these points with the deeper water, riprap, and brushpiles will always produce on this lake.

I would certainly like to hook up with one or both of you someday. My camp is at T Bend so 99% of my time fishing is spent there. However, Conroe isn't much more than an hour North of me and would be handy for a day trip when time doesn't allow me to get up to T Bend. I have been on Conroe 1 time and that was over 20 yrs ago, so I'd really just like to learn to run the lake to start with. The only other thing that has kept me from venturing up that way is HWY 45. I HATE draggin the boat through Houston. Used to ride dirt bikes and 4 wheelers in New Waverly years ago and  there was a "break" between Houston and Conroe. What used to seem like "out in the Country" is no more. Seems like city all the way to Conroe now. :'(

What riprap do yall usually fish?

I caught a 6 off the rocks at the lighthouse last summer.

Riprap is in any direction you want to run from the lighthouse. You have it up lake around bridges, roads,. Down lake at the dam, across the lake toward Caney creek, the 1097 bridge, it's everywhere.

I catch fish on warmer days off the lighthouse and lower (southern dam)  As the water warms into spring I find more and more on Diamondhead point rip-rap and the two smaller ones within davis creek.

Jack,

I've seen a lot of brush on the Humminbird 997c SI in great detail but have not found any which produce on a regular basis, if at all. Any general area which you find brush piles worth hitting in the winter months?

Gotta love this cold weather. Shut down all but the hungriest fish up in april sound area. Those few days 2 weeks ago saw 5-10 fish catches within 2 hours. Only one fish since. :-/

Best to you - Randy

I launch out of april sound and fish all the same areas as well. I'm usually on the lake everyweekend unless its snowing. ;) Most of the fish i've been catching lately have been coming from water between 10ft and 20ft or around docks with water thats at least 8ft or deeper around them. :)

If the docks are close to a point or down the side of a point they are even better. the 8' water is a key around the docks.

I love fishing Conroe this time of year.  Conroe is one of the most underated lakes in the state of TX.  In fact, it is only behind 2 other lakes in total number of "recorded" sharelunkers, and one of those lakes is Fork!  It is not uncommon for it to take over 30 lb limmit to win tournys at Conroe this time of year, the last spring tourny I fished there took 36 lbs!

I will give you 2 tips on fishing Conroe during this time of year that have made me very successfull every time I go!  These tips will all but garuntee you a decent limmit, then you can go "hawg" hunting!

First, try finding some isolated patches of hydrilla.  They are hard to find out there because the homeowners kill it all off pretty good, but a few areas always exist.  If you can find such an area then hold on to your rod!!  In fact, if you are fishing a tourny and take a pre-fishing day, I would spend all the time that it takes to find at least one good sized area.   Ill give you a hint, there is one such area in the middle of a certain creek arm of the lake, across from a gas station boat ramp.  If the water is up enough, and the grass is alive then get ready for some great action.  The birds always flock to this area cause it holds so much bait.  You can crush both males and big females in this area during Jan. to April on traps and spinnerbaits!

2nd, I like fishing the little windy creeks on the mid-east shoreline of the lake.  I start by fishing the entrances to these areas and try to fish the creek channels and ditchs as they run out into deeper water. Target these areas with a lipless crankbait!  As the lake warms into the 60's, begin to move into these areas and fish for bed fish with weightless senkos, I like to rig them wacky style!  Some of these little creeks of stairways, latters, decks, and boat slips that make great structure for bass.  Some of the creeks dont have any man made structure/cover, look for laydowns, over hangs, and submerged plants on these.  Both types will carry a few beds but make sure and explore them early.  These areas can get some pressure, so dont be afraid to take a chance even though you think the water might still be a little too cold.  The big ones spawn first anyways!

Good Luck!

fishing user avatarblanked reply :

what are your plans about conroe during summer this year and for future with no grass.  do you still plan on putting as much time on the water as before or move on to other lakes?

fishing user avatarKbo reply :

I would just like to say that i am extremely appreciative of you guys sharing info on lake conroe. i have never seen a lake so secretive than this one. i live in houston and just about given up on this lake. i fish rayburn and fayette mostly, but i love gong up there for a quick trip. thank yall again for the tips.

It's that way because we are fishing against each other when it counts.

fishing user avatarKbo reply :

i understand that, but i can go to rayburn or toledo where i grew up and ask some people and get tips all day. i have gotten tips for choke and fayette and every lake i have fished, but you ask someone about conroe and they laugh at you. doesnt make sense in my opinion. i never ask for exact spots when talking to someone, but just some ideas.

fishing user avatarSkeetyCCTX reply :

You probably dont get tips on Conroe cause your talking to big city folk!  That just dont have that sense of country hospitality!

Plus, Conroe bass fisherman probably dont want one more guy on there lake than there already is! (l0l)

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

I may live in Houston, but I was raised on the lake area and hunted the land that Rayburn covers. I watched dozers push timber off into the Angelina river while they were clearing it. Just a little more off the wall talk and uneducated thoughts from someone that has no clue.

Now excuse me while I tow my boat to conroe. Fishing the rest of today and some tommorrow. Will give a report when I return tonight.

fishing user avatarSkeetyCCTX reply :

BTW,  i was just joking about the city people comment and them not wanting new people on Conroe.  I dont want anyone thinking I was being serious.  Just a joke!

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Conroe water 50-53*. caught 4 nonkeepers, and three keepers. Fishing up river pitching a junebug/red brushhog in three ft. up in the bushes. Caught 4 nonkeepers on a LC RC1.5 in crawfish. Water is offcolor to muddy. Could not buy a bite on a blade.

I hope you were kidding. If not, that would have toped my list of stupid statements that I have read since I have been here.

fishing user avatarSkeetyCCTX reply :

Well, I thought it was pretty obvious that I was just being silly, but these days I have learned to never assume that people have a sense of humor, or the smarts to understand even when someone is laying it on fairly thick!

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

After reading a few of your other posts there is nothing obvious with you.

fishing user avatarKbo reply :

Same here. Houston called for work. Every chance and I am back up at the lake.

Conroe is waking up. Three to five feet has a lot more fish than it had last week. Whatever you fish make sure you slow way down. Shakey head will produce, but draws a lot more strikes if you refrain from shaking it and just pick it up with the rod tip and allow it to move on a tight line back to the bottom.

If you are fishing a crank or rogue type lure, pause for as long as you can stand it and move it with the rod tip after you get it down. a suspending lure will definately outfish one that rises right now.

I was on the lake two days this week and the amount of fish in the shallows willing to bite showed a marked improvement from monday to thursday. Water temps are climbing to the mid 50s.

Good luck

Yep, and if you raise them right it is never a problem.

Except for mother's day, easter, and family situations that crop up regurarly...LOL.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Fished conroe today. Four overs(Lake has a 16" mininum), with the largest being 4.97. Fish was on a bed. Caught the male to. They both went right back. fish were caught on a jig and a brushhog. Caught several unders on a LC RC 1.5.

Still pretty slow. Found a creek that has 62* water and started catching fish. Going back tommorrow.

I was on the south end if anyone cares to know.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Headed out again. Fishing the north end/mid lake area today. Will report this afternoon when I return.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Great day, unfortunately the fish did not bite well for me. Had two overs and four unders. All caught on a Watermellon/red brushhog. 2-4' of water. water temps were 62-64* depending on where you looked.
